Due to the excessive amounts of American students at uni here, the USAC program dominates the timetables and we all get a 'spring break', which is a rather pathetic week off.
Most people planned big holidays, but I can't really afford that at the moment so I recruited Batsi (a total mincer who's also from Brighton, although I didn't know him much before coming here) for a short trip. We got back today, so have the rest of the week to chill out in Turin before getting back to 'work'.
So we had 2 nights in Venice and two nights in Ljubljana (Slovenia), before coming back to Turin. Lots of time was spent on putrid regional trains (slow, skanky, but half the price <3).
When you get off the train in Venice you're right on the Grand Canal. First photo I took, of a canal coming off from it.
Grand Canal:
Waterbus stop:
And some smaller canals, which were my favourite parts of the city, because you could just wander around on your own and get lost.
A lot of the properties have back doors going out onto boats etc...
MINCE
Typical Gondola. 40 Euros EACH for an hour? No thanks...
Pretty buildings:
St Marks Square, which is the main square in Venice. They had a lot of maintinence work going on (ALWAYS happens to me...) so not as much was happening as normal, but we just wanted to go up the bell tower really, and it was a nice day for it (this was the second day):
The rest of the square from the top of the tower:
Anty people!
You can't really see any Canals from the tower, as the buildings obstruct them. However, the views over the city and coast are fab!
Close up of some Gondalazzz
It was FREEZING up the tower because of the wind, so excuse my rather flushed face.
Harbour
We them went back down to ground level, slight photo repetition but I didn't have the heart to delete them.
Parking spaces <3
Nice cafe...
...but for how long?
duh duh duhhhhhh
I'm a seagul, but, I'm an Italian seagul, so I'm rude.
We then went to get the Water bus but it was a rip off so we didn't BOTHER. It's pretty cool, looks like a metro map but it's just BOATS.
So we went to chill in the room for a bit before going back out in the evening. The bathroom was so small you could literally shower, **** and shave at the same time.
Venice is suprisingly unphotogenic at night, so I only got a few.
Gondala parking lot thing.
Spot the spooky face?
Typical canal/bridge scene
The most annoying (but interesting) things about Venice is the amount of dead ends. This path looked like a shortcut...
But put it this way, I'm glad I was paying attention when I got to the end.
I think I like Venice, although it's a very cliche place. You can't deny that it isn't pretty, and quite unique, but I probably wouldn't go back any time soon. It's one of those places you annoyingly have to go to though!
