It's a natural evolution for filmmaking. It's more expensive, but it's also easier to film and takes less time. A well thought out practical effect, while I prefer them, takes a lot longer to build, prepare, and properly shoot. CGI just represents a lot more control and is ideal for a company like Marvel which is releasing 3+ movies a year.

Sadly, GCI has not had a big impact on the film industry.
 
It definitely killed 2D animation in America. Japan still uses 2D though. CGI isn't bad though, it's just become the norm.
