2009 Coasterpoll Results

I'm a little surprised that EF didn't get the '*' this year, as two of the ballots it's on are blatantly fraudulent.

#354 and #364, if you want to look at those two for yourself.

Simply put, those two ballots list one steel coaster from every park listed on the ballot. No park on the ballot has two ranked coasters.

[shrug]

Oh look! Space Mountain, Paris IS a pile of **** and the lowest ranking of all the Disney Space Mountain coasters by quite a wide margin. Now, where's that DLP topic gone...

So a UK only top 10:

1. Nemesis, Alton Towers
2. Stealth, Thorpe Park
3. Speed, Oakwood
4. Oblivion, Alton Towers
5. Nemesis Inferno, Thorpe Park
6. Air, Alton Towers
7. Saw- The Ride, Thorpe Park
8. Knightmare, Camelot
9. Rita, Alton Towers
10. The Ultimate, Lightwater Valley

Air at no.6? Who the **** voted that up!?

I did :--D
It was my second favourite coaster in the UK (Behind Nemesis)...But I like flying coasters a lot, so it sat fairly highly in my list overall.

^ I think Mitch just grouped it in with most other Maurer spinners.

Well that's wrong cos it's a bloody unique layout... Same thing for Spinball...

Why does he have Crush's Coaster on there when it's the same layout as one of the basic models with a small added on section?

In a word: Theming

Dark Knight, Exterminator and Scooby (Australia) all get separate ballot lines due to theming.

If we added a line for every coaster people want added, there'd be as many lines as there are coasters. I've seen the e-mails Mitch gets, it's rediculous. As it stands, the ballot process is cumbersome due to the huge number of coasters on the ballot. You can expect to see MORE grouped rides this year, not less.

For example, all you Schwarzkopf Shuttle Loop fans, now that Turbine is gone, you can expect those to be combined.

^ That's actually pretty disturbing. I know that the two shuttle loop variants (flywheel and weighted) run very differently, I wish there was a way to split those two up.

See? Everyone wants every coaster listed separately.

The ballot has over 300 lines, and it's pretty cumbersome for most people at this point.

Concerning the Schwarzkopf Shuttles: The highest ranked this year was Montezooma at #167. Shuttle Loop at Toshimaen was #196 and Greezed Lightnin' was #212. The other three didn't even have enough riders to make the list.

The only thing lost by combining them is our collective sense of nostalgia for when these were state of the art thrill machines.

.

Plus Scooby has a whole bunch of extra track and drops, a turntable, vertical lift.

But surley XC3000s are a special case because they are all completely different layouts. It's not like two shuttle loops that might run slightly differently.

I just don't get why the Maurers get singled out...

If we are to group these, then why don't we group all the B&M sitdown loopers?

^ Go there and ride them for yourself before you start criticising it...
I'm not criticizing the ride, I'm criticizing the system.

These polls are meant to represent the opinion of the masses, and not be "Robb Alvey's Sing Along as we Count Down his Top 10!"

Why is it so absurd to let a ride stuck in the boondocks (i.e. Eagle Fortress) get its fair chance? Why shouldn't it be praised if it deserves that praise?

And I've been on Eagle Fortress and Atlantis Adventure...not as part of 'the elite' but by myself on a trip a few years ago.

They deserve that ranking, no question.
Less than 2% of the polling audience rode Eagle's Fortress over the past TWO years (Eagle's Fortress did not operate for 2009).

What's more important, letting 13 riders trump the entire poll, or letting those with lower ridership counts be heard?

I understand what you're saying 100% Hyde, but...

Those with the higher counts, and with the ability (and want to travel to grab these obscure coasters show a high sign of commitment to the hobby.

You should be able to trust the opinions of those people in both their ability to recognise a good coaster, and their reputation as a "highly travelled" enthusiast.

It's up to you how much you really trust that I guess - but if EF really, REALLY is that good - then isn't it good that it's getting exposure and will encourage more and more people to seek it out.

Look at Boulder Dash, I'd have never given a thought about to going to Lake Compounce - I'd have just never heard of the place, or Boulder Dash if an enthusiastic few didn't rank it so highly to start off with. Word gets around - it's just that fortunately, Boulder Dash is easy to get to so numbers ramp up very quickly in rider terms.

Anyway, I know what you're saying, but it all has to be a case of balance, the few and the masses... Plus, I trust Loefet's and Gavin's views. If they say it's good - then it's good...

I too think its a bit unfair to not include Dragons Fury as a seperate coaster. Especially as it used rank quite high from what I can remember. Was it not 60th, or 61st one year? (Random I know, but that just seems to ring a bell...)

I cant remember, but if it was originally on there as its own coaster, it should stay like that, surely.

^Because, over time, there just isn't room to include them all. It's not my call, it's not my poll.

But Mitch gets e-mails asking:
Why aren't all boomerangs or SLC's listed separately, too.
Why isn't the wildcat near me listed separately?
...and on and on.

They all ride differently. I've been on a couple SLC's that were great, I've even ridden a couple Zyklon loops that were pretty decent. It doesn't actually mean that they all need to be listed separately, does it?

I guess if you feel so strongly, you could make your own version of a poll. Personally, it doesn't bother me anymore, now that I understand the reasons behind his decisions.

I understand with the likes of SLC's and Boomerang's (or any common clone), as they are proper clones of each other, but a ride like Dragon's Fury is completely differen't.

Many people go on about it being one of the best coasters in the Country, and like I said, from what I remember, it used to rank relatively high, thats why I find it a bit odd.

Its a weird decision but oh well, I just hope it doesn't catch on, as soon we may find Odyssey is classed as a standard SLC, or Tatsu as a Superman clone!

No harm done, I'm not slating the poll, or the creater, I just found this decision a bit odd, thats all..

They should include the standard models like Whirlwind, but not Spinball & Dragon's Fury etc, but at the end of the day it does say "Favourite", so if your favourite ride is Dragon's Fury, put Fav XSC2000/3000 at the top. Zimples.

^It doesn't quite work like that though. The grouped coasters always rank very low. People just don't see them as a "serious" option when considering their polls. It falls into the "it's a clone, so it can't be that good" category, even though the realty is that there could be some fantastic coasters in that grouping.

I remember in one year it was actually the #2 coaster in the UK!

Anyway, there is room on the poll, Just group the Mega Lites :)
