I just went to look for where Beast resides.

47 </3

It's awesome people are crazy.

And the Lightning racers are in the 30s... with Megafobia sat between them, seriously?

To be fair, Beast during the day is quite lame. At night though, complete and insanely bad ass.

Beast in the day is still better than most of the coasters above it, though.

And Lightning Racer<3333 Needs a fan club. It's just so much fun. Does anyone else find that visually, to ride, it's just... delightful? It just made me smile so much watching the other train dart about. It's what I imagine racing on the back of bumblebees feels like.

I adored Lightning Racer/s. It's that distinction between "favourite" and "best" though. It's always incredibly difficult to successfully be able to work it out and justify going one way or the other.

Don't get me wrong, both sides are good coasters, but they don't satisfy (or tick all the boxes) whatever is required to make a coaster great.

Does it have masses of incredible air time? No.
Is it steep? No.
Is it incredibly fast and full of a wild out of control feeling? Only slightly.
Is it intense? No.
Do you ever fear for your life? No.

So why is it so good? I think it's simply got the correct balance of everything in just the right doses so it's constantly amusing you. Is great comedy being tickled in the tummy? No, but it makes you laugh anyway. It's just a raw, gut enjoyment. It's so hard to explain, but in your head you know that it's not doing anything better than any other coaster, other than somehow being entertaining.

With Boulder Dash, El Toro, et al you come of breathless thinking "wow, that was such a great ride" and then you either go again, or wander off. With Lightning Racer it's simply "OMG, I'm in stitches laughing I just have to run around and have another go". I think it just doesn't quite kick any of your senses hard enough to make it fantastic, but it means that physically you can just ride and ride and ride and be taken to just short of it hurting something.

I don't know if that makes any sense? It's how Megafobia certainly used to make me feel and probably The Nash too, but it does what both those did and makes it much better. In terms of wooden coasters, it's below only Boulder Dash and El Toro for me and even then it's a tough head decision not to put it above El Toro.

But yes, Lightning Racer is just an overall, massively appealing ride and I've never understood why it never does better. I don't know if it's the company while riding it? People who ride on their own just aren't getting the full racing effect?

I understand you Furie and I don't get it either. I think theres this psychological concept of "good" that sometimes gets in the way for fear of being judged on our tastes of fun. At least if we rate things by objective means then there is no risk of that. Films which are just fun for entertainments sake get slandered. It's pretentious bullsh!t from enthusiasts in all areas... Be that food or wine, film, games or roller coasters. For me though, I just cannot understand how anyone can fail to have a fantastic time on Lightning Racer. It's honest, unpretentious, fun.

This is why I don't like the "Toro has no soul" argument, either. So what, it's just good. It doesn't know how wooden coasters are "supposed to be" and I like to think were it sentient it wouldn't give a damn anyway.

There's a lot of coasters that I think get forgotten about or underrated because they fall short of some categorical judging made up by connoisseurs.

One coaster that doesn't fall prey to that but never does as well as it should is one of the world's undeniably best rides, Orlando's Revenge of the Mummy. Why, just why, does it do so POORLY? I've never met a single person who didn't, when questioned about it directly, say it's outstanding. Yet few people mention it off the top of their head when asked what their favourite coaster is. Do people kinda forget it's a coaster? Well, maybe, but if it's in the list on easy ballot generator how could you miss it?

^ not wishing to get into a great debate about this...

I think El Toro is great, only just edged by Voyage for me.
I really like Lightening Racers too; were one of my earlier "big woodies" and they are great fun.

But RotM at Orlando I think is just average. Bland even. It amazes me when people rate it at all.

So all that goes to show; opinions are like *******s , eveyones got one.

Haha, wow, for real. Well you proved me wrong.

Seem to agree pretty much on woods though, how peculiar. Where did you place Ravine Flyer?

^ yep for real!

Not ridden RFII though; out of the top 10 in the poll I've only been on 4 of them (Toro/Voyage/Phoenix/Colossos) so I'm missing a few biggies.

(and I don't understand people raving about Phoenix or Raven@HW either!)

I think generally Lightning Racers come about where I'd put them. They're really fun, but, they're not anywhere near as good rides as say, Troy or other GCIs.

I literally struggle to understand why Toro wins though. If it's for the airtime, it's literally not as good as Colossos...

And then, how anyone could EVER say it's better than Boulder Dash really quite confuses me. I literally can't see what they could prefer about it?

It's got two fab hills, and that's IT.

Urgh.

Agreed completely on all fronts.. except my last rides on Voyage were below my expectations on top of the fact that RFII just keeps getting better for me.

I'm also baffled that RotM is even rated as 'ok'.. besides the crappy theme, the ride was jerky and disgusting anyway.

Woah, woah... woah. What? 400 creds and no Ravine Flyer?? SORT IT OUT. I think Ravine Flyer had some of the things that stop Voyage being truly outstanding. Voyage is, as much as I hate to say it, too long. It's really, really, long. You end up being distracted by the length and because it's not the kind of coaster you can just sit back and ride, you have to brace yourself a lot, it really seems to matter? That's how I felt, anyway. Where as Ravine Flyer seemed perfect, and hit the brakes when I was ready for it to. The location of Ravine Flyer is also a little better. Holiday World is just so far from everything. </3

I missed out on Raven. It was closed when I went cuz they were using it's trains on Voyage. Lols.

Crappy theme? W..what? *stares*

Also this topic just reminds me how much I need Boulder Dash in my life. June. I think I'm almost more excited about free soda.

Has anyone got the new little woody that's near there at Quassy? We were gonna run there in the morning before Lake Compounce to get the cred. It looks cute.

I've never been one for theme Joey, you should know that by now. :)

I've been to Quassy with UC actually, but that was before Wooden Warrior. Be prepared for a true American experience..

Yep I do recognise I have conspicious "Boulder Dash" and "RFII" holes in my life.

For that matter I have (easier to get) "Balder" and "Troy" shaped holes too. Poor effort me.

:-)

I'm excited now! Is it better than Walmart, Big Bass Pro shops, Busch's Christian concerts and Waffle House?

Barely. Combine that and add a ferris wheel. ;)
