Sex education for 5 year olds

I think five is much too young to be teaching that in school.

Now, around seven or eight years old is much better. Obviously, like Taylor said, you shouldn't like show the kids porn or anything, but introduce the concept and answer questions as they come.

I think my parents did a good job of this, introducing it in a way that helped me understand it.

I learnt Sex Ed in Primary School. I think I was in year 5, so I would what, 8 / 9 years old?

I'm not sure about 5 year olds, but I suppose it comes in handy if they ever asked a question. Just whip out the book, explain and you have reference pictures to go with it. Handy.

Jesus, the only thing I knew about sex at that age was that I got a weird tightening whenever that crocodile in Peter Pan would strip Captain Hook of all his clothes.

Which, I'm sure, is the root cause of one of my turn ons.

I know kid's are going to be curious about where they come from. Even when I was little I asked my parents, and I got the "Jesus sent you here" bit (Whereas really I'm the guilt baby for my mom losing Gabriel.)

I think the creepiest thing is that I found a kids book called "where did I come from". The book mostly talks about gestation, but I still remember "a man inserts his penis in a woman's vagina" from the first page.

And the picture didn't help.

Anyway, personally I don't think any kids below 10 will give a crap about sex ed. I know for a fact that all I cared about as a kid was Pokémon, Sonic The Hedgehog, Spyro The Dragon and causing havoc with my friends. I'm pretty sure it's still the same for other kids today, only instead they only care about Ben10 or some rubbish like that.

That doesn't mean I'm saying the topic shouldn't be introduced to them, and by all means perhaps it's better that by that stage they're made aware of what lies ahead, but what I'm trying to say is they'll either just giggle at it (like I did in Year 5) or just not give a damn about it.

5 year olds should be taught how to dress themselves, cut along a line with scissors and be playing with toy cars, NOT be taught the concept of sex and relationships!

Personally, I think that sort of stuff is more preschool/kindy level stuff.

Education for 5 year olds should be a bit more advanced that that and well and truly be focusing on reading, writing and maths, and doing basic science/SOSE type stuff.

I mean yeah, If they were out teaching 5 year olds about frangers or whatever, then people might have a case against it.

But surely explaining what a penis and vagina is, and where a baby comes from sits within the basic sciency stuff 5 year olds should be taught about their bodies (Along with proper eating, what their other body parts do etc etc)
Certainly when I was at that age we were taught at this level, and anything about the mechanics of sex would've been beyond us.

Prior to secondary school,what we had wasn't called "Sex Ed", but rather "Family life" and instead of it being in the classroom it would be an evening they'd host at the school and your parents would come along to, and thats how you were taught.

Don't worry, you'll understand when you're no longer a student, enter the "real" world and start making proper money. That's when you'll notice social standards slipping and society crumbling.

Sex education didn't enter my schooling until I was 14. I guess life was more inncoent back then? My life certainly was.

With the internet and other forms of liberal communication making the world a smaller place, it is imperative that kids are taught about the safety and dangers of sex at an earlier age than I was. 10? 12?

I think 5 years old is too young for the next generation to learn about sex or creation. Maybe in a few generations time it will be acceptable, but now - No. Sex is no longer a taboo in society, but I think that kids should have a childhood without the stuff that should be reserved for responsible adults.

Educating people about something doesn't make them want to do it.

Also, you don't have to blatantly educate the ins and outs of sexual contact between human beings to teach children how the world works. I'm sure I grew up with a clear understanding of biology because of David Attenborough and because I was clever enough to realise that humans are no different.

I think it's important that children grow up with knowledge of sex and sexuality. Not in the horrible blatant style that's so popular these days, but an awareness of how the world works in general is of value and MOST people (even as adults) seem blissfully ill informed.

TV shows like Embarassing Bodies or Teen Sex or whatever its called show just how ****ing ignorant people really are. They ask questions that, quite frankly should be ****ing obvious, or sensationalise normal behaviour and conditions as being odd (even if the aim of the show is the opposite).

On one of those shows some ignorant ****wit asked "do all vaginas look the same". I want that kid shot.

In short, education should be about training people to be inquisitive and give a **** about everything. But good ****ing luck because most people are boring, ignorant and quite frankly stupid. (Or religious. Or both.)

I don't think sex education at 5 is a terrible thing. I've just had a little look at this book online and the whole 'special cuddle' thing is exactly how my mum described sex to me. I like that they focus on the intimacy of a relationship being one of the key factors in a sexual relationship. The way the book explains sex isn't explicit or gratuitous, it's merely informative, simple and to the point.

Books like this will help parents to explain sex and sexuality to their kids without the awkwardness of not knowing what to say. I think it's quite awesome.

I also agree that sex education in schools in crap. I know a few girls who have only recently discovered that females have three 'holes', they thought there were just two....And Joey, I cringed at that vagina question too, people really are uneducated morons.

I've encountered the belief that females urinate from their vagina, too. In fact I bet there are people reading this who thought that. It's a common misconception, worryingly. I've encountered females who didn't realise their urine wasn't gushing from their vagina.

It concerns me that people have no interest in like, just ...thinking? Or working stuff out...? It's not just sex ed that's a problem, either.

I remember a friend once being shocked that her dog had a period before they got her neutered. I mean really, wtf is wrong with people's brains?

The worrying thing about the "do all vaginas/penises look the same?" question is that WHY WOULD THEY WHEN ALL FACES/FEETHANDS/NECKS/SHOULDERS/ELBOWS/SKIN/NOSES LOOK DIFFERENT YOU ****ING MORON?

People freak out about the most normal of things when they finally notice them.
