Universal UK theme park in Bedford

I’m thinking it’s a top hat and (separately) a spike… there seems to be some parallel track on the straight so perhaps it’s a ‘duelling’ thing… one goes around the top hat whilst the other stalls on the spike.

Themed to ‘The Fast and the Furious’, probably. Localised to ‘The Nippy and the Passive Aggressive’.

If it were a top hat rather that a spike the train would enter the station the wrong way round each trip. Definitely 2 spikes.

Reckon @Nicky Borrill called it right with the BTTF theme too. Sure looks like the square and iconic clock tower out front

My read of that layout is it launches out the building over the airtime hill past the first switch track and up the first enormous spike.

Drops back down backwards and through the now switched switch track up around the big over bank.

It then passes a 2nd switch tracks and up the smaller spike, before dropping back down, now forward again and passing through the now 2nd switched track and through the pretzel knot inversions, barrel roll and the brakes
This is exactly how I read it too… like toutatis/pantheon but with two switch tracks rather than one, hence two spikes!

Yep, I see it now. :)

Red is the first launch, through the first switch trick on config 1, and up the first spike...

Purple is the fall down the first spike, through the first switch track on config 2, through the inverted top hat or stall, whichever it'll be, through the second switch track on config 1 and up the second spike.

Yellow is back down the second spike, through the second switch trackon config 2, completing a couple of inversions and the rest of the circuit, before entering the building again.

Yes I could have picked a better colour than purple for the second phase... I didn't... Sue me!

I think the spike will be a duelling element, 2 trains going up the 2 spikes at the same time, hence turning the small spike to do a high 5 with the big spike. :) (Scratch this, bit ambitious, transfer tracks have gotten good, but not THAT good.)

You'd need some world record dispatch times for that to work too 🙂

And yes purple was an awful choice. The court summons will be through soon.

So excited today is literally Christmas morning for UK enthusiasts!

Other than the obvious crazy coaster on the left some other notes from the concept art which are very interesting!!

I love how the hotel is the left hand side of the “main street”. Great design idea and the rooms will have some amazing park views.

In the Jurassic World area looks to be 2 Dr Doom style towers on the left and that show building is huge, surely that would be the Jurassic World Adventure dark ride from Beijing!

The green coaster looks like it could be a B&M hyper in a similar style to Hollywood Dream the ride.

This building is interesting, Lord of the Rings area and dark ride maybe?

So happy it’s officially announced, let’s just hope for a smooth planning and construction process now.

It's difficult to tell what the themes are. Doesn't look like there is any Harry Potter/Nintendo? Fine by me I can't face another hogsmede!

I heard rumours about the announcement coming this week a couple of days ago, but considering the sudden economic changes I wasn't expecting them to go through with it. Oh how they proved me wrong.

I am curious tho how much of this concept-art is already set in stone, or if we will see a lot of changes coming before the official permit applications.

Been at site this morning (look it's only a 5 minute drive) and some universal execs are on site

BBC Breakfast have a reporter at the site this morning, looks like plenty of interviews happening there.

I also picked up from the clip of the Universal exec showing the plan to Keir Starmer, he confirmed 4 lands in the park.

Jurassic Park/World seems pretty much confirmed, along with Minions land. The others don't seem so clear? Where has the Back to the Future rumour come from?

I'd be surprised if one wasn't Harry Potter, unless they think the franchise has finally passed its prime? I don't think it has, it's too precious to Millenials, precisely the age group now raising kids. I actually wonder if the show on the top right is something to do with the Tri-Wizard Cup?

Back to the Future is an interesting choice if true, but perhaps not so unsurprising? Something to tickle the nostalgia bones, the films get lots of streams and the stage show remains very popular on the west end.

Anyway, that's my bet, Harry Potter, Tri-Wizard Cup.

I just see that clip where he says 4 lands to Kier Starmer, very interesting as first i’ve seen that confirmed.

BTTF is rumoured due to the square in front of the coaster looking like Hill Valley with the clock tower.

So I think it will be:
Jurassic World
Minions
BTTF

Wonder what the 4th land could be, it’s all very exciting!

Would Warner Bros give Universal the rights to Harry Potter for the UK park though? As it would take away business and £££ from the studio tour an hour down the road...

I think Universal have also previously stated that they don't want to duplicate anything from the Florida resort.

I don't think it would, they do two different things. Like the Photo Exhibition in central London, that never impacted the Studio Tour. People will do both.
Having the theme park just up the road would probably be beneficial to the Studio Tour as people from the rest of Europe can potentially do a Potter Weekend, and there's enough of a Potterhead audience to make that commercially attractive.

Tl;dr: The studio is about seeing the film memorabilia and seeing the sets. The park is about immersing yourself in the world. Different things, people will happily do both.

Don't worry, within 24 hours, ThemeParkStop will have a video out detailing every single ride and area...

Studio tours and parks can and do co-exist... Given how many tourists come to the UK for Potter still, it's omission seems odd. However, I'm not convinced that big show building out on the right isn't going to be it. They've kept it very blank in the concept for good reason, so as not to give something away.

Multi-billion-pound investment secured as Universal theme park and resort set to be built in Bedford, bringing thousands of jobs
A multi-billion-pound investment in a major new Universal theme park and resort in Bedford has been agreed between Universal, the government and the local council, in a move that represents a major vote of confidence in the UK economy and the future of partnerships between the UK and the US.
From: Prime Minister's Office, 10 Downing Street, HM Treasury, Department for Business and Trade, Department for Culture, Media and Sport and The Rt Hon Sir Keir Starmer KCB KC MP

• The Prime Minister has today closed the deal on a new Universal theme park in Bedfordshire
• Plans will bring an estimated £50bn boost for the economy and create around 28,000 jobs in total across creative, hospitality and construction industries
• Set to open in 2031, the theme park will form part of a new planned entertainment resort, due to include immersive storytelling, rides, attractions and hospitality
• Deal firmly puts the UK on the global investment stage, delivering on the government’s Plan for Change, which will create growth and opportunities across the country

A multi-billion-pound investment in a major new Universal theme park and resort in Bedford has been agreed between Universal, the government and the local council, in a move that represents a major vote of confidence in the UK economy and the future of partnerships between the UK and the US.

The theme park, which is set to be one of the largest and most advanced in Europe, will bring nearly 20,000 jobs during the construction period, with a further 8,000 new jobs across the hospitality and creative industries when it opens in 2031.

Supporting the government’s Plan for Change to create economic growth and opportunities by getting people into well-paid, decent jobs across the creative, technology, tourism and hospitality sectors, Universal has committed to working with local colleges and universities to train the next generation of its hospitality workforce, including through a range of apprenticeships and internships.

As well as generating significant opportunities, the new theme park and resort will bring significant local benefits – with approximately 80% of employees at the theme park expected to come from local areas – and support a stream of ongoing work to unleash the potential of the Oxford-Cambridge corridor through growth, infrastructure revitalisation and further job opportunities.

Universal expects the site to generate nearly £50 billion for the economy by 2055, with 8.5 million visitors expected in its first year – becoming the largest visitor attraction in the UK. This will support the government to deliver its growth mission – creating higher living standards and putting more money in people’s pockets.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer said:
“Today we closed the deal on a multi-billion-pound investment that will see Bedford home to one of the biggest entertainment parks in Europe, firmly putting the county on the global stage.
This is our Plan for Change in action, combining local and national growth with creating around 28,000 new jobs across sectors such as construction, AI, and tourism.
It is not just about numbers; it’s about securing real opportunities for people in our country. Together, we are building a brighter future for the UK, getting people into work and ensuring our economy remains strong and competitive.”

The development, working with Bedford Borough Council, will be the first Universal-branded theme park and resort destination in Europe and will be part of a larger 476-acre entertainment resort complex.

Proposed plans from Universal Destinations & Experiences, a business unit of Comcast, include a world-class theme park with several themed lands featuring Universal’s distinct brand of immersive storytelling, thrilling rides, innovative attractions and exciting entertainment, all utilising sophisticated and advanced technology. Initial resort plans also feature a 500-room hotel and a retail, dining and entertainment complex.

Mike Cavanagh, President of Comcast Corporation, said:
“We could not be more excited to take this very important step in our plan to create and deliver an incredible Universal theme park and resort in the heart of the United Kingdom, which complements our growing US-based parks business by expanding our global footprint to Europe. We appreciate the leadership and support of Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Chancellor Rachel Reeves, Minister for Investment Poppy Gustafsson, Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy and their teams, as we work together to create and deliver a fantastic new landmark destination.”

Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves said:

“At a time of global change, this investment is a vote of confidence in Britain as a place to do business. Universal’s investment will bring billions to the economy and create thousands of jobs to the UK, putting more money in people’s pockets.”

Mark Woodbury, Chairman and CEO of Universal Destinations & Experiences, said:
“Bringing a world-class theme park and resort to the United Kingdom is a tremendous opportunity and is part of our strategy to introduce the Universal brand and experiences to new audiences around the globe. We appreciate the incredible support for our proposed project and look forward to bringing it to life in the years ahead.”

As part of the Plan for Change, the government will commit to a major investment in infrastructure around the site to support the delivery of the project and ensure it is well connected and easily accessible. It comes just days after the government signed-off the expansion of Luton Airport, showcasing how the government’s pro-growth agenda is delivering real-life benefits for working people.

The deal supports the UK’s world leading creative industries, a growth-driving sector identified in the government’s modern Industrial Strategy, which will be published this spring. The Strategy will drive investment into high growth sectors, unlocking jobs and growth right across the country.

Universal Destinations & Experiences has a proven track record of building and operating major theme parks and resorts across the globe. A Universal development in the UK will join the company’s existing portfolio of destinations across the United States and Asia-Pacific.

The proposals remain subject to a planning decision from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government.

Additional details on the project:
• Please contact Universal Destinations & Experiences for artist impression and drone footage of the site: uprcorpcomm@uniparks.com
• Further details on Government plans for infrastructure investment around the site will be set out in due course.
• The theme park resort will be built on the former Kempston Hardwick brickworks. More information on the project can be found at universalukproject.co.uk.
• The theme park and resort is subject to planning permission, which will be considered at a later date.

So the government are footing the bill for the infrastructure improvements in the area? If that's as it reads, then a bit of shrewd negotiating from Comcast, I expected them to be paying for much of that.

I guess it helps the government that Universal have chosen a site with existing railways and a station which was being extended anyway and I'm sure the Luton airport expansion was also happening regardless if the park was going ahead.

So the government can dress it up that these are for Universal but in reality these projects were already happening. However all the roads, additional station platforms etc the government will have to definately be putting in extra investment for these.

Seems a fair trade off, you build the infrastructure and we will build a world class theme park and generate billions to your economy and add thousands of jobs.

I was hoping to see Universal put some money into East West Rail, to be honest, but the project is happening regardless. I guess Universal only need a bigger EWR station and an expanded Wixams, plus the slips form the 421.
