At least 17 children were injured yesterday when a water slide collapsed at an amusement park in the eastern Indian city of Kolkata.

Sounds very similar to the highly documented 1997 accident at WaterWorld USA in California where one girl died and 30 were hospitalised when they crammed themselves down the water slide on a senior year school trip.

I've been reading many forums and comments underneath news stories regarding the California accident. There is a definite split in opinions that the kids were to blame (they tried to beat a record for how many kids can you fit on a waterslide at once which is apparently a tradition for the school) and then those who think the water park are to blame. The park were adement that the students ignored all warning signs and the lifeguard and just threw themselves down the slide in masses.

The CNN report from 1997 tries to be unbiased by stating that the children's 'prank' ended up in a painful lesson, but goes on to say - 'just how safe are water slides?'

The India accident hasn't been hugely documented so far (it only happened yesterday), but i'm sure it won't be long until the blame game starts.
