The new Live Movie maker thing is annoying, but better than Movie Maker.
The biggest issue with Movie Maker is that you're very limited on, well, everything.
It's great for very simply dumping on a new soundtrack and adding in clips (with very simple - will always look like Movie Maker - titles).
However, if you want to mix (in bits and bobs) sound here and there, you need to render, then cut and re-render, cut and re-render. It also crashes and is generally ****.
Sony Vegas is the next step up. It's very similar to Movie Maker in that it's very clear what your progression is. You can start to knock together much more complex edits very rapidly and without any real need to learn anything.
With a little play and practice, titling becomes complex (as in you can create complex titles) and adding in simple effects like picture in picture, combining videos, etc is easy to make happen. I edit all my videos in Sony Vegas, and when I'm stuck on how to do something, there are loads of YouTube videos out there that explain it to you and they tend to be very simple to do, but the complex stuff is hard to find.
So Vegas is simple for simple and simple for complex, but complex to find the complex
Adobe Premier is fantastic, but you actually do need to learn to use it. You trade off massively powerful editing ability for having to use your brain. Photoshop is the same. Once you know what you're doing and how to do it, the tools are fantastic, but you can't just sit there and go "I'll now make a video".
So it all depends on how much effort you want to put in, and how important the final results are to you. If you look at Hixee's videos, they're very "MTV", mainly because they're put together in that fashion. Mine are much simpler because they're "doing a job". I'm not creating art

Erm, using Vegas to add in "effects" to enhance the video:

Using it to produce a "rounded" video with audio mixes, "advanced" text, etc:
