Because the Grandpa in the old one is a huge part of American pop culture...

Plus it's a very British story...

Madame_Furie knew him, he lived across the road from her where she grew up and he went to her school - though he was four years older so it was just a "passing acquaintance" kind of thing. Her mum was friends with his family though.

Yeah, that's the one that I feel more sorry for their family on. He was put through hell due to the actions of one **** up, idiotic individual, that eventually, ended up his life. It's such a shame.
