Now here's some lazy journalism for you!

While on vacation in Florida, a man says he lost his sight while riding a Harry Potter roller coaster after something hit him in the eye.

He was taken to the hospital where he underwent surgery.

The man from Puerto Rico says that he only had one good eye before the incident--now he's completely blind.

Universal Studios officials say they found nothing that could have caused the incident, and they believe that the ride is still safe.

The injured man has hired a lawyer.

Right, firstly, it was in Islands of Adventure park, not Harry Potter World and it happened on the Dragon Challenge (that's Dueling Dragons in old money) coaster.

Secondly it gives us a chance to post this again:

Oh yeah, thoughts and prayers to the man etc.

Oh dear. Not good. This has happened a few times to me, getting hit with something from a coaster, luckily, never in the eye.

It's worth laughing at how that bird-hitting-someone-in-the-face incident has happened TWICE at BGW. It happened on their new kiddy coaster a couple of years ago.

I'm surprised a bird has never caused injury on Stealth, that is always hitting birds...

I got a bug in the mouth when riding Anubis at Plopsaland earlier this year.... That will teach me for laughing in enjoyment on a coaster :-/

Ironically the news report I read about this said it wasn't confirmed but they believed the guy would be blind in 1 eye... The headlines blatantly make it sound as though it was caused by the coaster and that he would never see again, period. It was definitely a differently worded article to the one you posted Ian :-/

I got hit in the eye by a bug on Beast. My eyes started to water because of that, so when I got off the ride, it looked liked I had been crying.

So has he actually permantently lost his sight or is it just the media going crazy again?

How do they even get these stories? Do the 'victims' write to them?

I've had a huge bug in my MOUTH on Ultimate. And it was so hard to spit it out. Like, seriously.... I'm sure I coated the rest of the train in spit.

The closest I've come to being hit by anything on a coaster is when I rode The Big One in a hailstorm (which started after the lift hill so we had no choice) and that hurt!

I would like to add, I found the following statements probably a bit too loleriffic...

(EDIT: it also seems despite not using it in years, I haven't forgotten how to handwrite (basic) BB code)

it was probably an item for another trains or passengers belongings. I read somewhere (dont ask where I cant remember) that he reported it hit him in the loops.
Something from someone in front of him or in the other train as they approached each other probably hit him. Its really bad when stuff like this happens, also because parks are going to get really strict about belongings and what you take on the ride (if its in your pocket or not)

I was at SFGA just a couple of weeks ago and a guy in the front row after the ride was complaining he lost his phone (stupid moron shouldnt have taken it on then in the first place), and surprise surprise some teenage boy in the back of the train got off the ride with a MASSIVE gash in his face there was bloody EVERYWHERE all over his face. It was really really bad. It took the ride ops a while to clean up cos there was blood I think on the train and lap bars and over the guys friend sitting next to him. Obviously the phone went straight into the poor kids face. Same day some guy lost his keys on Nitro and was trying to reach down the gaps in the trains to find it. Moron obviously lost it his pokcets didnt even have zippers or anything they were just open.

Its so unfair though cos I reckon thats the same deal with what happened here and its not the parks fault at all and now this guy wants to sue IOA. Someone probably realised they have lost something and wont say anything cos they realise it was their item that hit this guy in the eye.

I bet anything parks will become more and more strict about what you take on.

The park did state that they searched all around the ride and ride area and couldn't find anything that could have caused this.

Of course, it could have been something coming out of a pocket that they've overlooked, but they HAVE looked. I think anyone who has lost anything on ride will tell you that it's often retrieved at the end of the day.
