After traveling for much of the day yesterday down to sunny Hampshire then being forced to spend hours and hours socialising with family for my Dad's 65th birthday I was looking forward to a welcome release of cheap thrills and spills.
After scanning RollerCoaster DataBase for nearby amusement parks I settled on the three-cred Hayling Island Funland!
I woke up with high expectations this morning in the village of Four Marks where I am staying with my Aunt Janet. I gorged myself on porridge with banana for breakfast.
It took me a little while to persuade my Dad to take me down to the Funland and he finally gave in to shut me up. Today the weather has been awful. Rain, cold and winds, but I donned my usual flowery summery shorts (just ask ATTACKHAMMER) then we were off!
After driving for a good half hour we arrived at a run down, empty, dirty mess of hell and turd. Nothing looked open and I was suddenly thinking to myself 'I don't remember checking if it is still in operation'. We parked the car and I noticed 'Klondike Gold Mine', the coaster I had been most looking forward to. It did look past operational to be honest so I was now getting scared that I had dragged the family down here for nothing.
Dad, Auntie Janet and the sister went into a café while I went to see if it was open. It wasn't...but it did open at 11:00. I was half relieved and half annoyed (it had only just gone 10:00). I was also told that due to the bad weather it's possible that not every ride and attraction will be open.
At 11:00 I wandered back to the Funland after wasting time in the amusements. I went to the ticket/token booth and asked for a wrist band. £10 for unlimited cheap thrills! I asked the member of staff if the coasters would be open today, she said, 'as far as I know', so I bought the wristband. As I was about to leave she added 'the big coaster (i.e. Klondike, the one I REALLY wanted to go on) wont operate with just one person. I was not happy that she omitted to say this until after I had bought the wristband >.<
I headed towards Klondike which had locked front doors so I went to the next door Woody's Children's Rollercoaster. It was actually quite good. There was no chain lift hill only worn out tyres to lift me to the top. I was the only one on the train so I sat at the front and went round 3 times. It was rather loud and clunky which was sad.
After that I tried Klondike. A ride op indeed said 'you need someone else'. I was not happy (I asked my sister, she refused profusely, I even offered to pay for her!). I thought I should walk to the other side of the park and try the Super Dragon. No ride op in site, just three operating a log flume (THREE?!?! To operate a log flume which clearly no one else was going to ride on a day like today). Finally one of them slowly (and ungracefully) wandered towards me. She was cheerful enough and I took my place at the front of the train. I have to be honest, I really enjoyed it, it was fast in places, almost like an Intamin Accelerator! It was very uncomfortable and the lap bar was not in place, it just wasn't, but I enjoyed the thrill immensely.
Once done I wandered back to Klondike for one last chance. There was still no one else, that was that, and I slowly walked back to the café. It was then when someone called to me, it was a ride op offering to go on with me! I was jumping with joy (it must be my inner Goon). I want you to imagine the shoulder bar of Slammer now. Imagine them black and with bits of gaffa tape hanging off, there was no lap bar some felt less than not safe (and this had a loop). As I was heading up the lift hill it broke. It was raining and I had to sit there freezing cold for five minutes before it finally clunked back into life. Up to the top I went, I won't lie, I was slightly scared, it simply didn't seem safe. Down a steep slope (as steep and I swear as fast as Oblivion) and straight through a tunnel too close to the track, at an angle and at a hell of a speed, straight up a slight hill before being thrown back down a slope and into the loop. The loop was horrifically awesome. It was very tight so the Gs were good. I felt myself being pushed deeply into the seat due to the speed I was doing. It was back into another tunnel, barreling through like no tomorrow and then finish.
Despite my apparent moaning I did really enjoy Klondike Gold Mine, my fav of the day, I think that is because I really enjoyed being actually scared rather than the usual thrill of coasters. No one would ride with me again so it was time to leave.
I had a good time, I didn't do any of the other attractions which I suppose I do regret, oh well, thank you Hayling Funland.
Thank you goons for reading.
