GigaPan Pictures - IoA etc

Not quite sure where this topic belongs.... kinda here, kinda elsewhere...but whilst surfing around today came across this "Gigapan" photo technique where basically thousands of photos are stiched together to make a huge panaorama. Which all makes for a rather cool effct where you can zoom right in on these huge pictures;

Islands of Adventure;

(You can see how the technique is working on the Hulk in that shot)

cool)

Funnily enough I was just reading about Gigapan! Looks like a cool technique, shame it dosen't work to well with massive SLR's :p

^ probably surfed there from the same BBC link I hit upon!

The little robot you can use to control your camera retails for $400-$450, which didn't strike me as stupid expensive....

When I was at Bryce Canyon last year I saw a guy setting up a (film) panoramic camera and that was quite cool... but stiching together a thousand-odd digital images is just mind boggling!

It works well for landscapes and stuff, not so good for crowd shots as the stitching causes loads of problems methinks!

It does as peoples faces go a bit funny! Did you see the Large Format Camera they spotted in the Obama crowd?

I love the look of film panoramic cameras. I saw one on eBay for about £3k which is a bargain. (i think)

See i'd suck also at stitching up, I can't even do the panoramic mode on my phone XD

I love how clear the picture is, no matter how far zoomed in. It would be awesome to see more of these! :)

^^That is the problem with these types of things. You can't take photos of things that are moving!

But that is incredible, so clear.

Really nice picture, but they should have waited until the Potter area and HRRR were completed.

That's really amazing, it's so clear! You can see individual people on the Hulk and Dr. Doom!

They're quite cool actually. I really like the way you can keep the detail even when you zoom right in.

I took a few photos similar to this whilst I was in France. They're not made up of thousands of photos, but they're a similar effect:

Amiens Cathedral:

Parc Asterix:

They do take a fair amount of time to load. They were taken with nine and twelve pictures respectively. I know they're not as good as the real GigaPan shots, but I didn't have a clever little tripod or device, they're hand-held. I used a D-SLR, but I'm sure you could do something similar with a compact.

LOL at the Dr. Seuss Train that is cut off. I guess things like that can't be helped when making photos like this. Pretty amazing stuff though.

I didn't notice him since it was so dark down there. His head is partially washed away, as are his legs. :lol:
