"Mummy, when I grow up I want to be a roller coaster tester."
"Don't be silly son, that will never happen."

Dunno how genuine this job is or whether it's more of a publicity thing...

Wanted: a person with the ultimate head for heights, a strong stomach and a need for speed who can cope with a whole career's-worth of twists and turns in just one morning...

Alton Towers has launched a search for an official Rollercoaster Tester.

The job will entail riding each of the theme park’s biggest rollercoasters before they open to the public.

The lucky candidate will have to endure G-forces which would challenge an astronaut, speeds of 0-60 in just two seconds, a 60-metre drop and be able to handle the first 14-loop rollercoaster, The Smiler, before most people’s days have even started.

The job might sound like a dream come true for some, but it does come with a few downsides:

a) You will need to be on site for 8am daily until the end of September

b) You won’t be paid

c) There won’t be any travel expenses

d) Food is not provided either

On the upside, you’ll be free to go on as many rides as you like all day thanks to your free annual pass.

To enter, participants must visit the Alton Towers Resort website and submit a video describing why you should be the park’s rollercoaster tester, along with what your favourite ride is and why. A panel of rollercoaster experts will judge the entries and decide who wins.

Surely this is the dream job for some members??

EDIT: Just noticed the 'you won't be paid' and on 'site daily until September' bit, seems a bit crap actually...

For a job, bad deal.

For a hobby, everyone here can agree it'll be great.

But I'd assume riding the same coasters every day for the next 4 months would get a bit repetitive?

Because everyone knows amusement parks use daily news sites as job postings.

It's a publicity stunt. Nothing more, nothing less, and something ride ops are paid every morning to do.

Like Hyde said, its merely a publicity stunt. If they want an 'official rollercoaster tester' I hope they at least avoid picking a member of the gp who thinks Rita's speed is "like 100mph" or calls all of The Smiler's inversions "loop de loops".

I couldn't have said it better myself.

Hahaa it's so not a job, considering you're not being paid for it. This is pretty much the most stupid thing ever. Pretty poor publicity stunt if you ask me :p .

Anyone that applies for this really needs to reevaluate their life choices.

This.

I've had several people send this to me on Facebook and twitter and I'm just like go away. Great PR stunt to get kids/young teens dribbling with excitement at being 'important', but it's tedious realistically.

There was a LADbible story about this with a GP poll on Alton's best coaster- here are the interesting results:

^Apart from Oblivion being so high this doesn't really surprise me. The GP will say the Smiler because it goes upside down 14 times and therefore it is clearly the best...

Air I'm surprised has such a high vote share, I know I love it but I appreciate I'm on my own on that front. 7% each for Rita and Thirteen, yeah I can imagine some people like to be wrong about their lives so that'd be the case.

Oblivion is still intimidating so a lot of people will vote it for that.

Smiler is actually a good ride and also has the record breaker factor.

Air being so high is no surprise, it's as loved by the GP as it's loathed by enthusiasts.

Smiler is obviously the best - it's got 14 hoops.

If one more basic GP friend posts this on my wall or sends it to me in a message, I'm going to die.
