Rollercoaster Top Trumps

Inverse

Hyper Poster
I think i remember some mention of such a thing exsisting when i very first joined CF. I was wondering if anyone knew anything, i'm just thinking: "damn, i want a set".

I know official Top Trumps don't make them. I believe they were something CF did as a one off in Limited quantities?

If they are unavailible commercially, or otherwise, i was thinking of making my own set. Doing a nice Photoshop job and maybe laminating them. If i do this would people be interested in a downloadable PDF to print some themselves? I think that other people might like them if i made them.

edit: I made this:

It's something I emailed the people who make Top Trumps aboyt a few years ago.

They liked the idea but the problem we had was selling them in parks. For example, Alton Towers might not sell them unless their coasters were top ones.

I believe Jayjay made a set of them in 2007.

Wasn't there a Top Trumps on CF members?

There was!

furie made them a couple of years ago.

I've still got them on my computer, I've printed them off, but never played them cause I don't know how!

Are Jayjay's still arround? or would people be interested in me making a new set?

I was thinking of only doing steel coasters, as woodies are not great for statistics, it wouldn't be fun to see some of our favorate woodies get smashed by average steelies. I was also going to feature UK coasters and then some of the big ones from around the world, to give perspective. There are 30 cards to an offcial Top Trumps deck.

UK coasters i was thinking of including:

Stealth
Inferno
Colossus
Vampire
Dragon's Fury
Nemesis
Air
Oblivion
Rita
PMBO
Infusion
The Ultimate

each one of those has a stat that could beat most of the others. 12 there, what would be best for the remaining 18 cards?

I got given a really neat set of Alton Towers top trumps for free when I stayed in the hotel there. :)

We have those too - only a few in the deck though.

Crow, just a tip (being somebody who has made the members set (must update that, and Rach - the instructions are included :p )).

You need top end cards which are almost unbeatable (but it's good form to have one area where they will loose to a low end(ish) card).

You then need low end cards, and lots of mid range cards. Woodies (like El Toro) would make good mid range cards if you had stats like "angle of drop", "total length" and "Top Speed". Or have an ambiguous field such as "thrill factor", where you can give it a higher score.

I'd say have a single card which is unbeatable on all but one stat. A couple unbeatable on all but two (mix in some drawn stats too maybe). Then another two which are just damn good.

On the bottom end, have one card which generally has the lowest, but has two fields which can be drawn with other low end cards, or mid-range cards.

Have four to eight poor cards where they only have one field better than the other low end cards, and the rest which are lower than, or equal to mid range cards.

The rest are a mix and match of figures between your low end and high end cards, some in the upper ranges, some in the lower - make an even spread. There should be five cards make you feel great, one card which makes you weep (I think mine was Mushroom  ), a few cards make you groan, and the rest you just see pass through your hand without too much of a worry.

It does take a fair amount of thought to make a set which is balanced enough to play well, giving that nice back and forth the game requires without giving the holder of the top five cards the absolute advantage all of the time - they need to be able to lose their top trump and fear for it.

I produced mine in Word, then set them up as an Adobe Acrobat document for people to download. I printed a set on card and cut them out - it's a pain to do though.

Good luck, and have fun :)

I'm starting to understand what the term 'top trump' means.

Add Rage, Grand National, Scenic Railway (Dreamland) to your list. You could use steepness, 'fun factor' and age as stats, that way Scenic could trump your top/almost invincible card by being ancient.

That's 15. You could start looking at your 'middling' coasters if you want to keep it all UK, or you'll need to expand to the rest of Europe.

There's a place in my heart for BPPB's Wild Mouse. Talk about standup/ejector airtime.

Damn ****! I'm on there, back when I was jacob21, why didn't I know about this! I'm the crappiest one in the deck!

Anyways,
Good luck on the cards Inverse.
Your Rita card looks great!

Similar avatar, i conceed.

Rollermonkey, i'm not sure about an age stat, steepness could be cool. I wasn't going soley UK. I was think maybe half the pack UK and the rest good coasters from around the world. Kingda Ka could be a real high card. I was going to use Coaster Force's Force Factor too. That could help woodies out.

Not included Saw yet... once it's open it'll have a Force Factor stat and i could include it.

Sorry, I tend to go by avatar rather than username  Then Taylor helped me into the fail corner

Ka would be good, but you could use length, or inversions to help balance the card down a bit. The thing is, you also need to stay realistic. If Ka is the trump card, people will discount your pack as rubbish, as Ka isn't one of the best coasters. Stats wise it's potentially good, but people just won't like the fact such a simple ride is tops. I don't know if you get what I mean?

I always go back to my Dinosaur top trumps. T-Rex was the trump card, with Diplodocus coming in a weighty second. It felt right, as you knew from all the books you'd watched and films you'd seen they were the famous, the most talked about, the most well known Dinosaurs, and Top Trumps gave you the reasons why.

Oh, and I recommend an avatar change ;)

It looks like we've got some colour blindness on this CF... lol

As for the Top Trumps. I like the idea very much and the Rita card you've created is stunning.

But how can you overlook Rattlesnake at Chessington?!

I suppose you can't please everyone though.

People seem interested in it if i were to do a set.

I'll collect together stats and data on many coasters and then pick which ones will go into the deck to fit a formula similar to Furie's (although finding 1 unbeatable coaster will be niegh on impossible). I like the stats i've got represented on my Rita card best, steepness is cool too, i can't have too many statistics though and those ones are readily available on RCDB etc..

Ahh I remember those.. back when I was relatively new. My how things have changed.

FURIE, MAKE NEW ONES!! :p

I beg to differ...

In the sharks deck, the trump card is unquestionably the Whale Shark. Being the shark which is effectively the Ka of the shark world; but instead of being the tallest and the fastest, it is the biggest and has the most babies

Whereas, going by your theory, you would expect the Great White of Jaws fame to be number 1 and it's actually quite poor

I see your logic but I don't think that it has to be followed when making a trumps deck. Your earlier post about having a hierarchy I am totally with. However, the trump card does not necessarily have to be the most impressive of the bunch, like T. Rex in the dino set.
