Chessington: World of Construction

peep

CF Legend
Hey all. So I decided to pop over to Chessington for a bit today as the weather wasn't meant to be awful. After some train woe I finally got to the park about 12:45. First thing I wanted to do is see how close I could get to the Scorpian Express/Runaway Mine Train construction. On my way I stopped to look from the Monkey and bird garden the new enclosures being built and I see the new contraption (which sounds like it'll be kids only - booooo).

The idea is that you'll be able to walk over monkey enclosures. Sounds exciting.

Oh I also watched the African drummers...

Sorry for the blurry image

In the Children's zoo area I saw some of the Marmosets and skunks.

I was able to look at the construction of Scorpion Express pretty easily from here. This new shed being built sounds like it'll house the new cattlepen queue so it won't be long before we dub it the shed of despair.

The old queueline says goodbye

1798672_10153853428355360_2111759684_n.jpg

I've not seen this test carriage before

Now I know what you're thinking. Peep, why take a picture of the floor? Well I'll tell you why, for several years Nic has pointed out to me that the bottom piece of wood panelling on this stall was broken/kicked in and it has finally been fixed. So I included it to show they care about the things that nobody else is going to notice.

1908246_10153853428520360_1630608084_n.jpg

I doubt they've even touched this

I went to ride Tomb Blaster which had a 20 minute wait. The two women behind me in the queueline were talking about other rides (WDW, Alton etc) which made the wait far more interesting. The queue had a whole host of new posters advertising the on ride photo merch. Apparently if you buy one now you get a free download to your phone or some lark.

I think this small poster was new

1661726_10153853428760360_1094184345_n.jpg

My score was ridiculously high as per usual. Go me.

1922225_10153853428970360_792672924_n.jpg

What a sad state, anyone want to tell me why the site still looks like this after well over a year?

9943_10153853429050360_1521021185_n.jpg

So it looks like there won't be any large rockwork coming back. On the floor are currently some small rocks and some very fake looking cacti. The steel going up at the moment is clearly going to be for a horrible backdrop to cover up the maintenance road. It's all very disappointing.

I made my way over to Wanyama Village past the very closed Zufari (though they were doing something near the flamingos). In the middle of the village there is a small pond, they've now turned it into a new enclosure which works really well.

There was also some new signage about, they've gone for a different style (again).

From the large viewing platform you could get a good look at the construction of the new hotel expansion. They're advertising an August opening.

I then spent a fair amount of time catching various shows. I caught Madagascar where everyone decided to go, the place was rammed. I took a funny photo after the pyrotechnic(s) went off...

1661497_10153853430680360_242115664_n.jpg

The whole of the Mexicana area is getting a lick of paint due to the Scorpion. It doesn't look like what's inside the buildings will be changing.

I had a few minutes to kill before the penguin presentation so went through the Sea Life centre.

1620841_10153853430930360_1333648596_n.jpg

I then watched the penguins being fed before moving over to Sealion bay for the Sealion show which is far more exciting and also rammed with people.

1966784_10153853431040360_342746493_n.jpg

I liked these little posters for the half term event

1932479_10153853431170360_1946106251_n.jpg

So the new poster art suggests the cred will be getting a fire and water effect (both of which will last 2 seconds).

1900156_10153853431260360_753180475_n.jpg

Question time: What's missing here?

After watching the sealions I popped into Creepy Caves which is still half empty with promises of new creatures coming soon. I managed to catch a lizard eating a cricket which was exciting.

Hello, I'm your new nightmare for this evening

That's what the above is

Anyone remember the fire that broke out in December? Well the creaky cafe (which was new for last year) is now totally gone and the wall of Bubbles that backed on to it has been taken down and should be replaced soon. They're also doing a lot of work on the tower.

I then went down the Trail of the Kings. Hoping to see the Lynx the park got last year I was shocked to find an Ocelot in their place.

But don't worry, the Lynx have just moved into where the Leopards used to live.

The Tigers had only recently been given food so it was interesting watching them eat their meal.

After that I left the park. Not too long before I'll be back when the whole park re-opens.
Thanks for reading.

What an absolute shambles.

The whole place just seems to have gone to pot. How is any of that supposed to open in time for the whole park re-opens? It's gonna be another total **** season for Chessington World of Adventures.

But that aside love the report, John :p subtle humour, I like it ;)

Is it just Tomb Blaster that is open? Or is there anything else? The website (predictably) is not very forthcoming.

The place was bad enough when it wasn't completely falling to pieces. Bring back Camelot!

Cheers for the report Peep.

Cannot believe they are not replacing theming on that coaster, what a joke.

Gavin it's been falling apart for 20 years now, to think it used to be better than Thorpe when I was a kid a few years ago lol :)

Christ I've been going to the park longer than you guys have been alive lol.

Berry bouncers, jumbos and hocus pocus hall are also open this week.

The work (or lack thereof) on Runaway is pretty damning of how bad the park is these days...

Dreadful that it's meant to open next month...

Urgh one of the best parts of Runaway Train was the weird queue line, now it's just been reduced to an even blander +1. Mergh. Stupid Chessington.

Chessington: World of Construction Part 2

To save filling up the forums with endless Chessington trip reports I asked John if I could use his thread to post mine from Wednesday. And to be honest this report is going to have much the same theme as John's report anyway haha.

I am currently in the process of applying to university. Today I had an applicant day at Kingston University. Originally I had asked dad to drop me off north of London where I'd get the tube to central London and enjoy some time on the Eye and a wander around. I decided time would be stupidly tight (I needed to be at Kingston at 1). Quick check of the map, the uni is only a 10 minute walk from Chessington World of Adventures!

I arrived at opening time, 10am. First site of construction was based in the coach car park. Queue JCB #1:

I forgot to pick up a map and didn't realise just how much of the park was actually shut off so, expecting to see some fire damaged bubbleworks I actually hit a dead end.
1920431_10202599686067740_80301898_n.jpg

I took some sneaky photos of the 'Market Square' through the fencing which has been turned into an honorary car park!...oh, and a place to store scaffolding.

Watched the last few minutes of the sealion show thingy, all I could see it could manage was clap.

I walked back down towards the entrance where I watched some live African Drummers. It was actually quite fun.

I headed towards Tomb Blaster, the only attraction I actually wanted to ride...well the only attraction I wanted to ride that was open.

I saw JCB #2:
1743640_10202599688107791_1329823408_n.jpg

Other scaffolded and fenced off areas:

1908228_10202599689107816_223164079_n.jpg

I passed a rather decrepit looking Rattlesnake.
1891163_10202599690107841_1496025284_n.jpg

Passing by later I noticed the lift hill was covered in scaffolding
1781896_10202599702148142_1249091942_n.jpg

Rameses in its usual scaffolding house. I won't post a picture, you've seen it enough.

Just past Tomb Blaster the rest of the park was fenced off. Taking pics over the fence was a graveyard of bins, broken fence, and just general disarray.
1798793_10202599692547902_1758406430_n.jpg

Dragon Falls has also been drained for the off-season which you can just about see from this poor quality picture
1904097_10202599692387898_680211227_n.jpg

Then rode Tomb Blaster.
1620607_10202599693627929_188929117_n.jpg

Decided as I was on my own I wouldn't bother with the whole shooting thing and just enjoy the ride for what it was. Good decision, I saw things I haven't seen before and have never paid attention to, I particularly enjoyed the cobras jumping up, never seen them before and they surprised me.

Decided I'd have a proper look at the runaway train, sorry, Scorpion Express. You know in general what's going on there and have seen loads of pics but have some more just for fun

How they plan to get that up and running by next month I can't even comprehend.

Had a wander round the children's zoo, I'm assuming the animals have been taken away for the winter as all that was there was a hose and a pressure washer.
1891158_10202599698868060_177439012_n.jpg

Went to watch the 'Animal Antics Show' in the Wild Wood. It was pretty dull, the poor woman couldn't get the green parrot to fly. There was also a 'bearcat', well technically a binturong but you can see where the name 'bearcat' comes from.
1922282_10202599700388098_526000844_n.jpg

I considered the Flying Jumbos but decided against it.

The entrance to Zufari wasn't blocked off, I couldn't believe my luck...alas it was closed. I was, for some reason, disappointed, I've always enjoyed it. For those of you that haven't ridden it has splash pools which given the huge amount of rain that area of the country has had over the past 2 months I was expecting to be incredible, instead they were the driest thing for miles around. Typical Merlin, can't create a puddle when the whole country's flooded
1902839_10202599704308196_1366803196_n.jpg

Turns out the Zufari entrance isn't shut because the 'Wanyama Village & Reserve' was open. I'd never heard of it so figured why not. Why the bamboo isn't on the other side of this gate to keep with the theming I have NO idea. Daft. Just daft.

To top the morning off I has a wander round the sea life centre, it was larger than I was expecting but nothing special.

1618682_10202599722548652_1310590023_n.jpg

After that I decided to leave. The place is in an awful state at the moment, can they get everything sorted out before the March full opening? No. I had quite a relaxed meander round the park which I can't lie, was rather enjoyable.

The reason the Zufari water level was low was because that's what I saw them working on, they had drained it and we're fixing some sort of pipe work.

Can't believe you didn't know about the Wanyama area you noob ;)

I know! I just never knew it existed. To be fair I only went to Chessington twice last year but even so, that's no excuse. ;)

Nice reports guys.

In Chessingtons defence, they've done a nice job on that Market square area:

From TPG.

It's definitely nicer now they've opened it up a bit but now they need to add some much needed seating.

I agree with Martyn and John. (Sorry Neal :p) I think that making it look like a 'generic town centre' actually modernises the place, it looks cleaner, so a positive for the park at least but yeah, seating would be gooood :p

That's quite a makeover for the square. Think I'll make up my mind when I see it. Are all the 'old wooden' buildings still there?
