It is bugging me now, a lot, and I do mean a lot of people spell Stanstead, where as its known more nowerdays as Stansted. So what way do you think is the right way? Stanstead or Stansted?

It bugs me more that people can't spell "nowadays."

I've never given it any thought tbh.

Well if it was spelt Stanstead, then I would pronounce it 'Stan-steed' which is incorrect. Afterall, Heathrow is commonly pronounced 'Hee-throw' and therefore to keep consistancy with the "London" airports, Stanstead, which also has an 'ea' sound would have to be pronounced the incorrect way.

An exception to this would be my good home town of Reading which should actually be spelt Redding but some idiot made a typo and put an 'a' there instead of a 'd.'

So after that pointless analysis, Stansted appears to be the correct spelling. (It's what it appears as on Google Maps.)

where as its known more nowerdays as Stansted.

If we're correcting Mushroom's errors I think we should also point out that an apostrophe is needed in to make it 'it's.'

<img> crap airport does it matter lol.

Its not about airport codes lol. The amount I have seen it spelled Stanstead, like here and on TV is annoying. I am just trying to find out what CF thinks is the right way of spelling.

As a Steadman (pronounced Sted), and knowing Mr Clam (Surname Stead - pronounced Sted) I can categorically pronounce you wrong :)

Likewise if you were to "stand someone in good stead", or if you were "steadfast in your resolve" it's pronounced steed (you'd be wrong).

Etymology wise it's a Saxon based word. During the standardisation of English the a was kept in stead (instead? insteed? :p ). However, the name Stead had already been changed by people to be Sted/Stedman. It's a simple change in spelling.

The chances are Stansted stands on lands owned by the Sted family (they were certainly based in that area) - hence the name. While the root of Sted and Stead are the same - it is of course incorrect to use Stanstead if the airport call themselves Stansted.

Here endeth today's history lesson! :)

We did, he was crap in bed. He spent three hours in the bathroom talking about the toilet then just wanted to shag. No pillow talk about the origins of feather pillows, duck down, or carpet.

I felt so used... ;)

Stansted.

Just because in Norwegian, "sted" is the word for "place"

So, "Stan's Place" (or "the place of Stan" would be a little better).
