On the Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th of July I spent the weekend at the former home of the British Grand Prix (joined by Ben on the Sunday), to watch Renault’s festival style motor racing circus, the World Series.

As well as 5 different racing making up around 140 cars and drivers, there was a funfair (minus ferris wheel despite advertising suggesting otherwise), exhibitions of old cars from Renault’s past both racing and on the road, last season’s F1 car equipped with the unlimited V10 from the 2005 championship winning car (nom), larger than life Nigel Mansell “dishing up doughnuts” for the crowd and a whole host of F1/Racing simulators.

Saturday

We arrived at half eight to very little traffic (always less on the first day due to more quail events than races), and beautiful weather. Unfortunately, no sooner had we gotten on site than Mum went much too fast round Club Corner and flipped into the gravel trap, causing heavy damage to her front nose and aero!

After a trip to the medical centre upon which Mum had the doctor in stitches when she said she’d crashed at Club, we moved around to Copse and set up our shelters for our lunch and added shade.

First up was the 3.5 litre monsters, reminding me just how yummy F1 used to be before Fuhrer Max had his way with it. :( .

We were naturally supporting Carlin Motorsport (from Aldershot) and Oliver Turvey, winner of the Monaco Series Race and 4th in the standings. He qualified 5th with his Spanish team mate in 8th, pretty good result and we were happy for them.

The smaller cars with 2.0 litre engines followed, most of them doing practice starts from the pitlane, a humorous loophole in the “no practice starts on the track” rule now universal to single-seater motorsports.

After lunch the totally free (like the entrance tickets) funfair was rather entertaining, but the F1 simulators proved much more of an interest to me as the boring “single-file” Megane’s took to the race track. Next up Renault Formula 1 car, with big unlimited engine :p

Mum, greasy chav brother of mine and I went round to sit at Copse (aka – Dullest place to sit from around 12 seconds into the race EVER!). To see and film the start plus take pictures.

Turvey moved up from 5th to 3rd by the end of the race. With teammate Alguersuari getting as high as 4th before dropping back to 6th late on.

After seeing the Clio’s and their rolling antics we called it a day to beat the traffic out, and went home via McD’s; thoroughly looking forward to tomorrow.
