A dozen people were stuck for more than two hours after a roller coaster at Universal Studios Florida came to a stop 150ft (45m) above the ground.

The Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit ride stopped at around 7pm because of a technical glitch that caused computers to go into safety mode, officials said.

Several trains were on the track when the ride stopped, and park workers were able to help those passengers off almost immediately.

However, the final 12-person train was stuck in a vertical position, more than 150ft above the ground.

The riders were rescued two and a half hours later.

The reason the rescue took so long is because park officials wanted to do it safely, Universal spokesman Tom Schroder said.

"We spent a lot of that time talking to the passengers and trying to make them as comfortable as we could," Mr Schroder said.

No serious injuries were reported, but one woman complained of neck pain and went to the hospital as a precaution.

Park officials will now investigate what caused the glitch. It is not yet clear when the ride will be running again.

I'm glad to see the safety systems kicked in and there were no injuries but I'm betting they'll be at least one compo claim for emotional distress. No doubt one of the 12 people stuck was disabled or had some kind of condition where they could die at any moment etc.

Annoys me how the press seem to ignore the fact that the safety systems kicked in correctly.

^Because being stuck 150 feet up on a vertical lift hill for over 2.5 hours is something that doesn't happen every day and the Texas Giant accident has put coaster incidents in the spotlight.

All the news reports I've seen on TV state that it was the safety system that kicked in and caused the trains to stop.
For those interested - ABC World News with Diane Sawyer will be using CF video footage for tonight's report.

HRRR always makes the news due to its delay in opening then shutdown a year later. It is also a highly visable ride that can be filmed from several public streets thus making it easier to rile up the masses.

They still had news helicopters flying overhead even an hour ago when I was on my way back home from lunching on the other side of USF

Just saw the footage, gosh why don't they learn the facts on coaster safety. This time they brought in Robb but they shouldn't need an expert to know that this is a rare occurrence

Gotta have that face time, very glad that USA Today at least took my complaint about overreacting to things in the amusement industry and didn't show any articles longer than 2 paragraphs on their website today.

I agree with this. After the Texas Giant accident, I emailed several of the UK media outlets reminding them that rides are safe and all that jazz. Yeah, I know it was presumptuous but I really dislike accident sensationalism.

My mother told me this story like it was a big deal. I told her it happens all the time and was entirely a non-issue, and this surprised her somehow. It's interesting how the GP thinks every ride failure is frightening, let alone news worthy.
