Oakwood: Epic PTR!

Nic

Strata Poster
Last weekend, Sara and I headed over to Wales for a trip to Oakwood. We drove up on Sat 23rd, went to the park on Sun 24th, then drove back on Mon 25th.

On Saturday, I collected Sara from her parents' house, then we started our epic journey to deepest, darkest Wales. We encountered many things on the journey...

DSC03408.jpg

Really? Do I have to? Oh... ok then :)

DSC03411.jpg

Hmmmm... sexy!

Yay for us!
DSC03412.jpg

Ooooh... almost abroad!
DSC03413.jpg

On the bridge of expensiveness
DSC03423.jpg

We must be getting closer
DSC03427.jpg

Hurrah!
DSC03428.jpg

Oh wait... Wales: the ride has a big queue!
DSC03429.jpg

Definately abroad! Its all in foreign! Look - Allan's over there!
DSC03432.jpg

We eventually arrived at the campsite which was to be our home for the next 2 nights.
DSC03442.jpg

Started to pitch the tent...
DSC03444.jpg

DSC03445.jpg

Yay! Go me!
DSC03446.jpg

Once we were settled in, it was time to get a bit Ray Mears
DSC03447.jpg

We rock at burning stuff... sausages, mainly!
DSC03450.jpg

Naturally, there was also cider involved.
DSC03448.jpg

We then discovered THE nicest thing in the World!
DSC03451.jpg

Toasted Jaffa Cakes!
DSC03452.jpg

DSC03454.jpg

SUNDAY

In the morning, we decided to have another go at burning stuff, and set about trying to fire up the Trangia
DSC03459.jpg

It eventually worked (I have the burn on my thumb to prove it!)
DSC03460.jpg

It worked so well, that it ran out of fuel, and we were scared to put more in... so resorted to the gas stove
DSC03461.jpg

Despite impressions, they were (eventually) edible.
DSC03462.jpg

We then headed for the park. Crappy new entrance
DSC03463.jpg

We tried to get on the Clown coaster... but failed. BOO!!!
DSC03469.jpg

Then headed for Speed
DSC03474.jpg

I really liked it. Trouble is, they only had one train running (grrr!) so it took FOREVER to actually get on. It might be a bit rough, but it doesn't concuss you in the same way that saw does, so I found this more enjoyable.
DSC03478.jpg

We also went on megafobia. This was also on one train (GRRR!) so the queue took AAAAAGES!
DSC03471.jpg

It was well worth the wait though :)

Other highlights included the super lino slide thing
DSC03479.jpg

DSC03482.jpg

DSC03484.jpg

I rememebr going on this when I was about 9 years old. It was fab to have another go!
DSC03480.jpg

We also went on rabbit orgy: the ride :)
DSC03485.jpg

I loved it!
DSC03486.jpg

We also rode loads of other stuff... but didn't take photos.

We had the obligatory round of crazy golf. They're rather protective over their holes.
DSC03500.jpg

Final ride of the day was Hydro.
DSC03494.jpg

Being English pussies, we took the Poncho option
DSC03495.jpg

with relative levels of success
DSC03496.jpg

DSC03497.jpg

DSC03499.jpg

After Oakie we landed in this inviting looking place
DSC03503.jpg

however, it fulfilled a childhood dream of both myself and Sara... to go on The Crystal Maze! :D
DSC03505.jpg

This place is AMAZING!!!
DSC03506.jpg

It was so amazing!
DSC03507.jpg

Really really amazing!
DSC03509.jpg

We didn't do that brilliantly, but hey... it was amazing!
DSC03511.jpg

After all that amazingness... we went for a quick trip to the beach.
DSC03516.jpg

We paddled
DSC03521.jpg

DSC03526.jpg

and STEPHENed in the sand
DSC03530.jpg

Whilst at the beach, we had collected firewood :)
DSC03535.jpg

I then, obviously, set about trying to do my Ray Mears bit again.
DSC03536.jpg

If you squint really hard, it stops being half a broken cricket bat, and becomes a feather stick
DSC03539.jpg

Before setting light to things we flew my kite
DSC03540.jpg

and watched next door's doggie :)
DSC03541.jpg

Then I got back to setting light to things
DSC03547.jpg

HURRAH!
DSC03548.jpg

DSC03550.jpg

Marshmallows on a stick. Om nom nom nom!
DSC03551.jpg

We eventually decided to call it a night, so put out the fire, and crawled into the tent.

MONDAY

We packed up and started to head for home.
DSC03560.jpg

However pretty the scenery was
DSC03561.jpg

we started to get bored, so had a party
DSC03562.jpg

We then saw the signs for Barry Island, so made a bit of a detour
DSC03567.jpg

This place is magnificent
DSC03566.jpg

Of course, it has a coaster
DSC03570.jpg

Of course... the coaster was shut
DSC03571.jpg

To make up for it, we spent an hour in the arcades on the 2p machines. We won lots of tat...
DSC03574.jpg

DSC03575.jpg

We also got distracted by this woman's amazing hat
DSC03576.jpg

Before finally heading back for England...
DSC03577.jpg

Over the bridge of freeness
DSC03582.jpg

and back in our own country
DSC03587.jpg

We saw 2 amazing things on the way back. The first was this car full of GIANT animal heads
DSC03588.jpg

The second was MY BABY GRAHAM!!!!
DSC03589.jpg

This is actually my 1st car! We overtook him on the M25.
DSC03590.jpg

I squealed so loudly, Sara lost the use of her right ear. I miss him so much :(

So that was it. All in an a fantastic weekend was had by all. Yay!

Looks like you had a fun time. I used to go to Oakwood loads when I lived in Wales. CC2000 with the Crystal Maze is also amazing like you say. Shame you didn't do the Tarantula's Lair challenge where you've got to go through dark tunnels without touching the bars, put your hand in the box with the Tarantula and grab the crystal then get back. :)

Excellent trip report, Vadge! Very entertaining. I really like the photo of the seatbelt cutting between your saggy breasts.

And Crystal Maze is brilliant fun. Always a must after a Live, having 20-odd CFers running around, occasionly breaking their foot. And being a man, I insist on doing all the physical games.

No, Dave, the beach was at Broad Haven. it was the closest beach to the campsite where we stayed.

And Ian... erm, thanks, I think

Ha, that was a truly epic TR and very entertaining to read.

Excellent choice of cider, brothers for the win :D I think jaffa cakes will have to be placed over a bbq next time I'm at one.

Strawberry cider is amazing, it does get me a little bit tipsy after two bottles!

Ah fair Vadge, it was a guess of all the beaches nearby. Oh i remember Crystal Maze at the last Live at Oakwood, I think I never let anyone play a game XD

It's in a small building by a picnic area. It's on route as you walk from the Toboggan exit up to Waterfall.

Brilliant! Sorry to ask again but where is the Crystal Maze adventure area as well?

That's in a separate complex next-door to the park. Just drive out of Oakwood car park and turn right. It should then be moreorless straight after I think on your right. You can't miss it.
