New Show for Hong Kong Disneyland

Not massive news admittedly, but I just got this email:

One of Hong Kong Disneyland’s longest running shows, “The Golden Mickeys” Finale is a Broadway-style award ceremony hosted by Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy and Pluto. This attraction showcases classic scenes from Toy Story, Tarzan, Mulan, Lilo and Stitch, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast and other beloved Disney tales. Extravagant costumes, musical theater song-and-dance routines, real time animation, 3D effects and classic movie scenes delight audiences of all ages.

After almost 10 years performing in front of millions of children and their families, “The Golden Mickeys” is coming to an end. Hong Kong Disneyland would like to take this chance to invite Magic Access Members to watch their favorite Disney characters onstage in this live show for one very special final performance.
From now till July 2, Magic Access Members will only need to answer one simple question and share what their favorite scene is from “The Golden Mickeys” to win a chance to see the special farewell show.

It's actually an excellent show, which gets full for pretty much every performance even on quieter days, but it's remained unchanged for 10 years, so I guess it's time to retire it. I'm assuming this means that a new show will be coming to the theatre that currently houses it, though there's no mention of that yet.

Currently, it's a collection of songs/scenes from a bunch of different Disney films, some that you don't really hear around other Disney parks/shows:

- The Golden Mickeys Song
- You've Got a Friend in Me (Toy Story)
- Out There (The Hunchback of Notre Dame)
- Son of Man (Tarzan)
- I'll Make a Man Out of You (Mulan)
- Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride (Lilo & Stitch)
- Under the Sea (The Little Mermaid)
- Something There (Beauty and the Beast)
- Beauty and the Beast )Beauty and the Beast)
- When You Wish upon a Star
- Reprise of The Golden Mickeys Song

I've thought for a while that they could do with changing it up a little, putting some different songs/scenes in etc., but I didn't think that they'd retire it completely since it's still so popular. I wouldn't be surprised if something else is already being worked on and the theatre will reopen sooner rather than later. Closing on July 26th, which will be right at the start of their peak summer season seems a little strange really.

Re: Golden Mickeys at Hong Kong Disneyland to Close. New Sho

Ah that's a shame, I really wanted to see this show. Could they be replacing it with the Mickey and the magical map show from Cali?

Re: Golden Mickeys at Hong Kong Disneyland to Close. New Sho

I really hope not. The basic concept is the same - a bunch of random Disney songs tenuously linked together - but The Golden Mickeys is the superior show.

Plus, Hong Kong are more in the habit of originating new ideas rather than taking on existing ones. I think it's more likely to be something new, but you never know.

I'll text a couple of the Disney performers later and see what they know. I don't know anyone from that show specifically at the moment, but some of the parade and Lion King people might know something.

Edit - Just been told "Mickey and the Wonders Book", though I guess the title will actually be better phrased than that. So yeah, sounds like some take on the Magic Map thing.

The Golden Mickeys is fab, that makes me sad.

I'd have rather just seen them update the numbers, throw in a Frozen and Tangled section, and keep it as it is, cause it is one of the better shows.

I'm sure the new one will still revolve around a basic framework as an excuse for various musical numbers, but still.

Mickey and the Wondrous Book, opening in November:

After 10 years and 19,000 performances, Hong Kong Disneyland's most popular show is ending.

The curtain comes down on The Golden Mickeys - which has been viewed by 16 million visitors - on July 26.

But park visitors need not feel disenchanted.

It will be replaced by an exclusive stage show, Mickey and the Wondrous Book. The new show, with a cast featuring 17 different nationalities, includes several beloved stories like Mulan, Toy Story, The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast.

It follows the adventures of Mickey, Goofy and Olaf the fluffy guy from Frozen as they journey through an enchanted book.

The magic begins in November.

Good to see that it's something new and not a cut and paste job.
