Parks with the best Steel/Wood coaster duo

Liseberg wins this hands down with Balder & Helix.

Honorary mentions to;

Heide Park (Krake & Collosos)
Holiday World (Thunderbird & Voyage)
SFGAm (Raging Bull & Goliath) Even Viper gets an honourable mention.
SFOG (Goliath & GeorGASM)
Kings Island (Beast & Diamondback)
Europa (Silver Star & Wodan)

And an extra special mention to PBB having Nick Streak & The Big One. Both are fab & Nostalgic coasters.

I'll give Holiday World a shout actually, Thunderbird is great, one of the best non-Hyper things B&M have ever done.

PortAventura would have been up there in 2005 but then they ruined Stampida.

Totally forgot about Happy Valley Shanghai actually - MegaLite and Fireball is a great combination, I'd probably put that second to Liseberg.

Blackpool with Grand National and PMBO :)

Seriously though I would agree and say Liseberg until Heide Park build a world class steel then it will be that.

Haven't been on either but El Toro and Kingda Ka must get a mention?

So much wrong with this post ;)

Firstly, Grand National is the worst wooden coaster on the planet.

Secondly, Nitro is universally acknowledged as the best coaster at SFGAdv, not Kinda Ka.

Thirdly, Heide Park have a world class coaster, it's called Krake.

Finally, El Toro is El BORO.

I'm glad you at least recognise how good PMBO and Liseberg are :D

^ It's obvious that Revolution and Wild Mouse are the top coasters in PBB. ;) But I agree with you on Grand National, it's just terrible, riding it was pure torture, eurgh. And so many people are praising it... </3

From the parks I've actually visited, the only one I can go with is SFMM. Apocalypse was decent and X2 is the best coaster I've so far ridden. But I haven't ridden any top class woodies to make a good contribution to the topic.

...I was just going to mention Krake and Colossos. Don't really need to elaborate on Colossos, it's amazing, we all know that. I really really loved Krake though, it's such a better build on from Oblivion in terms of an extended dive machine, love it.
Extended? Really? If you're talking about SheiKra or Griffon, then yeah. But Krake? Love the theme, but it doesn't offer much more than a small hill compared to Oblivion.

And it has an inversion? Sorry, that's just being nitpicky. Oblivion is literally the drop and no other major element, anything beyond that can be considered extended imo.

I'm going Magic Mountain and Dollywood. Both parks' GCI offerings are excellent and are supported by a pretty solid selection of steel.

Technically Sheikra and Krake do about as much. A lift, a drop, a splashdown, an immelman and a hill/second drop. Sheikra is just bigger and more drawn out.

Yeah, I don't know what I was thinking. I forgot about the inversion, so Krake is definitely extended and Heide should definitely be considered a contender.

Calling Apocalypse excellent is seriously stretching it. It's a solid and nice coaster, but nothing more than that. Or perhaps I don't have a real taste in woodies yet...

Perhaps it's because nobody really talks about it, but I guarantee if that coaster lived in Europe it would be beloved by enthusiasts the same way Troy is. And its better than Troy, so yh.

Troy is a tiny bit overrated by Europeans to be honest, despite being fab. But if Toverland get their mega coaster they want to have, they could be up there too.

As Darren noted, Kings Island with Beast and Diamondback, easily. I'd also agree with the Voyage/Thunderbird statement that's been brought up a time or two here. However, I also have to throw in my two cents for Kentucky Kingdom having both Thunder and Lightning Run. Neither coaster is exactly world-class, true, but both are pretty good, solid rides and I enjoyed both.

Apocalypse is like a shorter, snappier Troy. Troy is better (IMO) because it holds the relentless pace and intensity for longer, but Apocalypse is a much better woodie than it gets credit for. In fact, I think this is the first time I've seen it discussed on here.

Going back to the topic, a park that hasn't been mentioned, perhaps because of it's fairly elusive location is Silverwood. I haven't been, but I would have thought one of the two CCI's and Aftershock would be a solid combination.

I was going to mention Silverwood, but I haven't ridden Tremors since it was re-tracked. That was done by RMC and it's their home park, so I imagine it runs great now and Aftershock is by far the best GIB I've ridden.

I agree with Magic Mountain as well actually, Apocalypse is fab and really forgotten about.

It's a great coaster, one of my favourite GCIs.

Then they have X2 <3

Considering my impressive resume of two major parks, I'd say SDC with Outlaw Run and Wildfire.

Raging Bull in the back row is a damn good ride though. Great 1-2 punch with Goliath.

I'm going with Magic Mountain because of Apocalypse (Terminator Salvation, as it was then) and X2 (and/or Tatsu), and SFGAdv... but not because of El Toro and Nitro, because of El Toro and the Mighty Kingda Ka.
Nitro sucked.

That's it. Those are the only 2 decent woodies I've been on.

Well; Troy is super-mega-awesome, so if Apocalypse is any better I really can't wait for September to ride it!! :--D

Like I wrote above I really adore Troy, such a well paced coaster, full of surprices, relentless and really long too! <3 Unfortunately Toverland lacks a good steel coaster..

So to my own suggestions:

Hersheypark - Skyrush, aka the best coaster on the planet, and the fun dueling Lightning Racers are a great combo :--D

Heide Park - Colossos has one of the best first halves of any coaster, and Krake is a great themed dive machine (with an amazing airtime hill <3)

I assume Six Flags GAdv would be #1 if it weren't for El Toro being closed when we went.. And regarding Liseberg: Helix is amazing, but Balder is such a boring coaster that I wouldn't even consider the park for the best wood/steel combo.

I guess I'm just not a big fan of the first half. First drop is great, but then all it does is long drawn out rattly turns and helices and a big hill that lacks airtime, with only like two pops of great airtime. After the station flythrough it gets significantly better paced with many twists and drops, but that's too late for me to make it my fave woodie. It's also not very re-ridable anymore due to the rattle it has nowadays. Still a great coaster as a whole. I think Dwervelwind is definitely a good coaster, but indeed not good enough to consider Toverland as an option.

Also, which woodie do you choose for SFNE then?

^Ahh, my bad! I don't know what I was thinking of ^^ I was referring to Goliath and Bizarro, which of course makes a steel coaster duo..

It's also a shame to hear that Troy has gotten rougher :( It was a smoth ride a couple of years ago when I rode it the last time!
