Everyone with a brain-cell will know about the Earthquake in Haiti and the requests for donations being shown everywhere.

My question is, do you donate (money or otherwise) to disaster funds? I ask this specifically about disaster funds, as charity donations during 'non-disaster' times are a different issue.

I never donate to foreign charities when there isn't a major disaster. I'm of the opinion that charity starts at home and there are many, perfectly deserving charities, in the UK that would receive my donations from sponsorship, charity events in school etc. However, in times of need like this, I (well, we strictly do it as a family donation) always donate.

Think about it, if everyone in the UK gave only £1, we'd be able to give over £60million. £1 is nothing to each person, and I know people could give more, and imagine if the same happened in the US, Canada, France, Germany... need I go on?

So, do you donate to disaster funds?

Next time I can spare a few dollars I plan on it. Right now, I'm on the path to being homeless and starving..

Generally, I try to stick to a set number of charities to donate to. It just gets weird of hand otherwise. It's been shown, for example, that Comic Relief and Children in Need don't make people donate any more money than they normally would. It's just that they are donating to a different cause than they otherwise might.

However, when a situation such as this earthquake, or the Boxing Day Tsunami occur, my outlook changes, because of the urgency of it. I don't personally donate just money, but I often take part in fundraising activities for the cause.

I can't afford to but do when I can.
Although this is a good idea:

I do not as the government does therefore I do that way.

I give money to cancer research and the local children's care unit via things at work.

Ahahaha! Ben hadn't a clue about it until Taylor told him - now THAT'S a fail!

On a serious note, this is horrid - and when I'm next in town I will donate to a charity, like **** am I giving money straight to the government!

The problem with charity donations is the money never goes to those who need it most. And in Haiti's case people 2 minutes away from the airport aren't even getting aid supplies.

In Port-au-Prince the only feasible option is to bulldoze the entire city and start again. Repair work won't be earthquake proof, and anything further tremors in the future will just cause ruin and chaos again.

No, because I'm selfish. I know it's a major disaster but as Marc posted, our Government will be giving them a large sum of our cash anyways.

All my money is for my use only. If I work to get it, its mine. Its a bad situation they are in yes, but it don't effect me so I don't need to care. £1 is most of a bus fair to the school. That is more important.

The only ones I would concider is Cancer ones. As that may effect people I care about.

Im still pissed at our goverment for wasting money on other countrys before their own. That money could of gone to a few snowplows, thus the schools being open, and me being about to start my college work sooner. Simple example. Yes, harsh, but there are priorities.

I love that we're massively in debt and people are whining, but then they're shouting for the government to send more money.

Sorry,but no.

I'm struggling enough this month to pay the gas bill, electricity bill, phone bill, mortgage etc etc.

I could do with a few donations going my way,I need every penny I can get.

I've not given to Haiti yet, which is surprising because I usually do, I just have been short on cash recently because of not working for two weeks. But if I'm ever asked to donate a buck or two, obviously I would, but I usually donate to Sick Kids or cancer research/Brain Tumour Foundation more often than for disasters.

The thing is with charitys... they 'advertise' their donation amounts in a way that seems feasible, but if you can't afford it you can't afford it its as simple as that.

You're saying this donation is only a pound, then theres others which are 50p a week, £1 a month blah blah blah... if you did it to a few charities theres a fair chunk of your wage going out the bank.

I'm only like this because I fell for it on personal things "buy this for only £XX a month, get our top package for only £XX a month" and at the time you think yeah I can manage that, then you realise when your bills come its a huge amount.

Thats why I'm counting down the days to October 2011.

The only charity I'd ever give to is Help for Heroes.
