Camelot Theme Park Goes Into Receivership

Is anyone geeky enough to know when it closed for the season last year?

We went Halloween, and I wanna know how close to the last operating day we were xD

Ben, sorry to break this to you but I was there on the very last day of the season. :p Possibly it's last ever operating day, too.

Such a shame, Im still gutted about this news.

I know for a fact Camelot has their best visitor numbers for 6 years last season.

But after e-mailing the PR woman at Camelot who I've known for years, the overheads were just extraordinary, and if they cut back on them even more the place would be a national shambles (it was close to it already, tbh).

First Frontierland. Then Pleasureland. Now Camelot. Which Northern park will go next? It seems the power circuit of the northern parks, Pleasure Beach is draining money out of all the other local parks. Alton Towers, whilst a midlands park also has effect as most northern people would rather travel an extra hour to go to the better parks. I feel sad to see Camelot go as I have been quite a few times and always enjoyed it, particularly as a kid. But every cloud has a silver lining. It will mean better trade for Pleasure Beach as it is the last remaining 'major' park in the North West as the 300,000 people who went to Camelot will now flock to Blackpool. Pleasure Beach-1 0-Camelot. But really, yes, it is such a shame. It was a lovely little park in its heyday. And it was actually a 'theme' park with an actual 'theme' not just a seaside funfair with tacky lights and tackier rides. God bless Camelot.

I dont personally think we'll ever see Knightmare operating in the UK again, it most certainly go abroad or be scrapped. Though if I was to name one park in the UK that I believe would get it, I would have to say Lightwater V.

Whirlwind IMO would be a perfect additon to a small park like Pleasure Island or Pleasurewood Hills. It would fit perfectly in either of them. You never know, Pleasurewood snapped up the Missile when American Adventure closed...!

Camelot was the first theme park I ever went to.

Tower of Terror the first coaster I ever went on.
I believe this was circa 1990.
The beast was my fav as a wee kiddie, I know that ride was also removed in later years.

Oh well, can't say it was a great, or even good park.
I guess they had a good run.

Satan bless em.

The Beast still lives. It's in Towyn at Tir Prince. I rode it a couple of years back - it's got a real kick to it :)

It was removed after 2007 from Towyn. They replaced it with a Wacky Worm and there doesn't appear to be any further info from RCDB of where Venom(Beast) ended up.

Could also be a good replacement for Storm at New Pleasureland. Seeing as they already took Gauntlet from Camelot they might opt for another coaster from the park. Also both coasters take up nearly the same ground area and New Pleasureland really needs to have one major coaster.

Sorry, didn't know it had gone from Tir Prince. I don't keep up really with these crappy parks

Also, about Knightmare being relocated, you have to think about it from the parks point of view, is purchasing Knightmare a move forward? For about 99% of parks, no its not, it has no gimmicks, its very old, looks incredibly ugly, and pretty costly. And it didn't exactly do Camelot any favours did it? Oh apart from the CF-Live.

Whirlwind should go die...piece of <img>.
I'm inclined to agree. The layout had promise, but it was just too rough to be enjoyable. Spinning coasters are best experienced by throwing your arms up and letting them chuck you around. With Whirlwind, if you didn't hold on it just beat the crap out of you.

Unless someone gives it a major refurbishment and manages to smooth out the ride experience, no thanks.

To be honest, Knightmare suffered from the same problem, but to a lesser extent.

Taken from the Camelot website:

"Camelot Theme Park is owned and operated by Prime Resorts Limited. On 3 February 2009, Les Ross and Malcolm Shierson of Grant Thornton UK LLP were appointed as Joint Administrative Receivers to Prime Resorts Limited and Prime Resorts Holdings Limited."

and, more exciting:

"Camelot Theme Park will re-open for the new season
on Saturday April 4th 2009"

Are you sure this is the last we've seen of those pesky knights??

I highly doubt it.

Recievers and Consultants from Theme Park Planning Agencies are due on site next week to investigate the park and see how much money they could gain by selling the site's internal parts (eg Rides).

Why doesn't Merlin Entertainments just buy the place? They already own half of the tourist attractions in Europe not to mention half a dozen theme parks in the south, ala Thorpe, Chessington and Legoland. They could surely invest in the north and splash out on doing Camelot up a bit.

I think the question you need to be asking is: Why would Merlin Entertainments, a company which (on paper at least) owns some of the best theme parks in the country want to buy a dump like Camelot? It'd require far too much work and expense to renovate the place - they'd better off just investing the money in their existing attractions.
