Saw a couple of films yesterday. Started with Hanna

Was looking forward to this, something a bit different from British director Joe Wright. Soundtrack by Chemical Brothers too, ok, you have my attention. I thoroughly enjoyed the film, it had some awesome action scenes, the soundtrack is awesome (techno/dance artists should do more soundtracks what with Chemical Brothers doing this and Daft Punk doing Tron: Legacys which are both awesome). The acting was awesome all round and I was glad there were some characters in there for some comical moments. The final scene is epic and I want to know where that is as it would be awesome/creepy to walk around if it's a real place.

Cedar Rapids

I was looking forward to this but also expected to be dissapointed by it being another film where all the funny bits are in the trailer. I was pretty spot on with that, I think there were an additional 6 jokes that weren't in the trailer (I'm surprised how much they showed from the end of the film too). At times it was predictable and I feel like they just missed the mark, it should have been hilarious and it just wasn't. Sad times.

Anyone seen 13 Assassins yet. I am intrigued by it. They have flyers in My comic book store that they keep giving me (Not as bad as the Elephanmen flyer's though, I have millions of them and that also has a movie coming out for it too ^ω^)

Oh hai Kimahri, I also saw 13 Assassins

Had no idea what to expect, never saw a trailer etc. OMFG WTF was my initial reaction after the film. It starts off quite slowly, lots of reading (subtitles) and trying to figure out who was who and who did what for the first 20 minutes was bloody effort (especially when you have people who fail at life and come in during the film they can go DIE). However, it was totally worth it and once you understand who is who etc it all falls into place and you get some disturbing shots of a disfigured woman and then it really kicks off. They round up 12 samurai and begin their journey to assassinate someone who is protected by like 70 guards. After an amusing character drops in it picks up even more once they get to a certain village. This village is where one epic battle happens and has to be the best battle sequence ever. It's gruesome, action packed (but in a way where you understand wtf is going on) and contains random bulls of fire. Seriously if you can get to a screening of this film I highly recommend you see it.

Just saw Thor.

It was a great, here is the story of Thor, background info, type movie, but it didn't do anything amazing to me. In regards to setting up the Avengers, hell yes it's amazing, but it left me wanting more. The post filming 3D conversion was utter ****. It was too dark, blurry, and poorly done. If you do 3D, SHOOT IN 3D, because there is a difference. Michael Bay, as much as people hate him, has it right to shoot in 3D, because the conversion looks like ****, i.e. Clash of the Titans. But to end the rant, I will be seeing this movie again, but not in 3D.

7/10

Saved me some time, my thought exactly. The 3D was ****, there were points where I removed the 3D glasses and it looked perfectly in focus, and times when it didn't look 3D at all even with the glasses on.

I know this film came out quite a while ago, but I've only recently got round to watching it. I have to admit I think it's great. Sure, it's a little <img src='http://www.coasterforce.com/forums/images/smiles/icon_censored.gif' />, but I really just enjoyed it. Isn't that what it's all about? I'd give it a solid 8/10

Burke and Hare
Another film that isn't strictly brand new, but again I've only just got round to watching it. I liked it actually. It certainly wasn't Pegg's or Serkis' best, but they worked really well together and again, I just enjoyed. 7/10.

Tropic Thunder
An EVEN older film! I didn't really like this very much at all. It just lacked something. It was funny in places, and there were some great moments, but it just felt too... shallow. Enjoyable, but not great. 5/10.

Sorcerer's Apprentice

My dad had it on his TV so we decided to watch it when I was over. Uhh, it's not really my thing and the whole nerdy-ness thing was a bit over the top but other than that it was a cute movie and not too confusing like action/magic movies usually are. Was a bit predictable too, but it wasn't super long or anything and it kept me entertained so, it's decent.

Black Swan

So, all I have heard is just how amazing it is from everyone, and everyone who didn't say that said you just need to see it. So I did. Complete. ****. Complete. Just awful, call me ignorant or whatever, for not liking that "artistic" movie, but it was trash. It makes sense it was up for a bunch of awards because it was complete ****, and thats all that wins. The only good part was seeing Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis partially nude, but thats about it.

^Urgh, go drool over Fast and the Furious.

Today I saw two films at the cinema. First up was Attack the block.

I was really looking forward to this, thought it looked very funny. It wasn't as funny as I'd hoped for but it's a really good film, and I thought the special effects were really cool.

Rating: 3/5

I also saw Take me home tonight

Have been really looking forward to this since it was announced and then I saw the trailer last year and I got all excited. Worth the wait imo. I love 80s based things and it was just awesome, the soundtrack is wicked (gonna have to buy it now) and the cast are ace. I was worried it would be a film where most of the funny moments are in the trailer and I suppose it was a little bit but I thought there was still more amusing moments not seen in the trailer and it was just fun.

Fast Five

Pretty much just crap. Fast sexy cars, but Vin Diesel and The Rock comparing who has taken more HGH in their life. Pretty ridiculous. Granted the end set up a sixth one, and I know I will see that, but if you expect any other than **** acting in this, you're expecting the wrong thing. I loved the cars. And the women. But thats it.

Ok? I get what you are eluding to, but it doesn't deserve the praise it gets. Hell Natalie Portman was the best part of the movie, and that character has been done before. Secret Window, spoiler alert, but Johnny Depp does exactly what he is writing as his split, just like what happens with Portman in this movie. There was nothing that made this think this is an amazing movie, it should win every award blah blah blah. Mila Kunis' character was a joke, she was there for 5 minutes, then gone for an hour, then back, and then they hated each other for really no apparent reason, then best friends then hated. It felt like I was observing a high school clique. I know I am in the minority completely but didn't deserve to be called one of the years best movies.

Arthur

Well, I've never seen the original, so can't compare this version with that one, but I really thought this was great. Funny, sad, serious etc.

Russell Brand was the hairy and useless **** he always is, but Helen Mirren is just pure class, as per usual.

^ I've avoided watching Arthur as it looks dreadful, and Russell Brand = </3

Been a while since I posted in here, so here's a full list of films since my last post on the 20th April:

Watched Monty Python and the Holy Grail which was much funnier than Life of Brian. the jokes kept coming and coming, it had many memorable quotes and lines and the story was good even if it was broken down quite a lot. It was better than Life of Brian, and certainly a classic in my eyes!

9/10

Man on Wire. It was a really good documentary, really engaging and made what was a serious crime with potentially disastrous consequences something of beauty and elegance. I really enjoyed it, really engaged with it, and it would have been so easy to make reference to the Towers not existing any more, but thankfully they did not. That would have ruined it.

8/10

Watched Thirteen. I dunno what I was expecting from this, particularly as I know the director directed Twilight (which I weirdly need to see), however, it wasn't all that bad. The story was pure, direction was great and it had a real raw feel to it. It was by no means perfect, but I really engaged with it. I felt like it could have been much better than it was, but oh well.

7/10

Rubber I had been meaning to watch for a while. It's a cult film about a killer tyre. I thought it would be hilariously terrible, but it really wasn't. In fact, I was lost for words after watching. It is beautifully shot, had an unusual narrative and I think the film is actually nothing to do with the tyre at all, but is to do with spectatorship. The film is watched through the eyes of spectators from afar who at one point are poisoned and one of the spectators goes into the "set" to describe his boredom of a scene. Interesting ideas, including some quirky existentialist surrealism.

A real watch, but should have been a short film as opposed to a feature film.

7/10

Also watched The Naked Gun 2 1/2. It was nowhere near as good as the first in terms of quotable jokes, but jokes were still there, and nothing beats a good bit of slapstick and silly humour. The first is of course better, but still fun to watch :)

6.5/10

Watched Se7en, which I quite enjoyed. It's a film which shouldn't be as good as it is, but it pulls off what it aims to do very well. Eerie death scenes, good action, a flowing tale and a small twist of an ending made it highly enjoyable and I can now see it's high rating in action.

8.5/10

Watched Insidious which was the WORST film I have seen this year. It was terrible, far-fetched, tediously laughable and completely ridiculous. I cannot stress just how bad it was. I would HIGHLY recommend you don't go and see this film. It's not worth the time nor money. It just seemed to get worse and worse and worse as the film went on, and I'd ever say that Paranormal Activity was better than it...and the film was so bad that I'm going to rate both PAs higher - put them both up to 5's now.

2.5/10

I watched Hard Candy. It was Ellen Page's first film, and out of all of her performances I have seen her in, this is by FAR her best. It was really believable, engrossing and she did brilliantly to portray the psychotic 14-year-old girl. The film as a whole was quite good - there were scenes which were incredibly hard to watch as castration was involved, but it had good flow and the screenplay I felt worked throughout. A good, solid film.

7.5/10

Watched Attack the Block on Wednesday which if you just looked at the storyline would sound terrible, and thankfully, it wasn't. From the outside, it sounds like Kidulthood meets sci-fi, and in a way it was...sort of. It had a lot of 'smirk humour', a moderately flowing narrative and some great acting by the young cast. The problems I had with it are small in most people's eyes: I hoped the film would show the "youths"/chavs in a positive light, with opportunity for redemption against the typical stereotype attached to them of violence, thuggery and stupidity - this is seen well in Kid/Adulthood as it shows deeper meaning behind the youth and their actions, however, this really just went on stereotypes and made them look thuggish almost all the way through. I was disappointed :(

It was, however, much better than it should've been.

7/10

Watched Thor. I went in having heard positive things from many friends, but knowing just how much I don't enjoy comic book films on the whole. However, I was willing to give this a shot.

Well, I'm glad I did. The CGI in many scenes was perhaps a bit over the top, but certainly impressive. No wonder the budget was over $150,000,000. The mix of modern human life and alternate realm was quite good, and brought some humour to it. The story was boring at first, but got me quite gripped and I begun to enjoy it.

Yes, it was much better than I expected, but it's no film I feel you should see before you die.

7.5/10

Reservoir Dogs. It was brilliant. Violence, graphic, vile and the story is told in such a great way where it all comes together at the end. The dialogue is brilliant and so life-like that it feels unscripted, naturalistically shot scenes, excellent acting and overall brilliant film. Thank God for Tarantino!

Saw Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides earlier at the IMAX.

First up, the 3D doesn't really do anything for the film. Secondly no scenes are actually screened in the IMAX format. There we go, I just saved you lot a bunch of monies. The film however was great fun, it really felt like it had regained the energy that the first film had. It had cameos of joy, amazing set pieces and jaw-dropping special effects, what's not to love? It also gets extra love from me for spending a good 20 minutes in London <3

Rating: 4/5 :D

Thor

It was massively underwhelming after such a strong start. Some great performances by the cast, Hopkins just owns the screen, even when 'dead'. It's as if they gave up writing in some points and just tied up loose ends.

A film produced by Guillermo Del Toro starring The Orphanage's Belén Rueda as a woman stalked by an invisible man who makes her go blind? Why, yes. Actually, yes.

Out on Friday, kids!

GIVE DEPP A BLOODY OSCAR ALREADY!!!

Pirates isn't necessarily a good film on its own, merely a platform upon which Depp can express his genius. If he doesn't get the Oscar for THAT performance, then I'll be most surprised. Practically all the scenes were written for him to show off character acting the likes of which is rarely matched and never beaten! Superb. (McShane's Blackbeard should get a dishonourable swashbuckling mention too! :) )

Film - 7/10
Depp - 11/10

He won't get an oscar for his performance, it's a great performance I 100% agree but yeah they only give awards to blockbusters if the star died after making it. Such a shame.

If he wins an Oscar for Jack Sparrow I'll be sick...

It's a great character, but not oscar worthy. Why don't you say Thor should be up for Best Actor as well.

I've watched lots again.

Casino
Not seen this for years. A great look at the mob owned Vegas of the 70's/80's. Brilliant tale, well told. I prefer it to Goodfellas I think, but only because Robert De Niro is awesome. It's one of those films everyone should see. 10/10

The Men Who Stare at Goats
Hmmmmm... Bit of an oddball film this one. The best thing was Ewan McGregor constantly talking about being a Jedi, or learnnig to be a Jedi. Other than that, it was a mildly silly, rambling tale. A few moments it raised a smile and a couple of times a bit of a giggle. Generally though it just didn't engage. It never seemed to settle down. Some superb acting in it, just meh generally. 7/10

The Hangover
Much better than I thought it would be. I maybe watched it a little too close to Casino though and I was expecting a much different film  It wasn't side splittingly funny, but it was still good. All a little obvious, but it handled it well. Was worth overcoming "over-hype fear" for. 8/10

Sunshine
I wanted to see this at the cinema. Big Sci-Fi works best there, but it was still good at home. Gorgeous film, absolutely lovely to watch. Beyond that, it was just a remake of Alien with a dose of Silent Running and 2001 chucked in (I said the same about Moon  ). The difference here being that the film was actually really good. It wasn't brilliant, it lacked a little bit, but it was still great. Ended very badly and obviously unfortunately, but the journey was great. Well worth a watch if you like sci-fi/thrillers. 9/10

Battle Royale
I watched this when it first came out and really enjoyed it. I recorded it for Minor_Furie to watch, and it was still great a second time around. One of those "must watch" films. Brilliant. 9/10

There were more, but I can't remember them now  Obviously not worth talking about :)
