The nominations have been announced & "The King's Speech" led the field with a dozen, including nods for best picture and director, while "True Grit" galloped close behind with 10 nominations. "The Social Network" also landed its expected best picture nomination, along with seven other nods.
Other entries in the best picture race include anticipated contenders "Black Swan," "The Fighter," "True Grit," "Inception," "The Kids Are All Right" and "Toy Story 3," the top-grossing film of 2010 and the third animated film in history to be recognised as a best picture hopeful. The trapped-hiker drama "127 Hours" and the Ozark-Mountain odyssey "Winter's Bone" rounded out the field.
There were however several highly-anticipated names which were not announced including Christopher Nolan for best director. "Inception," one of the most profitable, popular and widely dissected movies of the year, earned eight nominations, including one for best picture, but Nolan was left out.
Andrew Garfield, the provider of "Social Network's" heart and soul also failed to earn recognition from the academy for best supporting actor.
However Javier Bardem's nomination for best actor for his work in "Biutiful" (I never heard about it either) is surely one of the biggest surprises & Michelle Williams didn't necessarily seem like a sure thing as a lead actress contender, but she somehow managed to make it into the big five.

Here's the complete list for everyone to discuss & make their predictions:

I laughed when I saw that Tron had only one nomination, and wasn't in the effects category. After all the hype it was given, they havn't put it on the list. I have to agree with the academy there.

Bit sad that Andrew Garfield isn't on the shortlist. I feel a sort of loyalty to him since I'm at his old youth theatre. Plus he was very good.

I can't say much more since I don't think I actually saw many more of those films...

I meant to mention this in my introduction, but I included the Documentary (feature) category because of the Banksy film "Exit through the Gift Shop". It's a great film that anyone remotely interested in him should see. I haven't seen the others, but I hope it wins.

I'm not convinced by the Tron love... Devils advocate here.

I loved the visual effects on Tron, I really did. It was a very cool film, but... It wasn't anything more than a standard CGI film, like say Toy Story or whatever. You are in a false world designed to look like CGI.

I'm not saying the other nominations are superb (I thought Alice in Wonderland was a bit ropey FX wise to be honest), but they merge a "real" world and play with it. It's easy to to add a shiny motorbike around an actor in a shiny world interacting with other shiny things. It's very difficult to have Jonny Depp carrying around a 2 inch tall Alice and interacting realistically within that world (And HBC head???). It's an unbelievable thing happing in a believable way.

I don't know if you get what I mean? Tron is false, it's not a real "world", so adding visual effects is very easy.

I hope Inception wins best soundtrack so after they announce it there will be a loud BWOOOOOOOMMMMMMM

I've only seen one of the films nominated - Inception - and I though it was the like the Matrix; Great concept but utterly boring.

I don't care for award ceremonies. All that blubbing, back slapping and self-love? No thanks, not my style.

^ Agree.

Inception is gonna win loads and to be fair it really only deserves maybe like one or two of the things it was nominated for.

For best picture I'd actually rather see Black Swan win, but, I liked Inception more...

Actor I've not seen ANY of those films...

Actress would have to be Natalie Portman.

Supporting actress... AMY ADAMS NEEDS AN OSCAR >.< Haven't seen the film, but, I'm bored of her being snubbed cause she's amazing. Or possibly Helena. Ugh, my two favourite women going head to head is annoying.

Animated is deserved by none of them.

Directing SHOULD be Nolan, it really should, but Aronofsky should get it. The Coen Brothers do NOT need another bloody Oscar.

Cinematography should be Inception's.

Art direction, Alice.

Costume design, Alice.

Editing, Inception, though it wasn't nominated :(

Writing, Inception.

Music... Inception.

Original song SHOULD be You Haven't Seen The Last Of Me from Burlesque... You know, the song that won the Globe... but, that wasn't nominated...

And Visual Effects I don't know. Alice I guess, but, that was actually really patchy.

The others I don't really care about.

Another year where half the bloody films aren't even out over here yet...

Right I'm going to highlight the films I think will win and put the ones I want to win in italics. I've also put NS in brackets next to the films I haven't seen.

I think the fact Tron Legacy isn't nominated for Visual Effects is a joke, actually, no, it's outrageous. Furie I hear where you are coming from but the visual effects in Legacy were good enough to transport you into that world. Alice was weak in so many areas. If anything Inception should win this due to those awesome scenes with the city folding, that is rather spectacular. Oh an Hereafter getting a nom instead of Legacy is just the most stupid thing I've heard in a long time.

Well to play devils advocate again, Avatar was literally all CGI, and everyone acted like it was the greatest ****ing thing since sliced bread. It was dances with wolves meets Pocahontas in space /end rant/

A lot of the movies that win are purely CGI nowadays, but for a movie that is literally just about special effects, and the 3D made it better, it should have at least gotten a nod. It didn't deserve the bad rap it got, but hey, its not aimed at the award ceremonies, which are typically a crock of **** because they typically pick the worst movies! I can see how one doesn't like TRON, but it deserves a nod.

What will happen is that bizzare and egotistical moment when the actors clap themselves when they are called out in the nominations

Avatar was a much more complex film than Tron though in terms of visual effects. The visual effects in Tron are very simple. They're very cool, but very simple. Just because you loved the way they appealed to you (and they're very appealing, I loved Legacy) doesn't mean that they're actually that good.

This say:

Compared to this:

Although, Avatar didn't deserve a nomination for pretty much the same reason. As most of it was pure CGI, it's an easy sell. Though the mix of live action and CGI in Avatar was very well implemented.

Good video FX shouldn't be noticed. If you leave a film saying "the video effects were awesome" then it fails. If you didn't notice them (yet the film would have been utterly impossible without them, as in Deathly Hallows) then they're doing the job perfectly.

Remember, don't mix up "I liked a film because it looked cool and I liked the story better than some other film" with "good visual effects"

For me, Inception gets it because you didn't think "OMG, the street curving up is really good CGI. You thought "OMG, the street is curving up". The effects in Inception were there simply to move the story along and they slotted in subtly (as subtle as they could be LOL). It's that difference between "wow, I love the visuals" and "wow, I love the film... Just a minute, how the hell did they do that scene"?

I know a guy named Oscar...

I hope Inception wins a bunch of stuff, cause it really is awesome. Like, really awesome.

Oh Furie you seemed to have missed something spectacular in Legacy in regards to CGI. YOUNG JEFF BRIDGES!

Young Jeff Bridges is indeed excellent, but it's no better than say "Donkey" from Shrek in that environment. Benjamin Button, Avatar, they all do the same thing too... ;)
