Yes, I know they are from different manufacturers and all but they are both coasters with one purpose: to turn you upside down as much as possible. As everyone knows, Intamin's Colossus and its clones were the previous record holder until Gerstlauer churned out The Smiler with its 14 inversions. Neither are the smoothest coasters in the world and both get generally mixed to average reviews.

Before the Easter holidays I would have said Colossus but after a pretty vile rattly ride on it, with one train operations, Im going with The Smiler. I rode The Smiler in Easter too and I enjoy it for what it is, its a bit rattly but I didn't notice the awful restraint smell from the summer holidays (doesn't mean its not still there if you look for it).

Easy. The Smiler. I used to quite enjoy Colossus but during my last ride I realised it was total ****.

My last ride on The Smiler I actually really really enjoyed it, it was reasonably smooth and comfortable, the seats are nice too. Colossus is just one painful inversion after another, plus it is nauseating. Ugh.

I actually really enjoy the first half of Colossus. I especially like the little airtime hill before it heads under the shop.

However, the trains suck. They're tiny and cramped and uncomfortable. Then the last five inversions are pure hell. The restraints hurt and being dangled so that all the pressure of your weight is on your shoulders against them is horrific. Horrid, horrid ride that cheats in the inversion record.

The Smiler I've had a really fun ride on. I've also had horrible rides on it but at least it's comfortable :P

The problem is really with consistency on The Smiler. A good ride is actually good fun (though it feels more like a flat ride than a coaster), but a bad ride is an exercise in pain and endurance. It's still preferable to Colossus. Both rides I would avoid any kind of queue for, but The Smiler is the better coaster by a fair amount.

Easily Colosuss. I have never found it that rough, it's not glass smooth but not uncomfortable. I like all the inversions.

The trains are a bit rubbish though.

My last ride on The Smiler was decent, but I have found it very rough in the past. I like the theme but the second half can be torture.

No surprise what I will say here,

I haven't rode The Smiler "lately" I need to get over there soon so I don't know how rough it has become? It also does it run alright now? I know it has had a fair bit of downtime in its short life?
Reliability counts a lot for me, a ride with poor reliability, I hate queuing for because you can't trust the ride to circulate without issue for the next hour plus that you're waiting. This is the same reason I don't really like Stealth, so many times have I queued hours for that ride, especially in the summer when its busy and the ride has broken down as I'm standing on the steps to the station. Same with Saw and its the same with Smiler, a ride that potentially wastes Nemesis riding time is not a friend of mine.
Although I haven't had too many problems with Smiler (maybe because I haven't been much) I have heard it happens.
Colossus on the other hand is not as bad, apart from the occasional vomit that needs cleaning, I can't remember having to leave a queue because the ride has had a meltdown (I'm sure it does happen though) But 99% of the time when I walk through the park gates I know I'm getting a couple rides on Colossus.
Colossus also has faults though and I totally understand why it gets a bad rep, the ride looks a state for a start, which is a shame because the ride looks the exact opposite was it has a paint job, it's very nice to look at, but at the moment it is an eyesore.
The trains could do with replacing also, I personally don't find the ride uncomfortable, but I can see why others do, the trains are far to small, squeezing into the back of a car is a joke, how many walks of shame does Colossus have? Loads!
So yeah new paint job and trains would be an improvement for Colossus.
Smiler I have had good experiences with but I have seen it closed for too much, I need to get back to Alton soon and see how she rides these days though.

Colossus wins, but improvements are needed.

I haven't been on The Smiler, but Collossus could be vastly improved with the newer trains with lap bars. The new model has taken a mediocre ride and turned it into a really decent looper.

Smiler.
To be fair, I quite like Colossus too. Yes, it needs new trains and a paint job, but it's always delivered a fun ride.
But yeah, The Smiler wins this one. I'm actually quite a fan, I think it's a great ride.

I vote Colossus. I actually don't really care for the first half, but I found the barrel roles fantastic. I did indeed have low expectations, but I didn't find the roughness that bad.

Smiler on the other hand just rattled its way around the entire track urrrgghh. The only moments I thought were pretty good were the first inversion out of the station and the two airtime hills. Everything else had some head banging, rattles, and uncomfortable forces. Oh, and I found the OTSRs uncomfortably tight as well.

Smiler, Colossus was just awful... But I'm glad to hear they've improved the ride model. Looking forward to riding some in not too distant future...

I have never particularly felt safe on either ride but colossus has a more or less flawless safety record despite being 11 years older.

I have not been on Colossus since 2008 so Don;t want to say either way. I did rate The Smiler though. Guess ill have to go to Thorpe and then make my mind up.

I voted for colossus but it's a tough call. Both of these coasters are poor rides.

Colossus was very bumpy and uncomfortable when I last rode it.

The Smiler, I just hate everything about it. The music is terrible, the queue cages ate terrible, the ride itself is bumpy (especially for a new ride).
