What's new

"Now Showing"

Iron Man 2 should be pretty epic. I feel that the trailer may be giving too much away though.

Anyways, I've had some time off work recently so yesterday I spent my day at the cinema. First film was From Paris with Love.

It's the same director as Taken (which is amazing) and has John Travolta and Jonathan Rhys Meyers in the lead roles. I thought the film was absolutely awesome, the story was simple but cool, the characters were cool, Travolta was awesome even if most of his dialogue was cheesy and referencing Pulp fiction. The action scenes were intense and jam packed with gun shots, running and explosions. Just a great fun film that doesn't take itself too seriously (and why should it?).

Rating: 4/5

Next up was Percy Jackson & the Lightning Thief.

I've already seen it but now I've read the book (well, I'm now on the third installment) I wanted to see how differently I would react to the film. I found loads of things were so different and sometimes more confusing. I know why they changed things though, just to suit American audiences and so it doesn't go on for 4 hours. I still feel it's a great film and that they did a good job adapting it for the big screen.

Rating: 4/5

Final film I watched was Green Zone.

This is the new Iraq war action thriller. It's basically another Bourne film, just not as good. Maybe I just have something against war films at the moment? Anyway it was very watchable but also very forgettable and doesn't really leave you with much of a lasting impression. So if you want to just waste a couple of hours to watch a not-so-good Bourne film then I recommend :p

Rating: 3/5

Iron Man 2 has got another trailer out now as well... Should be awesome...

I know they were always going to make a sequel, but there's no way it'll ever be as good as the first one was.

Sadface.

No Jeff Bridges with an epic beard :(

Cameron is going to re-release Avatar later this year as e wants to put about 40 minutes of extra footage in it. I think it's stupid and pointless but they reckon they can get more money out of it.
He also wants to re-release Titanic in 3D in 2012, to mark the 100th anniversary of the ship's voyage.

Today I went to see Alice's Adventures in Wonderland 2 - Revenge of the Scottish Accent...

Well... It was typical Burton fare, awesome visuals all around, and I had fun spotting the obvious "This part is for 3-D" sequences mixed in with the normal stuff, but I digress...

I thought that generally the actors did excellent, particularly the voice actors, Alan Rickman was amusing as the Caterpillar, Stephen Fry was brilliant as the Chesire Cat, and even though he only got about 3 lines of dialogue, Christopher Lee was an excellent choice for the Jabberwocky...

Helena yelled her way through her parts, which suited the insanity of the Red Queen, whilst Anne Hathaway pranced and minced around her castle...

Depp... Was... Mixed... The random bouts into scottish accent was a rather surreal experience (to be expected by Burton) but possibly was just... Too silly and surreal (although that award went to the dance at the end, fortunately knowing that it would only be slightly amusing for less than a minute, if it had been in Family Guy, it'd probs still be going on now...)

Visuals as I said were awesome, the multiple perspectives and heights of Alice were very well done in my opinion, and Mia got better as the film went on, much like the character of Alice herself...

The story... Was more Narnia/Lord of the Rings than anything really, especially with the big 'epic' battle at the end... And the actual ending of the film was rather lacklustre, as was the beginning tbh, but it was needed to set the scene more than anything, so I won't mark it down for that...

Either way, it was a fun enough film, and I could watch Stephen Fry as the Chesire Cat all day... But on the other hand, it had a rather generic plot that could easily be subsituted with any character these days...

3.5/5, would watch it again, but not the most breakout genre film Burton has ever made...

Can't they re-release it with 40 minutes LESS footage instead? And perhaps then it wouldn't be tedious and overly long...

^Then don't expect to see any more films soon then. As 3D technology evolves and becomes available to many more people you'll see it become the norm thing. Won't be long before almost every film will be in 3D. It's popular though and the GP love it as cinema goer numbers have rocketed up recently with the release of more 3D films.
I don't mind it. As long as the tickets don't to expensive I enjoy having that extra dimension. At first it was just a gimmick but now it's used to involve audiences more in the film which is a big step.
I know 3D has been around for many years but now it's really popular again and people will want to pay that little bit more to see a film in 3D.

By the way has anyone else seen that new Doctor Who Trailer in 3D? It's AMAZING to say the least. :)

^Yeah, that Doctor Who trailer was epic in 3D. Shame the special effects can't be that good in the actual program.

Oh and 3D TV has landed. We already have two at work (although, to be fair it's so people can edit programs and then see what it looks like in 3D :p)

Yep and later this year expect to see 3D TV's begin to be sold as well.
I love the quality of my local cinema. Sony 4K HD amazing surround sound and 3D. :)
Plus it's less than £5 to see a film if it's before 6pm and half that price if it's Wednesday.

<img> 3D! They use to be so rare, and a fun treat when they came out, now they're doing it for EVERY movie! I, for one, refuse to see anything 3D from this point on.

Sad thing is soon enough almost every movie will be in 3-D regardless.

Just back from seeing Shutter Island feeling very annoyed. It was very good, I predicted the ending literally 35 mins into it. Aaargh! A 2 hour 10ish min film, and it's solved so quickly in.

It was very well made, and the story was good, but I had already sussed out the most part so early on. Very well directed, look out for the plaster ;)

I know the ending is ambiguous, but still...

Look out for the lighthouse as well. The one at the beginning appears not to be one seen throughout the film...There were lots of minor errors I picked up on :p

A dissappinting 8/10

EDIT: The mote I think about the ambiguity of the ending, the less disapointed I am. I'm really thinking about it now...Is it really as open as it seems?

^ According to most, if you have read the book, it's pretty clear cut, but for those of us, like ourselves, which have just seem the movie, the ambiguity remains. The ending was sort of predictable I guess, but I still quite liked the movie itself.

Love the 99p films on iTunes. :)
Today I watched...

Corpse Bride:
Really nice film. Looks great and the animation is smooth and flawless.
I love the imagination that's gone into this. The characters are vivid and crazy and some of the scenes and transitions are well thought out.
The story is also super easy to follow and it's just generally great fun to watch.
The songs aren't too amazing but they fit in and there aren't so many that it plagues the film with them. The musical score for the film however is very good and sets the mood and atmosphere very well.
Overall a very good film and good fun to watch if you get the chance to see it. :)
8/10

This looks so friggin' cool! :D

Last Call is the first interactive horror movie in the world where the audience is able to communicate with the protagonist. A film controlled by a member of the audience, thus blurring the boundaries between game and film. Language recognition software transforms the participant's answers via mobile phone into specific instructions. A specially developed software then processes these commands and launches an appropriate follow-up scene. The dialogue between the movie's main actress and an audience member leads to a different film - and outcome - every time: sometimes with a happy end, sometimes with a more gruesome one. To participate in the adventure, audience members submit their mobile phone numbers to a speed dial code when they buy their ticket. The moment the female protagonist takes out her phone to call someone who might be able to help her, the film's controlling software contacts one of the submitted mobile phone numbers. Once the viewer picks up, he hears the actress's voice - who tells him she would be lost without him. He has to help her escape by choosing a path through the old, rundown sanatorium. Furthermore, he also decides whether she should help other victims to flee the scene -and every single choice shapes her fate: it's a matter of life and death.

^Because technology develops and times move on.
In the future when we're all buzzing around in hover-cars will you be like "Ugh, kill me now... Why can't cars just drive on the ground?"
It's not going to happen in every movie. That was just an experimental film to see if the idea worked. Which it seemed it did. :)

And talking about 3D I did a long post on the last page so I'm not going to repeat myself.
