^Hmm, Jesse James is a strange one, I loved it. The tension build was fantastic and I think it added lots to the film.


Yesterday I watched In Bruges again.

Love it, it slowly builds up into a fantastic film and everything about it just loves. "In the alcoves" :D

In the evening we sat down and watched Aladdin.

Zack and Miri Make a Porno

I actually thought this looked cute and funny, but I never expected much from it because I didn't hear great things. Although it was TOTALLY obvious what was going to happen, the concept of the movie was funny and there were many laugh out loud moments.

Amen. It's even worse than Lady in the Water, Shyamalamalamalan's previous film, and that was unforgivably dire. The sheer stupidity of The Happening cannot be overstated.

Okay, so I've seen:-

Mamma Mia!
All I can say is, thank **** I didn't see it in a cinema. There's only so much punishment a man can take.

2/10, for the outdoor photography, and ebullience of Meryl Streep and Julie Walters.


The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
I got to the end, over 2.5 quite long hours later, and thought, "Is that it?"

There's some great craftmanship on show. Pitt's pretty good, Blanchett excellent, and the supporting cast really strong.

The production is top quality, and the visual effects are ground-breaking - for the first hour there IS no Brad Pitt, only CG. And the de-ageing later on is remarkable.

But for all that, it's curiously uninvolving. Button is an introverted character who's hard to engage with, and the script lingers WAY too long over minor points in his life, leading to a borderline boring film. Which considering the subject is a waste.

It also harbors too many parallels with Forrest Gump (from the same writer). It muddies the core of the film and just reminds you how dull Button is.

Fincher seems to have been going after an analysis of the Mark Twain quote that inspired the original short story: "Life would be infinitely happier if we could only be born at the age of eighty and gradually approach eighteen." His conclusion appears to be that life is mainly dull and miserable regardless of which direction you go in!

6/10, for the craftmanship.

Why is no cinema in Wales showing Milk? I WANT TO SEE MILK DAMMIT!

I didn't get to see the 3D version, but there were a few moments where I thought, "that would look cool in 3D!".

As for the film itself, well it's what you'd expect from Disney...

"One or more lovable protagonists have existed for some time in a stable but fundamentally flawed routine, which is shaken up by the introduction of a foreign entity, usually another character, around whom attitudes are initially hostile. Attempts to deal with this character eventually lead to the protagonist(s) discovering a new, unfamiliar world, and in doing so discover the nature of the fundamental flaw in their routine. Villains are usually introduced or only become truly villainous from around the mid-point or quite late into the film. Along the way the heroes enlist the help of various lesser characters with clearly definable quirks and at one point reluctantly enter a high-speed chase. The villain is generally finally defeated with surprising ease, and everything concludes in an emotionally manipulative ending in which routine is restored with the fundamental flaw excised."

Think how many Disney/Pixar films that could describe. :p

Nevertheless, I enjoyed it, and if you like Lasseter's work, you'll probably like this too.

"Zack and Mira make a porno"

Typical Kevn Smith - very talky. Lots of smiles raised when he WASNT trying to be shocking and just concentrating on "realistic" dialog. I enjoyed it.

As a B movie bruce cambell fan - I REALLY wanted to like this one.. and at the start i was laughing a lot... But ultimately it fell dry thanks to a dull script.

One REAL laugh out loud funny bit i found in the film was when he was running away from the monster firing randomly behind himself killing the townsfolk.. Guess that appealed to my imature side.

Well, they're both kind of different in a way since Button has the whole aging backwards issue that Forrest doesn't, but overall yeah I've never seen Forrest though they do look very similar.
