USA Honeymoon Trip

Final Parks - Universal Studios and IOA.

Part 1.

The plan was to go into IOA first but just do a few bits and bobs and then head over to the studios for the rest of the day, with a 2nd day planned for mopping up missed things. It nearly went to plan.

503.jpg

Fingerprint entry cards, good idea, shame they don't always work. Faffed around for 5 mins trying to get the machine to accept my fingerprint, eventually worked, humph.

505.jpg

In we went, but we had no time for perusing the gift shops etc at this point, attractions must be ridden.

678.jpg

First up was the big green machine which dominates IOA. Helen sat out the first run as she hadn't seen it complete a circuit, so she took the camera and watched on while I literally walked on the ride. Here was my first interaction with the world famous Universal theming. It's outstanding, the queue line was like nothing i'd ever experienced, and was just a taster of what was to greet my eyes over the next 2 days. Back row as per usual for the first ride.
Ops were very quick, considering there is no seperate exit platform the throughput is quicker than expected. They ran 2 trains, even that early in the morning with no queue.

B&M's only launch is ok, it's nothing compared to the Intamin accelerators, but feels faster than it is due to the tunnel enclosing it, however, the zero-g is not taken at any great speed. This isn't actually a bad thing, i liked it, and the cobra roll was decent, as was the loop. The dive into and out of the mist is great. In fact, from the launch to the first corkscrew is excellent, it was all going swimmingly until the that element.
It goes from being a smooth but forceful ride to just being a rough one, the entrance into the corkscrew just didn't feel right, no smooth entrance just a slight shift of entrance position into the invertion. It was not good. The loop after was ok, but not as smooth as the initial loop, but then the ride starts snaking around for no apparent reason. The smoothness of the first 20 seconds are lost in a blaze of tiny track corrections which stifles any enjoyment of the 2nd half of the ride. AND IT HASN'T EVEN HIT THE MCBR YET!!
It slightly redeems itself with the next corkscrew, but again starts snaking after that to the final brakes.

This is probably the only B&M which i both love and hate with a passion. God knows why the track doesn't want to curve properly, it totally ruins the ride. But the first part of it is absolutely brilliant. Gutted.

We both rode it again and took a 2nd row seat, it wasn't quite as rough, but it was still very unpleasant from the corkscrew on. First ride done, and not impressed, was it a bad omen for IOA?

512.jpg

NO!! A resounding NO! What a brilliant Shot ride, easily the best shot I've been on (only been on 3 but hey?!). Again, the theming is excellent and considering it's a tower the ops weren't too bad.
I was genuinely surprised when it launched, and enjoyed the shot but the best part of this ride is the massive ejector airtime at the top, you are literally flung out of the seat into the restraints as the car is forced down. Such a great feeling.

My faith had been restored, what delight is in store next? Spiderman of course!

Queue theming once again out of this world and a new car type for me. All these dark rides are firsts as far as i remember. Again a nice quick queue, only 5 minutes. This one's hard to place for me. Most of it was really enjoyable, the effects are excellent and you really feel part of the action but there was one part which made me a bit green. You get flung up in the sky and saved by mr spidey, but that scene of flying through the air was a little too much for my stomach to handle. Felt a bit blegh, other than that it was excellent though. A good dark ride.

We had a wander through the rest of the marvel island, snapping pics of the area, the attention to details to really immerse the guests in this park is ridiculous, good ridiculous of course. Already at this stage i knew IOA was the best "Themed" park i've visited.

Anyway, made our way over to Toon Lagoon. Once again, the theming jumps out and slaps you in the face in true toon style.

Small fountains of water everywhere, life sized cannons, huge facades on all the shops and food places. It's really like stepping into a comic world. I appreciated it all, but I was here for what's known as one of the worlds best water rides.

514.jpg

I'd heard a lot about this bad boy, so was expecting fantastic theming, a few short and one excellent final drop.
Luckily we got there quite early and there was no queue, but I can imagine the potential queue on this ride. It wins the prestigious "longest queue line in the world" award, so, so long.
My expectations were justified though, I love the fact that there is actually a story to the ride, the short drops are all great and have a decent amount of splash, especially the first one. I also love that the lifts aren't boring and have theming and story integrated into them, at no point were we bored.
Then there's the final splashdown which not only looks great from off ride but it rather thrilling on ride, it just keeps on going all the way to the final splashdown. Such a good finale, and the last part of the ride with the storytelling was an unexpected plus.

All in all it's the best flume type ride I've been on. There is nothing which lets it down. Well played Universal, you've won in my eyes.

It was getting hot so we had made the right decision doing Ripsaw Falls, fortunately we were nicely soaked but fancied doing the Bilge Rat Barges ride before going to the Studios, unfortunately it was closed. No matter, added to the list of things to do the following day. We then decided to move to the other park.

516.jpg

By the time we got to the studios we were nearly dry, which was good considering the epic amount of sitting we were to doing.

Despicable Me had an hour queue so we decided on Shrek 3D, 20 mins is reasonable so we got in line.

517.jpg

The outside line had a decent amount of Shrek based decor to keep you interested, but any longer in the Q and I would have got bored, 20 mins was enough. The inside however took it to another level, loved the dungeon. The pre-show was excellent, a good ride host who was reasonably funny and for some reason looked like a mate of mine, Chubby Adam. The effects were nicely done and all in all kept our attention well.
The 4d ride itself was decent, a few water sprays, moving seats, cool ghostly air. If you like the Shrek films it's worth watching, but any longer than a 20 min wait and you'll be disappointed.

Despicable Me's queue time was still at the hour mark so we swiftly moved on, HRRR had a 45 min queue so decided to move round the park a bit to try to find some quicker attractions. Next up was the new ride - Transformers.

518.jpg

Optimus was doing a meet, greet and pic session, so we took a couple of pics. This was our first interaction with the characters, loads more to come.

549.jpg

Helen didn't fancy it as she wasn't keen on Spiderman and this was a similar attraction, so through the single rider line i went. It was only a 10 min queue anyway but I literally walked straight on. The only problem with this was missing a huge portion of the queue line and therefore lots of theming.
This was better than Spiderman, a lot better. I've been a fan of transformers since my youth, and enjoyed the newer films to an extent, so the story was fun. The cars span a lot but without being overly disorientating, but the thing about this is it's long, around 4 minutes in length and none of it is wasted. Constant action with the car being directly involved in the story nearly all the way through. It really is fantastic, some of the effects are jawdropping but there's no time to dwell on it as the next second you're being spun off and through a wall.
Next time you head to Universal don't miss it, it's truly a world class dark ride.

Time for a coaster - Revenge of the Mummy

All I knew about this was that it's an indoor coaster based on, yep, the mummy films. I wanted to be surprised so specifically didn't watch a POV.
I'm glad I didn't, the whole experience was brilliant. All the animatronics looks great and the fire effect on the ceiling actually made me cower in my seat due to the heat. The drops are excellent and the twists and banked turns are surprisingly good. The whole ride was smooth too, although maybe that was partly due to the fact that I was focusing on everything going on around me rather than the ride itself.
Great ending too, easily the best fake unload I've seen. Overall it was brilliant and I have nothing but good things to say about the whole ride. I'm looking forward to my next go on a Premier coaster, as this one set high standards.

We then took a stroll over towards the San Fransisco area of the park and decided to go on DISASTER!

519.jpg

Unfortunately this was a disaster of a ride.
+ points to the girl host, she acted it well. Also the final subway scene was ok, seen better water effects personally, the fire effects were good though.
- points for the totally burdonous pre show and filming portions, just plain boring and long.
The final "film" was also meh, got a few chuckles from other riders but not me. We both got off feeling short changed, even though the queue was only 5 minutes, the whole experience was closer to the half hour mark.

Men in Black next.

522.jpg

Went solo again as the guy on the entrance told Helen it can be quite bad for motion sickness so I again missed a load of queue line stuff, but honestly, i'm not sure if it's good or not. The phasers were interesting and yes, the theming is awesome, as are all the animatronics, but the guns seemed to only work sporadically and wouldn't register hits. The cars also spin waaaaaaaaay too much and I got a crap score :) Usually i do really well on these shooters so that's why it wasn't great haha.
It's also really annoying that the guns are so loud, so I didn't hear half the instructions on ride from Zed. Had no idea what i was doing half the time. But there are certain really good parts like the shootout between the cars (only found out what i was supposed to be shooting at after), the massive alien bug is awesome and the customized endings is a really nice touch.
I was dissapointted, but if I went again and went though the normal queue line and not rushed through, my opinion would probably change.

I met this guy, he was fab, sounded a lot like the Christopher Lloyd and was happy to goof around.

532.jpg

Then it was time for the Simpsons ride.

523.jpg

The queue only said 15 mins but they had breakdown so it ended up being 40 mins.
Ermagherd it was rubbish.
After waiting that amount of time i was left extremely dissapointted by the ride. It's the only dark ride of the trip which gave me whiplash. The story was full of action, but it was too quick and made very little sense. Too much took quickly, too jerky and left me with a very sore neck.
Not one I will revisit, and if it's still there when we go back with the boy, i'll have to bear it for his sake if he desperately wants to go.

We then decided to take a look at the childrens area near E.T. E.T is the only ride that's still in operation since I was last here, so for nostalgia reasons was a must. Love the indoor queue line, brought back some great memories and totally forgot about the personalized greeting so it was a nice reminder.
The ride itself was fun, much like i remembered it, well worth the 20 min queue.

Then we had a quick look at the Curious George play area and took a couple of pics for the boy, seems like the kind of run around place he would love.

537.jpg

Cred time, Woody Woodpecker

534.jpg

Very short, and only one circuit, but for a kiddy coaster it was good. A decent helix and a couple of adult headchoppers. Walk-on +1.

A few more bits to do in the studios before heading back into IOA.
Took a wander towards the exit to grab the Terminator "experience", something different to everything else we saw on the trip. Interesting angle on the series and enjoyed the mix of live action and 3d effects. The Terminator geek in me was satisfied.

We then found this

542.jpg

I don't think she ever found it :(

We then ran into a few more character experiences, I love this cheeky monkey

544.jpg

After seeing no movement on queue times for HRRR and Despicable Me we rode out the Twister.
I loved the film when it came out, and it's still watchable so it was nice to experience it, even if it was a little boring. Flying cow <3

That was all for the Studios, decided to do the last 2 things the following day so we went back into IOA for the final couple of hours as Harry Potter was supposed to be quieter at the end of the day.

Part 2 to come.

Final Parks - Universal Studios and IOA.

Part 2

Back we went into IOA, instead we went right, towards Seuss Landing and were greeted by the most outrageous colour I've ever seen.

551.jpg

It's just like walking into a Seuss book, such a fab childrens area, which has quirky rides to entertain the more young at heart as well.

558.jpg

We decided to go on the Caro-seuss-el as it looked utterly fab.

680.jpg

The characters are brilliant with a high level of detail. You have a small level you can move which moves the creature's head each way. It also has mirrors on the inside edge of the ride which give you funny body squishes etc, really fun. Great ride.

557.jpg

Moving on, knowing we'd have loads of time the following day for the rest of the attractions in this area, we moved onto one of my most anticipated areas of the trip.

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter

582.jpg

I'm a massive Potter fan, read all the books multiple times (the final book around 6 times), got all the films, got a bit of a crush on Emma Watson. Yeah, Harry's awesome. So coming here was a wonderful dream, BUT I WAS LIVING THE DREAM OMG!!

Geekness ran through me as I snapped pics of everything in Hogsmead, pics of the Hogwarts Express, pics of all the shops, pics of inside the shops, pics of the stuff in the windows, pics of the pubs... Yeah, there are a lot of pics from here, which I won't fill your screen up with, they are all via this link if you really want to see them http://s665.photobucket.com/user/delpiero_2009/library/Universal Studios_IOA?sort=3&page=1 but they are mainly for my Potterism.

Anyway, Forbidden Journey.
Here's one of my fave pics from the queue line, but again, I took loads. It's so dark in there a lot were rubbish and was doing them all on the move, no queue at all. Timed it perfectly :)

588.jpg

As the Geek that I am, I absolutely loved the queue line, it's been so well done you actually feel like you are in the castle looking at all the areas you remember so well from the films.

I knew this used the Robot Arm tech, which I'm not bothered about, Helen's motion sickness was about to be tested though.
The ride itself is excellent, a great mix of screens and animatronics, combined with very realistic movement. Until it broke mid ride. Screen froze but the arm kept moving. Helen freaked out, literally, had to hold her hand to keep her calm. But it gave me a chance to goon a bit.
Noticed that the arm plunges you into a sort of half golfball screen area, where each specific part of the screen portions of the ride take place. I was able to crane my neck to see the edge, there's no way I would have realized how it worked otherwise as the story was so engrossing.

Because it broke, I got straight back on (by myself this time) and had an excellent ride with no glitches. It really is fab, never been on anything like it before and due to loving the series so much it was perfect for me.

Next up was the obligatory kiddies coaster - Flight of the Hippogriff

590.jpg

10 min queue for this, definitely worth waiting for. But it broke just as we got put into the rows. Well, i say broke - they found something fell off the ride and decided to do a full check. Looked like half a spring, anyway, another 10 mins later and they gave it the all clear. Annoyingly they didn't stop the automatic announcements during this time so i'll forever have Hagrid's voice telling me to "Climb into the wicker Hippogriff" in my mind.
Once again perfectly themed, Hagrid's hut and the Pumpkin patch make an appearance, as well as Buckbeak bowing to you as you approach the lift hill.
As for the ride it's nothing special, a couple of jerky turns and long helix's. But it's all about the theme here.

Next up the Dragons.

599.jpg

Yes, it's not a proper pic of the coaster, but this was more interesting.

Dragons Horntail and Fireball, well, they were pretty rubbish by B&M Invert standards, and they don't duel, or didn't while I rode, or watched. I preferred the Fire one. They were obviously built to cater for the GP and offered very little to me.
But once again Universal have done a fab job with the theming. The queue line (2nd longest queue line ever) is themed to the Triwizard tournament, as well as oddly the car from book/film 2. So you see the Medi-tent from book 4, as well as the Goblet of Fire, and the Triwizard Cup, before heading down deep into a dungeon of sorts. It gets rather dark in here and saw a few people go out a emergency exit (which wasn't posted as one). Once at the end of the queue you decide which Dragon to take on.
Unfortunately at this point the greatness ends, and the actual ride begins.

We then spent the last half hour exploring the shops ($40 a scarf? seriously??) and got a butterbeer from the Three Broomsticks, it was frozen, but tasty, yet sickly. Not sure about it. At least I've had one :)

594.jpg

Day 2 - Mop ups

We had allocated a full day but amended this to a half day after doing nearly everything the day before. And we fancied Wet N Wild in the afternoon.

This time Studios was first for the last 2 attractions.

656.jpg

After the burdonous hour queue the day before this was first on the list, 15 mins, thanks very much Gru.
I don't have anything bad to say about this ride. Both pre shows - Yes, there are two - are well written and funny. If you're a fan of the films, then you'll really enjoy it. If you hate the films, then don't bother, it's not for you.
The actual ride itself is fun and comfortable with the onscreen action not being too much to confuse or disorientate. The ending is great.

Final ride of Studios

658.jpg

I had my plan to choose my specific music ready, but it failed, and got some generic crap on board audio. Annoyance number 1.
I didn't find the restraints at all comfortable, way too much like G-Force for me. Annoyance number 2.
The initial drop was rough, because it was so rough so nearly all i could concentrate on was the roughness, which was terrible all the way round. Annoyance number 3.
4 MCBRs. Annoyance number 4.
The final hill, if you can call it that, between the 4th MCBR and the station was the best bit of the ride. Annoyance number 5.
In my opinion, this is a shocking coaster. However, the mrs really enjoyed it, maybe because she actually had a song she wanted, maybe because she's just a bit thick. Either way, I had no intention of re-riding to confirm what I thought of it. Pile of brown stuff.

After being severely disappointed by HRRR we grabbed some tatt and went back into IOA for the final part of our adventure.

Had another go on Dr Doom, seriously amazing.

Then to another brilliantly themed area

663.jpg

I loved the first film, I remember seeing it at the cinema with my dad when i was about 12 and have always been fascinated by Dinosaurs. I knew that the area really only contained the Water ride, a kids flyer and the Discovery Center but I was excited anyway.

665.jpg

Best Tidal Wave type ride ever. Dinosaurs, Boats, Water, Panic, MAYHEM!! Really good, the few dino's dotted about kept the interest until the Raptors escaped, the lift hill was full of great theming and the T-Rex, WOW!

711.jpg

Admittedly, the ride doesn't totally soak you like other Tidal Waves, but did I care? No. Did I have a great time? Yeah. Super water ride.

I then gooned for about half an hour in the discovery center and even saw a baby raptor hatch, awwwwww.

677.jpg

Took a few pics from that area too.

684.jpg

I then attempted to get on Pteranodon Flyers, Fail. No kids to steal either. Gave it up as a loss after 10 mins, more to do!

Went back to Toon Lagoon so go on the Barges.

710.jpg

Very glad we didn't get soaked on River Adventure as Bilge Rat Barges absolutely drenched us. I've never got so wet from a water ride in my life, and it was awesome.
At least 3 separate rapids portions that I can remember with quite a few surprise squirts from the theming/people watching and a couple of waterfalls. I loved that it has a separate lift and fast paced portion of the ride too. Great fun, but protect those phones.

We were nearly done so went back to Seuss Landing to try the other attractions. The Cat in the Cat was fun as was the Trolley Train. Fun little rides suitable for all ages.

With everything done we went to Wet N Wild for the afternoon which was absolutely brilliant. A must do if you're in Orlando.

My thoughts on US/IOA.

US - Parts of the studios park are a bit meh, like the production central area, but the Simpsons part and Kidszone are brilliantly themed. The character meets are also fab. From a dark ride/experience POV there are some great attractions, with Transformers being easily the best Dark Ride I've been on. Unfortunately the Simpsons ride was shocking, and Disaster boring, but other than that they were all enjoyable. Coasterwise it's a let down, as their big coaster was poor imo, but the Mummy was excellent, Woody was alright.
IOA - The best "Theme" park I've been to by a mile. The theming in all areas of the park is top notch, we both felt immersed in each separate area and the rides/attractions are all themed perfectly. Dark Rides/Experiences were also very good, all three water rides were fab, a absolutely top of the pile shot tower and many other bits and pieces which were all enjoyable. Again, the coasters were a let down, but themed excellently. Hulk was too rough and the Dragons were too boring whilst the Wicker Hippogriff was just a standard family coaster which is presented well.

Happy to return, albeit in quite a few years time. Not somewhere I will return to for thrills though.

Overall Thoughts

An amazing adventure which I could have only dreamed of having as a honeymoon. Every park we visited had something I loved, and I wasn't dissapointed with any of them.

Funnily enough the first coaster of the trip ended up being the best, for me at least. Skyrush is without a doubt the most terrifying yet enjoyable coaster experience i've ever had. I honestly could spend a whole day riding it only stopping for toilet breaks and food, which i'd eat in the queue if possible. I must go back before it gets rough, I love it, miss it and will kiss it next time i'm there.
The same goes for the parks, Hershey took it for me. Due to the coaster line-up mainly, but the general feel of the place was warming. I'm so gutted we were only there for 4 1/2 hours.

Cedar Point wasn't a let down, but maybe I overhyped the place a bit. It has a great range of coasters but a lot of them are a bit middle of the road and the themeing is generally poor. There's no real change of areas, just changing of the rides you see. But, their top 4 coasters are fantastic. 4 rides in my top 10, we will be back here too.

Florida is a mixed bag. There's the utterly fantastic Busch Gardens, which is my second fave park overall. Everything about this place screams theme park, seperate areas housing coasters suited, or at least themed to the areas with a couple of worldies in Montu and Kumba. Such a great park. Another one which will get a return visit.

US and IOA I feel are more of a family park. The thrills are missing from extensive and mindblowing theming. Worth going to but not on a regular basis. Will only return when the boy is old enough.

Then there's Seaworld, totally different to any other park, but has the machines to excite as well as family viewing and interaction with the sea creatures. This is another family park for me, even though Kraken and Manta are great coasters, it's not somewhere I would go back without the family.

Finally Fun Spot. White Lightning, that's all. Get there for this coaster, it's utterly brilliant. The rest of the park is meh, but the woodie, out of this world.

USA Trip Top 10 Coasters
1: Skyrush
2: Millennium Force
3: Maverick
4: Storm Runner
5: Kumba
6: Montu
7: White Lightning
8: TTD
9: Gatekeeper
10: ShieKra

Thanks all for reading this very long report, and for your comments. It's been great writing this and serves of as a reminder of the fantastic time we had.

It's been great going on the trip with you mate. I've been a bit "50/50" about IoA, because the rides look a bit lame (except for HP). I do love some great theming though.

As an overall park it's great, and it has a really good selection of different ride types. I think it's missing something though, probably an Intamin in the JP area, a Megalite themed to Raptors or something(or whatever replaces JP, won't be there forever as it was the most dead area of the park). Only reason being that their "big" rides cater to the family GP market, there really is nothing forceful there imo. One top quality addition could make it the perfect park.

Great report! I'm now really looking forward to my trip to Tampa/Orlando in April!
Thanks Rick! I'm sure you'll have a great time, make sure you get to fun spot for WL. Time may degrade the ride, but right now it's fantastic.

I expect While Lightning to be one of the highlights of my trip! I am a GCI fanboy, after all. I was also recently wondering if Fun Spot has the funds to maintain a woodie properly. But, by the time I get there it will only be a year old, so I'm not too worried.
