Yoy - Walibi Holand.
Grr... so frustrating, I really wanted to like this but sadly, it just doesn't deliver.
Let's talk about the good stuff first. Number 1 - it looks fab. The blue and green track combo really pops, it's filled up a big, vacant plot of land on the park and joined up a previously very laborious horseshoe-shaped park layout. Watching the two trains dance and duel with each other is truly a visual feast.
Number 2 - both rides have really good layouts, no complaints here at all. Despite being marketed as 'chill', the blue side is still pretty intense with some good moments of airtime and strong positive g's. The green 'thrill' side offers more of the same, possibly a bit more forceful and with the obvious addition of six inversions, but more or less a similar ride experience.
Number 3 - the duelling aspect is executed brilliantly, a marvellous bit of engineering right there. Whichever side you're on, a lot of the experience comes from trying to keep your eye on the other train as it twists and dives over, under and around you. The timings are just exquisite. Good stuff.
Now then, the bad stuff, the elephant in the room in fact: what the hell is with that rattle? Holy crap, it's like...
really bad. I'm no engineer, but it feels to me like there's somehow a fundamental design flaw in the trains. Essentially, each car is nothing more than a tiny little wheel bogie with piddley little shopping trolley wheels, a piece of metal plate welded over it and a chair bolted on top. It's so flimsy you can rock it from side to side as you climb aboard in the loading station. Not a nice, cushioned rocking that would absorb any forces either, it clunks, loudly, from side to side, moving a good inch either way, almost as if something wasn't bolted down properly. Naturally, this loose, rocking motion translates to a rough ride. I mean, how could it not?
Although some reviewers have claimed it's not that noticeable on-ride and doesn't detract too much from the experience, for me at least it was a dealbreaker.
Had one ride on each side and didn't feel the need or the urge to ride them again. 2 and done.
In other news,
Eat My Dust is a solid but unremarkable family cred,
Goliath is showing it's age in terms of layout design but still rides really well and
Untamed , my word... Untamed - still one of the top 5 coasters in Europe for me, I'll take it over Taron, Zadra, Wildfire, Kondaa etc.. Bloody love it, I do. My favourite of the 'medium' sized RMC's.
Here are some pictures from the day:
Mat getting his 500th cred on Goliath.
