^^The Sonata one probably works so well because Tony Kakko has the type of voice that can do Dickinson-type things. That, and Sonata Arctica are bloody awesome.

As for Scream Aim Fire, there are a few stand out tracks, but I can't relate to the songs as much as on Fever/The Poison. And with the EP, as Kerrang said when it was first released, it sounds virtually the same as Funeral for a Friend's old stuff - which isn't a bad thing of course! Fever is still the most powerful in my opinion.

These guys do some great remixes and have lots of 80's flare in their own stuff. Check em out.

I meant to post this one a while ago, but never got round to it. Its by John Frusciante, the most-of-the-time guitarist for the Chili Peppers, who i'd personally consider my favourite guitarist, although his solo work rarely encompasses the soulful emotional playing that he's been known for over the years. I've always loved his solo stuff though, its really back to basics and simple compared to the usual Chilis brashness. This track, 'Before the Beginning' is the first track from his most recent solo effort, 'The Empyrean', and for a change, it does come heavily laced with some beautiful guitar-playing. Its heavily influenced by 'Maggot Brain' by Funkadelic, which if you haven't heard is worth listening to as well. Basically though, its an 8-minute guitar solo set to a drum machine. When the playing is as good as it is, vocals aren't required, because the guitar's singing enough anyway. It really is stunning. Please listen!

If you knew me in person and knew me well, you'd know why I love this song and smile all the way through it. The only problem is that its a bit too fast for me to sing along.

Laurie Anderson's new album, Homeland is fantastic. I say new, but it was out last year and I only just found out last week. It's the first one in about 10 years, and feels a lot like some of her much older stuff; part spoken, part sung, interesting rhythms and instrumentation. The woman's a **** ing legend.

One of my favourite tracks of the new album:

And a bit of classic Laurie Anderson for ****s and giggles:

Totally agree Gavin. I should have posted it here last year so you wouldn't have had to wait so long to give it a listen.

Anyone heard the new REM - Collapse Into Now yet? Thinking about getting it, but not been impressed with their last few releases.

This is one for the power-metal fans out there... I've basically not shut up about this band since seeing them support Symphony X last night, partly because they're the best support I've met in a very long time, but mostly because this feels like the perfect accompaniment to a sunny day.

Imagine a lots better DragonForce, and you're most of the way to their earlier stuff... and then they've matured, and sound more like this.

Also, much to my surprise - they're from Southampton (except the singer, all he'd say is he was from 'Far Away') - I hadn't realised real metal was allowed to survive down there :)

That whole album's pretty damn good, and there's another one released on Monday. For specific tracks, I guess I'd go with Human Machine and Save the World.

Within Temptation's long-delayed newly album finally hit the stores today, and I'm getting the feeling it'll take a bit of getting used to. Sharon's vocals are arguably as strong as ever, but the feel is just a little bit too far on the 'poppy' side... Why would they do that?

I miss the Mother Earth era sound, I doubt they'll ever better Deceiver of Fools. These were the first symphonic band I properly got into, but I think I prefer Nightwish these days.

If that doesn't get the emotions running, nothing will. That performance was the first time i'd heard that song, and its still hands down the best, its just so powerful. The version that's knocking about by Birdy at the moment is also fantastic, and seeing as she's only 14, makes me feel like a massive underachiever, but nothing is going to top that.
