Disney's Hollywood Studios - New Jack Sparrow Attraction

I knew you were going to bring that up ;)

I'm in no way suggesting the PotC film was successful because of the ride, merely that a lot of initial interest for the film existed because of it. Same goes for Haunted Mansion ;)

Of course, Haunted Mansion died and we'll try our best to forget about it, but it initially did Ok at the cinemas, and of course there's no way to prove it but if the Haunted Mansion didn't already exist as a brand as a ride in Disneyland it probably would have done abysmally in the cinemas because it was merely a stand alone **** family film, as opposed to doing fairly alright as a **** family film that shares it's name with an attraction at Disneyland ;)

Haunted Mansion did poorly compared to the immediate "typical Murphy" films both before and after Haunted Mansion (Daddy Day Care and Norbit) - though neither did spectacularly. It does suggest that the interest due to it being a Disney franchise didn't help. Probably having Eddie Murphy helped get people to see it rather than the other way around (without him, interest would have been as good as zero).

So ner :P

Lol, we'll agree to disagree then. I think your lack of Disney knowledge/enthusiasm is going to make it hard to convince you otherwise, and it's hard to argue whilst sitting in an airport writing this via Tapatalk! I shall consider continuing hijacking this topic with this discussion when I get back from Port Aventura ;)

And maybe your fanism is making you see things that aren't there? Lacking Disney knowledge/enthusiasm puts me in the majority which only strengthens my case ;)

Fixed in the most "you are an arse Furie" way I know :P

Another problem for the Haunted Mansion film was that Casper and The Addams Family had done similar things to much acclaim just a few years earlier. It arrived at the end of a cycle, rather than starting something new like POTC did. Had Disney waited (and cast a different lead*) it might have been more successful.

*how about Steve Guttenberg, star of Tower of Terror?! ;)

But, in talks about the Haunted Manaion movie, it didnt work, Disney knew that, hence the remake with director of Guillermo Del Toro & the story of the Hatbox Ghost.

Yeah, sorry Jordan, but to suggest that a ride in a theme park is pretty much 100% responsible for the knowledge and popularity of an entire genre is pretty ludicrous.

You've grown up with POTC the ride, so it's understandable that the genre, for you, is intrinsically linked to it. For most people, that simply isn't the case.

If you wanted to find a single idea that has popularised pirates, not that I really think it's down to one thing, it's certainly not a ride at a theme park; it's Robert Louis Stevenson with Treasure Island.

Then you've got the old Hollywood swashbucklers, which, granted, may not have a much of a modern audience, but their effect on the whole pirate aesthetic, what we conjure up in our heads when we think of pirates, predates Disney by decades.

Not to mention novels by Daphne DuMaurier, and the films based off those , and Peter Pan.

As for the POTC film, the ride would have had little to zero effect on its popularity. They were huge budget films, with massive names behind them and ludicrous amounts of money spent on mass marketing.

The 1st I knew of Potc was when I went to Orlando when I was 22.

But I knew of Long John Silver, Black Beard and others. Plus saw many pirate films when growing up.

I think Potc bought back interest to pirates though. As said though I find the ride dull and it was dated until the put the film characters in the ride. It now gives me something to look for :)

I still don't see the amusment out of this attraction. Yes, jack sparrow did make me laugh but as a whole I found the attraction a bit underwhelming. Dosen't have a re-ridable factor which is part of the reason why guest don't spend as much time in the studios as they do in the others. The only rides I would bother visit this disney park for is Rock n Roller coaster and Tower of Terror. Toy Story always has a long queue and Star Tours is fun but doesn't help when you've ridden forbidden journey the day before.

Jack Sparrow will be around for a long time, I love him, the people love him. However how long will this sorta attraction last before having to change it due to popularity decline of the same expeirence? I won't say they've done a bad job but lets see it in the long run.

Still gotta be better than bloody Prince Cabin (or whatever hes called)

I've just been checking up on the ride schedules for WDW, and I noticed that on an unofficial site, this attraction is now listed as permanently closed... has to be one of the shortest lifespans for a Disney attraction?

And it was fab <3

EDIT: I've removed the multiple posts. I'll keep an eye out and try to sort out any others for you. - Hixee
