Fantastic old coaster footage/pics

Now this is a cool shot. Disaster Transport originally had two robots which entertained riders in the queue - imagine the banter animatronics at a typical Disney attraction.

The robots were later removed, with the queue revised to the we all came to know.

File more under "People Mover", but a cool nostalgic look at a failed monorail project in Texas.

Which also segways to this lovely GE vision of monorails as the future of transportation. This video came out in 1967, after the opening of the monorail at Disneyland (1959), and just before WDW's opening in 1971.

Does anyone have old footage or pictures of Pontchartrain Beach in new orleans all the old people here talk about it but I have no idea what it was. I just know that it was kinda like a boardwalk type amusement park on the lakefront.

Oh yeah I know it only closed 11 years ago so it might not be that old but does anyone have pictures of six flags/jazzland when it was open? I live like right by it so I know what it looks like nowadays  but I never got to go when it was open. I always hope that it will reopen someday but then reality hits me and I realize that it won't.

@ECG Thanks that's so cool. If we still had stuff like lake Pontchartrain & six flags, I feel like everyone would be a lot happier around here. There's stuff to do, but it's more like weekly or annual events instead of things that you could go to anytime. I still love my city, we have great food, great culture, great people but i feel like katrina's effects still kind of last. You don't get the same kind of everyone knows each other feeling that you got before katrina, even though people are still nice. It had a population of about 450,000 people, and even with a big population it seemed like the whole city was one neighborhood. I honestly can't say the same after katrina.

Sorry if I got a little off topic

I've been to New Orleans many times before and after Katrina, but can't tell the differences as much as you can as a resident. Ian also loved it when I took him there a few years ago. We stopped by the former Six Flags site, but didn't get to see much as they were filming the second Planet of the Apes movie there at the time.

I was really young when katrina hit, but I still was old enough to remember the "whole city is one neighborhood" feeling, even if I didn't realize it at the time I still can look back on it & compare it to how it is now. I was only about 3 at the time, which I know sounds ridiculous to remember how it was back then, but I'm talking about that like clockwork sitting on the front porch with my mom while she had her coffee, neighbors walking down the street & waving at you, that sort of thing. When I think about those few memories before katrina & compare it to after katrina, I do see a difference. I could understand how a visitor might not realize it, but if you live here you do. I'm not saying it's a bad place to live or anything, things are improving, & I'm happy living here, but I wish I could get that same feeling now that I'm old enough to actually acknowledge it. But we don't wanna talk about that too much.

Btw, did you guys really sneak into Six flags? I live right by six flags and I haven't had the guts to go in there myself! What was it like?

Not a photo, but a great episode from a beloved podcast of mine, the memory palace. This podcast focuses on short expose recounting history; Nate Dimeo always offers great narrative.

Episode 49: Dreamland
http://thememorypalace.us/2012/12/dreamland/

This podcast episode was focused on the famous Dreamland, which was one of the original three large parks for Coney Island (The other two being Steeplechase Park and Luna Park). This was regarded as the grandest, operating from 1904 to 1911.

Cedar Point used to have a second chair lift ride, The Frontier Lift, which ran from nearby Iron Dragon back to Frontier Town. What is now the Frontier Town Restrooms was the receiving station in Frontier Town - you can still see the queues for entrance and exit on the building.

Cedar Point's Frontier Town actually used to only be accessible by way of train or chairlift, with the Frontier Trail being added later on.

I found this fun photo, of the Frontier Lift cabins running on the main Skyride (still in operation). There is no date on the photo, but this would have to be after 1989 as Magnum can be seen. Would certainly be nice still having the Frontier Lift to get to the back of the park more quickly these days!

Another cool photo from Cedar Point, which would have been taken between 1972 and 1976. This photo was most likely taken from the Sky Ride, looking towards the present location of Gatekeeper and Wicked Twister Midway.

In this photo, you will see the Space Spiral observation tower, Jumbo Jets coaster (1972 to 1976), and facade of the Phasination indoor arcade (present day Johnny Rockets) - the first building to receive air conditioning at Cedar Point. You can also see the Matterhorn flat ride attraction, which I admittedly didn't know was ever located in this part of the park, and always believed it existed at it's current location at the end of the Main Midway, next to the north station of the Sky Ride.

This vantage point has definitely evolved over time, with the Jumbo Jet plot having served as home to four roller coasters over its lifetime.

It is a little known fact that the WildCat (1979 to 2011) opened at Cedar Point on the vacated plot of the Jumbo Jets. This was the second Wildcat for Cedar Point - an early Schwarzkopf 65m Wildcat model opened at the park in 1970, and was relocated to Valleyfair! in 1978. That same coaster still operates at Jolly Roger Amusement Park in Maryland: https://rcdb.com/12205.htm

Here is even a video of the WildCat in action from 1980. (jump to 3:30)

WildCat was later relocated in 1985 to make room for Avalanche Run, which subsequently was indoor-ed and converted to Disaster Transport. Kid Arthur's Court, a children play area and large jungle gym, and indoor Aquarium were also added along the years.

As we moved into the 2000s, a number of new attractions moved into the area:

-2000: Giant Wheel relocated to make room for MF
- 2002: Wicked Twister opens on former Aquarium/Kid Arthur's Court plot
- 2003: Chaos and Troika attractions relocated to make room for TTD
- 2005: maXair opens
- 2013: Gatekeeper opens
- 2015: Bumper Cars relocated (not pictured below)

While a less-busy part of the park, this area has had a busy past, and among the largest turnover rates of roller coasters in the park's history.

I didn't even know video footage existed of this ride!

Cliff Hanger (originally Red Devil) oeprated from 1988 to 2002 at Ghost Town Village in Maggie Valley, NC, being a rare Hopkins looper design. The ride stood SBNO from 2002 to 2008, and was briefly reopened in 2009 with new trains before closing again. It is the only Hopkins looper to not be currently operating (seven total exist). https://rcdb.com/234.htm

Ahh... the Crystal Beach Cyclone. <3

That was one of the tracks included in the original NoLimits game. Brings back many memories of riding in every seat and flying around the coaster and operating it in manual mode. I remember thinking at the time: "I bet this coaster was absurd to actually ride"!

Great selection of shots. :)

A quick flashback Cedar Point just posted for land prep that led to the construction of Wicked Twister. At this moment in 2001, the Ferris Wheel had just been bumped to this portion of the park. Soon to follow would be Troika and Chaos, which were relocated to make room for TTD in 2003. You'll also notice water with arena seating in the bottom right of the photo; this had previously been a dolphin show that began operating at the park ~1980, which later closed in 1998 after a number of dolphins unfortunately died due to illness and old age. Cedar Point continued to operate the stadium as an "Aquatics Stadium", which featured a high-dive show for a number of years. The water was drained in the mid-2000s, and half pipes were added for the BMX and skateboarding show that operates there today.

Also ran across a great off-ride and POV of Tower of Terror at Camelot Theme Park. This Schwarzkopf ran from 1989 to 2000, and now resides at Loudon Park where it has been SBNO since 2011.
