Music Recommendations

Venturing to say this - ambient music anyone? How about Hecq, Stars of the Lid, or Tim Hecker?

I adore ambient music. It's probably some of the most peaceful, relaxing music one can ever hear - soothing sounds for the soul. Especially Stars of the Lid, their music is pretty sublime - and be informed it's also quite tranquil in quality so it's not uncommon for people to say this "could make them fall asleep." That's why they refer to themselves as Stars of the Lid (the back of the eyelid, haha). Also, their music may sound really mellow, however it's not as tame as it may first seem as they incorporate some pretty vigorous bass throughout their music as well. Tim Hecker and Hecq occasionally do this too but I especially like Stars of the Lid's bass. Listen to their song I recommended below through a good bass system and you'll see what I mean! Otherwise, just enjoy their nice, dreamy drones.

So here's some suggested songs of each artist. Hecq has an alternate style of IDM, glitch, and perhaps dubstep - not just ambient, so there's an example of his alternate style as well if you'd like. The links take you directly to the songs on Grooveshark and should automatically start playing.

Hecq - "0011"
Hecq's alternate sound - "Sura"
Stars of the Lid - "Requiem for Dying Mothers, Part 2"
Tim Hecker - "Borderlands"

Really love sharing this stuff, I think they're all exceptional artists which wouldn't hurt with having more listeners.

Wow this song blows me away! If anyones into Dream Theater and progressive metal listen now, it's more like a journey than a song, it's brilliant! Would like to hear more of these actually, there's only a few tracks out :(

It's ok, although prog doesn't float my boat much anymore. Porcupine Tree however is ranked among my favorites these days, so if you're talking prog, I could currently go with this song:

Porcupine Tree - "Always Never"

NOTE: non-fans of ambient music may easily find the following suggestion boring. If ambient music tends to bore you, please feel free to not bother reading.

As far as recommending an entire album, I would DEFINITELY go with Hecq - Night Falls. Especially if you're an ambient music fan, there's a chance you could find the album to be at least somewhere near extraordinary. I know that may sound like an overvalued statement, but just listen to it and judge for yourself. I personally find it to be so great that I'd actually rank the album among a top 5 of all time.

To give you an idea of the impression I'm talking about, here's some of the numerous (positive) short reviews of the album as stated by members of Last.fm:

Whoa wasn't expecting this. Beautiful stuff.
Absolutely stunning album. Tears me apart everytime.
i don't know what to say... terrifying and haunting, yet beautiful at the same time.
I'm glad I started with this Dark Ambient album rather than the other ones. This is very atmospheric without being overbearing. Good stuff.
This album is an epiphany. One of the most sonically and emotionally rich pieces of music I've heard in a long time.
So there you go, there's some of the reactions (which even they don't exactly do it justice in describing it). Could you enjoy it as well?

You can stream the entire album >>>HERE<<< on Grooveshark. For the best listening experience, stream it through from beginning to end - it's a rather mysterious and transcendent journey, AND with a PHENOMENAL ending (just be patient and listen until you get there). If you end up not finding this album to be anywhere near reminiscent of any of these descriptions, well, sorry.

If you like your blues a bit on the rocky side, The Dead Weather have a new album out soon, two tracks released already.

I love the 60's/70's vibe they have, a little like The Doors, but with with some punk and blues/rock thrown in too, it's probably a little eclectic for most people, but I love it. Proper stoned evening music...

I know it must be good, Madame_Furie hates it ;)

That song sucks. The F*ck You version is good, the Forget You version is a pile of ****.

Pretty sure i'm about 2 years too late here. But oh well.

^Yeah, but that album's growing on me in a massive way at the moment. I liked it before, but i'm beginning to love it now. The Cave is fantastic too.
