What's new

English Football 2009/2010 Season

Oh dear. :D

It's a shame that the football club down the smelly end of the M27 couldn't match Southampton's 27 years in the top flights.

Although they can happily claim the "first Premier League team to enter administration" and "lowest number of points in a season" records.

Now Pompey have to find an owner wanting to buy a club where top players will obviously jump ship, get a ground where they can't extend and all the all dodgy dealings that'll come out in the wash now they're in administration.

Oh well, Dave, Saints had it tough season before last and they've turned around. I'm sure somebody will love to buy Pompey so they inherrit "the best fans in the world" like John "Portsmouth Football Club" Westwood.

I don't give a **** about football but I am proud of my home city, so ha-ha-aha-ha. :D

Feel for all the fans, especially as this is due to dodgy dealings... Rather than incompetance (10 years ago) and a loan shark (current)...

Hopefully Dave we can have some banter surrounding Palace v Pompey next year...

^^ But the thing is Ian the fans don't actually know whats gone on, its really hard to understand.
We can only guess as to where all our money has gone. There better be a criminal investigation to this after this has blown over, as where did our £80m of sold players go!?

That did cross my mind actually when I saw Muntari come on for Inter the other day, he was about £14m wasn't he?

Oh well...

I never said you will go out of business, and I hope you don't.

But I hope this does serve as a warning that clubs have to be run as businesses. I also hope it means that I'm just left hoping Ridsdale is booted out of football for good, and then I'm happy.

Well I didn't see the official club statement earlier, but Storrie is to resign! Yay.

Is that before or after all the best players leave?

Or is it after they've found an owner to buy a football club with a league 1 ground complete with portaloos, no training ground and no acadamy?

Well he's leaving with immediate effect I think, because his executive role has been taken over by the administrators. He still picked up his salary though!

We have been trying to get training ground for years, but protests from old people always stop us where ever we try to build one. We do have an academy I have you know :p I believe Asmir Begovic came from it who was our most promising goalkeeper until he was easily sold off....

Pompey's academy is quite good. And Storrie's staying on until there's a new buyer. £1.2 million a year is criminal though, sums up why he needs to be gone.

This was both a good and bad thing with Pompy. They needed to either get a mega rich backer or be put as it is now. The finances of more clubs needs to be looked at or we could see big names going down the pan. Liverpool And Man U come to mind as both clubs are in a crap load of debt. Even the smaller clubs are on a shoe string and sometimes make a gamble that cripples them for the next season.

But who really knows what will happen with this situation.

Pompy being screwed over is not nice to see. It is never nice seeing and hearing about a premireship club going into receivership.

Well Kitsue, clubs like Liverpool and Man Utd can sustain their debt and pay it off, as they have large stadiums, big merch revenues and massive TV income (for championship league and the Premier League), yes they do have large wages, but they can sustain this.
Smaller clubs like Portsmouth couldn't, we needed a regular 25,000-27,000 crowds to be somewhat sustainable but our ground only holds 21,700. Plus all funds that were going to the stadium vanished (magically) and so were in this situation.

Quick question, why are they only getting deducted 9 points? I thought 10 was standard for administration?

And we may have lost today to Chelsea, but, I'm happy with how Wolves played, put up a good fight. Shoulda got a penalty in the second half though... booo ref!

Lol, would have never thought of you as a footie fan Ben!

Probably... less teams = less games to make up points deficit, so although its only a point difference makes sense they have less...

I see I'm wrong about the academy. Sorry about that. All the same, keep using that training ground in the SO postcode area!

Yes, Pierre is right, less teams means less penalty points.

Dave, I find it hard to believe that when Portsmouth are doing so ****, why are home games only half full? If the club needed the cash, why weren't "the greatest fans in the world" going to every game? Only just half-filling a cow-shed of a stadium is not going to bring in the cash.

Even when Saints were doing terribly (they still are terrible, but ok for their league), the best football stadium in Hampshire was still pulling in 18K (over half) for most matches.

Kitsune - Yes it is good to see a Premiership team go into administration. Not only could it possibly be a wake up call to the Premier League and the teams, but it shows up the teams who try to punch too high above their weight.

Never mind, Dave. Rupert Lowe could be a contender to buy Portsmouth. Have him as your chairman. You'll get a nice stadium out of it, if nothing else.

I wish I enjoyed the game of football more than the politics of it all.

Because most of us fans were out-priced from the game, the average ticket for a game is £38. Because of the high wages from the players we bought, this was the only way to be 'sustainable'. It hasn't changed still, they occasionally do half price days in the Apollo Stand, these prove popular but only happen when less 'important' teams play.

I'd rather half Al-Fahim back than that scumbag Rupert Lowe.

Thought that was Newcastle?

Either way, I'm not surprised the fans aren't turning up if they're not happy with the situation, even die-hard fans sometimes will turn their back on a club if they don't agree with what's going on at the club...

I watched a clip on the BBC interviewing that John Westwood fella, and even though he looks like a twat, he speaks with a love of the club and the core part of football...

Tbh, there's a lot wrong with football at the top, for example, a year when it looks like another team outside the big 4 may get 4th place (and the Chumpions League spot) and they talk about a play-off system... What a load of bollocks it is in order to keep the status quo...

Chester got chucked out the Conference today as well due to more dodgy dealings with the owners, but doubt many people would even know there was a team in Chester...
