"Now Showing"

V/H/S: Viral

What an utter load of ****! My god, it was awful. I enjoyed the second one a lot, and had a mild hope that this would be a bit better, but alas it only had creepy moments, nothing to outright scare me. Like, I wasnt even sure what all was going on, as some dude was running around on a bike for nearly the entire movie, it showed people with random nosebleeds that started after they got a phonecall....video call?....of some sort. Then it would pop over into one of the shorts, which made no **** sense at all. The best one of the shorts was the Mexican Skateboarding one, and that was utterly dire at best.

Like, how did it go from something decent, to utter ****?

The parallel universe short did unsettle me the most, but thats mainly due to the whole concept within the movie being that Satanic-like worshipping for generations has altered the human bodies into some Alien/Tremors type thing.

Wish I had pirated it instead. 2/10

Ugh.....

Re: "Now Showing"

Premier: Big Hero 6

I have to admit, I was pretty pumped for this movie when I heard Marvel and Disney would be making a joint animated feature film. It was a spectacular film that mixed Marvel elements with Disney animation including Marvel's signature Stan Lee camio as Fred's dad. The story was captivating even though it was a bit different than the original comic, but they were able to get most of it in. I have to say, it was one of the best animated movie released this year. 9/10

It even has a Marvel cutscene! (WATCH TILL THE VERY END!)

Re: "Now Showing"

I've read nothing but good reviews for it. People are saying it's as good as Wreck it Ralf which is fine by me.

So jealous you've got to see it already. It's really getting to me that my Twitter feed is just full of Big Hero 6 gasms. We don't get it till Feb, so frustrating.

Fury

I found this a little tedious, it was rather slow and dull and the battle sequences looked like they were out of Star Wars what with their luminous red and green shots flying about (seriously, what the hell was that about?). Despite this there were a few scenes which contained some seat gripping intensity. Overall I felt like the film was all over the place and yeah, quite dull.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in 3D.

3D was pretty much non-existent apart from on the animated intro. It should have been awful but was actually watchable, a passable blockbuster. Did Megan Fox swap her face with someone else?

Book of Life

Annoyingly in 2D, could really tell it would have been glorious in 3D. Really enjoyed this one, the style was a little random but overall the animation was fantastic. Slightly confused by the God characters, especially towards the end but it's a bright little family film with a few laughs.

^Tracers are very real and I was suitably impressed that they were used in the trailer from an accuracy point of view.

Not seen the film though as I've heard nothing but bad about it.

Interstellar

Been waiting since this was announced, so I was at the first showing of the day in IMAX. First off, this movie needs to be seen in IMAX if possible, absolutely beautiful. It is quite long, just shy of three hours.

I loved it, for about the first 2 hours and 15 minutes, and then the last 5. It was quite preachy ands smug in parts, but it was very enjoyable. The cast does well and it was very intense. Hans Zimmer crushed it with the score. I'm a Nolan fan, I can admit he is overrated, and this is one of his better films. I'm quite conflicted about that 20 minute segment in there.

So, see it.

Interstellar -

Not Christopher Nolan's best, but far from his worst. I think the plot could have done with fleshing out a bit more in some areas and could have had better flow, but it was still hugely impressive. If you can see it in 70mm IMAX, do it - you won't regret it. Some of the visuals matched to Hans Zimmer's stellar (excuse the pun) soundtrack gave me chills.

8/10

Nymph()maniac Volume I and II

Foreword, this was a 5 hour movie that cut 45 minutes of hardcore sex and one other scene (later) to make two, two hour installments.

Interesting life story of a nymp and her sexual adventures through somewhere in England. The story is retold after she is found beaten in an ally, and the scientist from the Thor movies finds her. The movie touches on several "taboo" subjects of the human body including but not limited to: child exploration of bodies, sexual competitions, fetish, S&M, rape, etc... The first volume was one of the better artsy movies ive seen in a while. It also includes Shia Labouf and a fake cock/digitally imposed face on a pornstars body. The witty banter and "smarterst guy in the room" commentary are surprisingly un douche and make the movie flow.

The second volume was a total let down. The movie spirals off into a "dark circle", and almost feels like the director randomly made up scenes to fill his ultimate goal. The ending, without spoiling too much (for a film that came out a year ago), was a complete 180 and ws basically the director telling you to suck his D. The moral of the story, I guess, is all men, even an "A-Sexual Virgin", are slaves to their cock.

So, I do and don't want to find the uncut version. Like I said from what I have read there are 45 minutes of explicit sex (the cut version is full of full penetration, oral, fisting, etc..), and a simulated abortion scene that lasts for 10 minutes. Apparently the abortion scene is extremely graphic, but from what viewers have said was the most impactful acting in a movie that had a lot of it.

Anyways:

Volume I: 8/10
Volume II: 5/10

I got dragged along to some arty w@nk on Monday night. It was some film called Voyage by some Hong Kong director I've never heard of who really needs to get someone to proofread his English scripts, and was basically just a bunch of short stories about suicide with a couple of very tenuous connections.

It was art though because it had loads of cock and minge in it.

The director and a couple of the actors were there for a Q&A afterwards, which I didn't realise or I wouldn't have gone.

Interstellar

Visually amazing, especially in Imax, with fantastic sound as well; the roar of the spaceships really made the whole cinema vibrate, but not in an overly loud way. It must be down to low frequencies or something, but it was really immersive.

It was overly long to be honest, and somewhat predictable to an extent:

As soon as the daughter character got the "stay" message right near the beginning, it was obvious where the message had come from and who the "ghost" was.

I'm glad I saw it in Imax as, as an overall experience, it was great. If I'd have waited for the DVD and watched it at home, I can't imagine I'd be quite so positive about it.

Re: "Now Showing"

I'm glad you've said that Gavin, everyone else seems to be pissing their pants over it but I'm assuming it's just yet more Nolan overhype?

Saw it yesterday and definitely worth a watch.

The first 2 hours are excellent. And the ending is pretty good I just wasn't overly fussed on how the 20/25 mins played out to get from A to B.

seems as though it was all very convenient, solutions were just there. Hard to give a proper review without spoiling it though

Deffo not a patch on Dark knight but I enjoyed it more than Inception

Re: "Now Showing"

See I have a problem with Nolan in that you can't deny his filmmaking is excellent, but his plots are contrived and his characters are usually very basic. It irritates me that people give him praise for being so innovative and yet most of the time his films are just a stylistic retelling of age old storylines.

^Agreed. Kim Kardashian's ass crack has more depth then a Christopher Nolan character. Some of his plots are so basic, I start to wonder if its done intentionally as an insult to the general public?

Jordan's mostly wrong, but along the right lines.

The characters are always amazing, the problem is his plots. Like Inception, Interstellar has a horrendous plothole at the end that completely ruins all of the movie up until that point.

Nolan is irritating because he leads you down amazing films only to ruin his own project at the last second. Surely he does it on purpose?

This is exactly right. It didn't ruin the movie but it did make the Everything seem so coincidental. When the story was headed towards a dead end something magically resolved the problems.

There's always haters for every director though.

You can't deny that the dark knight trilogy is one of the best ever made.

people have similar love/hate for Tarantino

Yeah, the Dark Knight trilogy is amazing. But Nolan is yet to make another good film. Even David Bowie couldn't help him.

Again I agree but the sheer fact that we're discussing him/Interstellar and that you've seen his movies means he's succeeded. He's got our money! Box office talks.

I despise AVATAR but the box office says it's the greatest movie ever made.

Different people's tastes really. I love nothing more than sitting watching the next 2/3 hours of what's happening in the marvel universe, others think it's terrible.

I hated Man Of Steel, I love Lord of the rings but hate the hobbit trilogy.

The departed is in my top 10 movies but so is Aliens

Re: "Now Showing"

I don't disagree that he makes enjoyable cinema, what irritates me is that he's held up as this master of creativity and cinematic genius, when in fact he's just very good at retelling stuff that's been done 1000 times.
