New gen B&M

heyy,my home park is Efteling and my recent rides on their B&M dive coaster baron were not the smoothest is this happening to other dive coaster built around 2015 too? Then B&M Migth lose their reputation

Rides often get less smooth as they age; it’s an unfortunate fact of the hobby. Parks can try and prevent roughness from developing notably through maintenance, but it’s unavoidable to a certain extent.

As such, I wouldn’t worry about B&M losing their reputation as a result of this. It’s just natural roller coaster aging to some extent.

Baron is closing soon for a relatively lengthy period of maintenance:

I rode it last summer and it was smooth by my standards, am going next week so will be interesting to see if it has changed!

Oblivion is essentially the same ride yet almost 30 years old so for a much newer version to be deteriorating seems unlikely on the face of it. Obviously it operates a lot more being in a 365 park but then they have a higher standard of maintenance to achieve that.

Every new non-inverted B&M I've ridden, other than Pipeline and Candymonium, isn't smooth, whereas the older ones like SheiKra, Griffon, and even Medusa remain smooth. Everyone I speak with about the bumpiness agrees. I don't know what's changed, but B&M is definitely losing its reputation among enthusiasts.

It's a bummer really. They're not as intense as they were decades ago but even in the 2010s you could depend on them to make a glass smooth ride (except Banshee). I think Monster at Grona Lund might be their last smooth coaster (2021).

I started noticing the rattle on some newish rides a couple years ago (Candymonium and Fenix for me). Nowadays you can't expect the smoothness anymore. Things like Iron Menace run like trash and hearing similar things for other dives/wingriders (which are the majority models being built these days). These are expectations often associated with a C or D tier manufacture.

The GP aren't going to notice these things, but I hope parks have begun to realize this and look towards alternative manufactures.

I don't find Fenix or Candymonium particularly rough or rattly. I think Banshee has two good trains and one bad train; I don't think it's a track issue (but I guess many do get the bad train, don't ride again, and assume it is a track issue, as I did on my first visit to Kings Island before going back a few years later, getting the good train and then immediately after getting the bad train!).

Mandrill Mayhem is a bit janky, but it's slow enough that it's not too bad. Pipeline is a bit rattly, but is fine due to the standing position and vest restraints. Valravn is a bit jackhammery at points. The worst for me are Phoenix Rising and Penguin Trek which are both actually really pretty bad in places. Penguin Trek in particular has one really rough spot in the outdoor section that's surprisingly jarring for it being a relatively slow, family coaster. Kraken feels quite rough these days too, and new Hulk has always been a bit worse than old Hulk. I've not got up to Alton to try out Nemesis Reborn yet, but I'm interested in how that compares with the original.

Rapterra at Kings Dominion is shockingly bad on the back row. I thought people were exaggerating about the new B&M roughness until I rode that in June. Iron Menace wasn't much better.

Could it be that parks are haggling for lower prices and B&M are sacrificing on the quality of manufacturing?

I dread to think what the giga dive coming to SFOT will ride like if it's similar to these!

I doubt parks are really in a position to negotiate lower prices (unless they're trying to scale back on size or cut corners like that Kennywood rumor with Steel Curtain), especially for a tenured manufacture like B&M.

It must be something with the new generation of engineers and the prior knowledge just not translating well. They need to figure it out.

Yes I know but 10 years is a little short
