"All of the roller coasters are closed." Nightmarish words for a group of enthusiasts to be confronted with at the gates of a park - and pretty much exactly what happened to the group of 10 goons who gathered at Plopsaland De Panne for a CF Live. We did our best to keep our spirits up, a lingering doubt followed us as we went to get our photo taken with the punny mascot of the trip - Maya the Bee.
The first part of the chilly day was all about dark rides, Bos Van Plop and Bumba's World Trip. There were plenty of jokes to go around ("You've been... BUMBA-STRUCK!") and we were making the best of things. We wanted our coaster fix though, Plopsaland rolled its eyes, said "ok
fine" and opened Heidi. It was a fun ride, a little bit of airtime, relatively smooth - a definite shot in the arm. Morale was up, we just had to
believe. Ride to Happiness
was going to open. While we waited, we scooped up all of those lovely +1s for people who didn't already have them. Some even rode DinoSplash, which seemed like a bad idea on such a cold day, but you don't get that wet.
The delirium began to set in, we fed the goats, some played on those spring rocker things that you get in playgrounds, falling over to the amusement of all. We raced on those slides that you ride in burlap sacks. We risked wet feet on a freezing day on this weird indoor raft thing. Things that we wouldn't have even looked at twice if Ride to Happiness was open were a source of joy and merriment. I developed a keen appreciation for the attention to detail in the park.
Time passed. Eventually it became clear that the dream was dead, Ride to Happiness would not open, all was lost.
We raged against the dying of the light, dancing, chanting the name of Plop, lapping Heidi, mourning what could have been...
I think this trip proves that with the right people, you can compensate for one of the best rides in the world not being open. I had a wonderful time! Many thanks to
@Serena for organising and to
@Slamming Coastercore for giving me a lift there and back again. Looking forward to the next one!
