I adored Lightning Racer/s. It's that distinction between "favourite" and "best" though. It's always incredibly difficult to successfully be able to work it out and justify going one way or the other.
Don't get me wrong, both sides are good coasters, but they don't satisfy (or tick all the boxes) whatever is required to make a coaster great.
Does it have masses of incredible air time? No.
Is it steep? No.
Is it incredibly fast and full of a wild out of control feeling? Only slightly.
Is it intense? No.
Do you ever fear for your life? No.
So why is it so good? I think it's simply got the correct balance of everything in just the right doses so it's constantly amusing you. Is great comedy being tickled in the tummy? No, but it makes you laugh anyway. It's just a raw, gut enjoyment. It's so hard to explain, but in your head you know that it's not doing anything better than any other coaster, other than somehow being entertaining.
With Boulder Dash, El Toro, et al you come of breathless thinking "wow, that was such a great ride" and then you either go again, or wander off. With Lightning Racer it's simply "OMG, I'm in stitches laughing I just have to run around and have another go". I think it just doesn't quite kick any of your senses hard enough to make it fantastic, but it means that physically you can just ride and ride and ride and be taken to just short of it hurting something.
I don't know if that makes any sense? It's how Megafobia certainly used to make me feel and probably The Nash too, but it does what both those did and makes it much better. In terms of wooden coasters, it's below only Boulder Dash and El Toro for me and even then it's a tough head decision not to put it above El Toro.
But yes, Lightning Racer is just an overall, massively appealing ride and I've never understood why it never does better. I don't know if it's the company while riding it? People who ride on their own just aren't getting the full racing effect?
