Terrain Coasters

I love terrain coasters

Boulderdash is great. I've done it 100+ times seeing as its about 20 minutes away.

BOSS looks AMAZING, and Dragon Mountain looks great too.

I've never been to Lightwater Valley, but i have seen the POV's of Ultimate. and that looks like a TRUE terrain coaster.

What would you say the best terrain coasters are? and what are your thoughts on Ultimate?

Boulderdash often gets the highest reviews. Another legendary terrain coaster is the Beast.

GCI and GG have built some great roller coasters that feature good terrain features, such as Prowler, the turnaround portion of Voyage, and the bowl portion of Ravine Flyer II.

Nemesis!! The ultimate use of terrain!!

But RF2 is up there too. I bet Dash will get the vote though as it looks epic.

^I disagree about Nemesis; it doesn't use natural terrain. It's basically a coaster in a manufactured hole. What it does, it does very well, but it's not a terrain coaster. That's almost like calling Crystal Wings a terrain coaster.

For me, it's a toss up between Boulder Dash and Eagle's Fortress.

Boulder Dash is the better coaster (not my a huge margin though), but if we're looking at the way they use the terrain, then it's really hard to call.

What I love about both of them is that you really don't know what's coming up. That's especially true of Eagle's Fortress, where you can see basically nothing of the layout before you ride, and only very short sections of track in front of you as you're riding, thanks to all the trees around the track.

Another notable coaster is Beast at King's Island. Not a geat coaster, but uses its setting brilliantly.

yeah alot of those Suspended rides work with terrain really well.
The beast is a really long ride lol. but i find that GG and GCI almost never cease to fail when it comes to working with what they are given. you cant just set their rides up in a parkinglot like you can with many other companies such as Dinn.

^but we're talking about terrain coasters, not parking lot coasters.

I'm glad they don't just stick their rides up on slabs of concrete.

^I've always felt that any ride regardless of wood or steel would work best terrain. You get a much better sense of speed as well in the woods.

^ I think that was sarcasm.

Thunderbolt is tough to classify as a terrain coaster. The only thing it does is drop into a valley.

haha i can never tell sarcasm apart from anything else...
I remember watching all sorts of TV Programs a few years back raving about how Thunderbolt is the worlds #1 wooden rollercoaster and how its a great terrain coaster ect. ect.

i find it very overrated.

Prowler, Voyage, Raven, and Ninja at SFMM. Prowler is my number two, Voyage is my number one, Raven is top 20, and Ninja is not even close to that, but it uses the terrain perfectly. Terrain coasters are my preferred method of coasters.

My favorites are The Voyage, Ravine Flyer II, Prowler, and Thunderation. The way The Voyage hauls ass through the first half and then creeps into the mid course brakes, which are just above ground level, only to be hauling ass again through the second half is just brilliant. RFII utilizes the hillside it sits on quite nicely the way it dives down over the edge twice. Prowler, while it's not as terrain as the others, still is a low to the ground ride which gets better as the ride goes on. It gets better because of all the drop offs in the terrain at the end of the ride. Thunderation doesn't seem like it be a great ride, but the ride starts leaving the station and slowly picking up speed as it meanders down the hillside. Before you know it, you're moving at least 40 mph, whizzing around turns and over hills. The ride ends with a decent twisting drop finale as well.

Some others worth mentioning are The Beast, Flight Deck(KI), Apollo's Chariot, Muntanya Russa, Alpengeist, Phantom's Revenge, Wildfire, Powder Keg, and Adventure Express(KI).

I think Boulder Dash must be the undisputed king of terrain coasters. There are double downs/ups and others parts of it that were clearly only made because there was something in the way. The whole coaster (for the first half at least) cannot be more than 25ft off the ground. I know the second half is slightly more 'man-made' but the first half especially is without question the best terrain hugging coaster I've done.

Voyage was alright for utilising terrain, but didn't really feel that terrain hugging. Most of the 'big' coasters at Silver Dollar City did a good job of using the terrain. Wildfire, Thunderation and Powder Keg all used the hillside setting to their advantage.

Yeah, Thunderbolt is not a terrain coaster and is far from being the #1 wooden coaster. Ravine Flyer II is 2 and a half hours away, and is a much better terrain/overall wooden coaster.

Anyways, everyone knows the real roller coaster at Kennywood is Exterminator.

Best one I have been on is Lisebergbanan.

I would also called The Revolution at SFMM and terrain coaster.

Boulder Dash.

Beast didn't do nearly enough to come close to Dash or really just be amazing at all. It just kinda goes around and around... and it's only good at night because it's surrounded by trees and darkness. The ride itself pretty much sucks.

Gold Rusher is another epic terrain coaster.

I'd just like to point out that while I realize that this thread is over a year old, I felt that making a new thread would just get me in trouble. Anyway, I was doing some research and I came across this epic looking terrain coaster. Titled "Wood Coaster" (or 木质过山车 to be technical), this coaster looks like it packs a heck of a punch and deserves to be up there with other terrain coaster greats. Check out the POV to get a better idea of its intensity and awesomeness.

Wait, you haven't heard of this? Well, from the beginning it has looked awesome. It's original name was Mountain Flyer, but I don't know why they did that. For anyone who has been on this, how are the laterals on it? Are they nearly as awesome as Boulder Dash's?
