Day 1 - Tripsdrill & Holiday Park
Decided earlier in the year that it was about time I got some German creds, so Frank and I booked up a little 3 day trip to hit some parks. On the agenda were Tripsdrill, Holiday Park and a park which I’d wanted to visit since I really started getting into coasters – Europa Park.

The 1st day started disgustingly early with a 7am flight to Stuttgart. We reached our destination hassle free and picked up our hire car – a Seat Leon for anyone interested, it was so smooth and smart looking. A short drive later and we were at our first destination– Tripsdrill.

The first thing that struck me was the gorgeous location of the park. It’s fairly isolated in between some sprawling green countryside and hills and the landscaping of the park itself integrates perfectly with this. We made our way in, and after some initial confusion as we couldn’t work out what pathway to take to the coasters, we finally found ourselves at Karacho.

The queue was short, so we decided to go front row. I had no idea what would happen once we went into the pitch black, so the drop and heartline roll were a surprise for me. The launch was much more powerful than I expected and the speed is maintained throughout the entire ride, it really hurtles through some of the inversions and has some strong pops of airtime. It was great. I loved the puking man at the exit as well.

Went over to Mammut after this which had about a half hour queue. The station had really awesome music every time a train left. Unfortunately the ride was not awesome and was merely average. Nothing wrong with it, it just does nothing. No airtime. Moving on.

Next we went to G'sengte Sau, the Gerst Wild Mouse type thing. The ride was alright, just a +1 really, but the building it’s housed in is really cool and so was the queue.

I wanted to go on the log flume but Frank was in a “No water rides” mood and I didn’t fancy it alone, so on we went.

We were hungry so grabbed a bit to eat, just a quick slice of pizza. Frank was getting restless as we’d done all the main stuff and wanted to get on with our drive to Holiday Park. I wanted another go on Karacho, so we joined the queue, he decided to give it a miss as it looked really long. It was only 20 minutes. Idiot. I did back row this time and maintained my opinion that it’s a great ride, it officially claims the spot as my favourite Gerstlauer.

We had a wander around and took some pictures. Last ride of the park was the family cred, which was pleasant enough.

I liked Tripsdrill, but nothing really made it a stand out park for me. I would have liked to have had a bit more time to explore, but in all honesty I’m not really sure it would have changed my opinion that much. It’s a stunning park, sure, but other than Karacho it doesn’t really offer that much more to me, but it’s a great family park and caters perfectly to that, as it should do.

The drive to Holiday Park was nice and traffic free, I think it took around an hour. We arrived around 4pm and headed straight to the parks star attraction – Expedition GeForce. I’ve heard soo many mixed things about EGF, from it’s the best thing since sliced bread to it’s the most overrated piece of crap going. It was walk on so we went straight to the back row for our first ride. Wow, that first drop is intense, I swear I was literally standing through the entire drop. The airtime throughout the ride is so aggressive and intense, it was amazing. Yea it dithers a bit in the middle, but there’s this fantastic section with what I call “sideways airtime” and then the bunny hops at the end are so good.

We ran straight round for another go, this time deciding to try it out at the front. This was a slightly longer queue, at around 20 minutes, and sods law the minute we sat down on the ride the heavens decided to open. Imagine being pricked all over your face with tiny little pins over and over again, that’s what it was like. I think I had my hands over my face for 90% of the ride, and the experience of being thrown about in your seat and not really being able to see was so odd, one of the weirdest experiences I’ve ever had on a coaster. I think the picture speaks for itself.

13419037_10155035667382178_1973148212612245235_n.jpg

Moving on to explore some more of the park – we made our way to Sky Scream which was closed because of the storm. We took shelter by the entrance and once the rain had cleared made our way inside – the queue is themed to a haunted house, it’s pretty cool, although I find the pairing really odd with the coaster, like it doesn’t quite fit. Anyway I’d never ridden anything like this, and was slightly bricking it over the hangtime. The first launch is a bit weak, but once it goes back through the station it picks up some speed like crazy, and there’s this really odd bit where you are hanging facing forwards for what feels like a few seconds. The rest of the ride wasn’t too bad actually, its over pretty quickly but its enjoyable. Definitely better than I expected.

13501708_10155048129382178_61335055316719770_n.jpg

One of about 3 pictures I took at Holiday Park, the weather was really grey and everything just looked so bland in photos.

We had a look at the selection of flat rides which Frank wanted to give a miss – tiredness was really kicking in for him and I knew he was ready to call it a day. In all fairness, the rest of the park seemed a bit sparse and there was nothing that I was really keen to go on. So last cred of the day it was, a crappy wild mouse which was merely a plus 1. We decided to have 1 more go on EGF as we made our way to the exit, this time 2nd row and this was for sure the best ride of the day. Was nice to be able to open my eyes this time as we went down the first drop. At the front I felt that approaching the bunny hills you felt a slight drag from the rest of the train, but once it all catches up you are really pushed out of your seat. Definitely a ride deserving of a place in my top 10.

We drove to our hotel, which was an Ibis Styles just outside of Karlsruhe. It was fab, so clean and modern and randomly the shower was in the actual room. We had a bite to eat and then had an early night, ready for the next day.

Apart from one amazing coaster, Holiday Park didn’t impress me. It feel’s half done, with rides just scattered randomly here and there and lots of dead space. Perhaps with Plopsa now in charge they may start to change things up, but there’s nothing about the park that would have me rushing back.

Part 2 -Europa Park coming up soon

Re: Germany - June 2016 - Part 1

Enjoyed your report. I've never ridden Mammut, but online POVs certainly make it look unremarkable so I believe you when you say it isn't. One question though, what does +1 mean? If I'm interpreting it correctly, it's a 'meh' kind of ride that you just do for the credit? Looking forward to your thoughts on Europa Park.

Re: Germany - June 2016 - Part 1

Thank you, yep that's it, its either a kiddie cred or something unremarkable that you ride just to increase your coaster count :)

Day 2 - Europa Park Part 1

We woke up nice and early and had a fab continental breakfast (which included mini donuts yay!) and were on our way to Europa. Frank was excited about driving on the Autobahn for the first time and when the sat nav told us the journey would take 1hr 30min he saw this as a challenge. Boys  . About an hour later we arrived at the Hotel Colloseo. The lobby was heaving and the wait to pick up our park tickets was burdenous, but eventually we made our way into the park.

The hotel entrance is a little bit underwhelming, just a small section in the Spanish area of the park. We decided to just make our way round the park, riding things as we came across them as opposed to having any real plan. Our first stop was Atlantica Supersplash. It doesn’t really do much, but the little hump on the drop was fun.

Next up was Wodan, the queue moved quickly and has some really impressive theming. It’s based on the Norse mythology and the indoor sections are particularly impressive with moving walls, mist and projection mapping. The coaster was fun, smooth and fast although it frustrated me that every time it went over a hill, it turned straight afterwards preventing any real airtime.

13434828_10155048130062178_5459218048501379386_n.jpg

We followed the path round through the Scandinavia area, which I found a little bit claustrophobic and crowded, and found ourselves at Euro-Mir. The queue looked long but we were on the ride within 20 minutes. The spiral lifthill is ridiculous and goes on forever! Once the ride gets going its decent enough, although it annoyed me that after the drop I was going backwards the entire time as the spinning stopped.

13501571_10155048131192178_6948239140910427352_n.jpg

Something that really pissed me off is that once we had exited the ride we got spat out into the crowds that were gathering for the parade. Due to staff members blocking some of the pathways, we were basically stuck in this small area by the ride exit which was heaving and were forced to watch it. Really annoying as I have no interest in parades where I don’t know what’s going on.

We eventually fought our way through the crowd and found ourselves in the Switzerland area and decided to go on SchWeizer Bobbahn. We got on the front row, it was the 2nd type of Bobsleigh ride after the one at BPB and was enjoyable. We were going to try Matterhorn Blitz after but it had a stupidly long wait so we carried on.

We stopped off for some food and wolfed down a hot dog before joining the queue for Silverstar. I think it said 40 minutes but the queue passed quickly due to the excellent operations. Frank admired the F1 car that was on display, the ride is sponsored by Mercedes which personally I thought was naff and a little out of place compared to the rest of the park. Anyway onto the ride, with Shambhala being my number 1 but the only B&M Hyper I’ve ridden, I was looking forward to making a comparison. I had forgotten just how vulnerable the clamshell restraints make you feel and unfortunately pussyed out on the lift hill and stapled myself a little. The ride was fantastic but the airtime felt a little lacking on my first go so we went back round for another go immediately and sat near the back. I left the restraints a bit looser this time and ride was brilliant, particularly the ejector air after the MCBR going into the drop straight after, quite aggressive for a B&M I thought.

13516479_10155048134012178_1995123838300779574_n.jpg

It's an impossible ride to photograph from the park, so here's the lifthill from the queueline.

We backtracked on ourselves a bit and went over to ride Poseidon next. The whole Greece area is absolutely stunning and brilliantly themed, including the ride itself of which the station was housed in this amazing building. The ride itself was a bit horrible, the coaster sections were really rough and unpleasant.

Afterwards Frank decided to amuse himself by paying to get people wet.

13450111_10155048131892178_8031866385121538783_n.jpg

Walked back up to Matterhorn Blitz where the queue has gone down slightly so we decided to get it out of the way. It was your pretty standard Wild Mouse type thing, although the theming was fab and I got really excited about the lift as I had no idea.

We finished the day with Eurosat. Its an indoor dark ride with another spiral lift hil, lots of flashing lights, laser things etc. similar to your X type rides, very meh.

13522037_10155048132102178_6235262564069503971_n.jpg

We went back to the hotel to grab some dinner, not before checking the room out first though. The theming in the room was really cool and our room overlooked the courtyard area, although the effect was slightly ruined by a big screen they had erected to display the football.

We had a decent meal in the buffet restaurant, choices were all Italian of course but the food was nice and there was plenty of options. We went for a little nose around some of the other hotels, before ending the day with a disgustingly strong cocktail and chilling out to some views of the park.

Second day at Europa and final thoughts on the park coming up soon.

Best finish this off then....

Day 3 - Europa Park Part 2

We started the last day early as we wanted to make the most of the ERT available to hotel guests. Only a few rides are open so we decided to go to Blue fire and queue for front row. I’ve realised that I forgot to mention Blue fire in the first days report, but we did ride it. It’s fun and smooth but I found it a bit lacking in anything special and it doesn’t really pack any punch. The front row ride was slightly better, the launch felt faster at the front but there was no real airtime. Frank on the other hand loved it and has declared it his 2nd favourite coaster (although in a few months he’ll probably forget what it even was, like he does with every other coaster). It's a good choice for the park, smooth and re-rideable, but lacks any real intensity.

13450792_10155048137897178_893235177984621167_n.jpg

As the park started opening to the regular guests we walked quickly over to Silverstar as I wanted to get a front row ride on this also. The front row queue was pretty horrible and probably doubled our wait time overall, but it was worth it. The first drop was terrifying, as you wait for the rest of the train to catch up you are just sort of hanging over the crest waiting for it to start falling, I wimped out a bit and held on to start with. The rest of the ride was amazing at the front with strong floater airtime and fantastic speed. The front row ride cemented it for a place in my top 10.

13508867_10155048133887178_2709001027677486970_n.jpg

Pegasus was up next, the queue was split into 2, one for VR and one for normal coastering. Since I haven’t experienced VR on a coaster yet I decided to give it a try. I was shocked to find out that you have to pay 2 euros for the privilege. If parks want to go ahead and install VR then fine, but I think it’s a massive cheek to ask the guests to fund it. It was good, don’t get me wrong, and I think it’s really clever how what you’re seeing on the screen is synced up so well with the coaster. But essentially it’s no different to a simulator type ride, and in my opinion the 2 should be kept separate. It’s a gimmick and once people have already experienced it, there’s no way they’ll be willing to pay for it.

My memory’s a bit foggy now as to the order we rode things, so if it sounds like we were going from one side of the park to the other, we weren’t it’s just my bad memory!

It was a really warm day so we decided to give the rapids a go. The main part of the queue is a vile cattlepen, fortunately its shaded and moves fairly quickly. We were grouped with another young couple, they seemed to bear the brunt of the wetness much to our amusement. I will say, it was probably one of the roughest rapids I’ve ever been on with some really hard bumps and knocks at points so holding on tight was pretty essential. Still good fun and a laugh.

There was a pedal monorail type ride in the Italy area which we decided to have a go on, although you didn’t actually need to peddle. There was nothing specific to look at, just views of the park and other rides. The queue was nicely themed had some cool interactive stuff for the kids.

Next we went for a wander through the Enchanted Forest area. The obvious comparison was to Efteling, which I’d been too last year. I didn’t find it quite as immersive but there’s still some cool things to look at.

He looks some pleased with himself, funny little fella!

We came along to the newest cred to the park, Arthur. It had about a 40 minute queue, so we decided to give the single rider queue a try and were on within 10. I’ll admit that I have no idea what Arthur is about, but the theming of the ride, and the whole area in fact, is seriously impressive and the station is absolutely gorgeous. The dark ride parts are fantastically done and the highlight. The coaster parts are good although I was disappointed to be riding backwards for most of the time, as it was harder to take in the amazing surroundings especially during the indoor coaster part. At the end you exit into a fab indoor area, which is full of kiddie rides and had my favourite toilets of the park (all the toilets are themed to match the areas they’re in). Photo’s don’t do it justice.

Final new cred of the trip was the powered mine train, Alpenexpress. There was the option to pay for VR, we decided not. The ride is uneventful apart from the section inside the grotto part. I spotted pathways, so afterwards headed straight into the World of Diamonds, as its officially called. It was stunning and at the exit you went through the cutest little shop.

All creds done, we had some time to kill before we had to leave and so just went for a wander. We were hungry so decided to try out the Food Loop Resturant, just for the novelty. The foods nothing special but its edible, and the prices were reasonable.

13466175_10155048137927178_7672681649881610039_n.jpg

Following these we went on the Ghost Train. I literally can’t remember anything about it apart from there was a lift thing at the start before you boarded. Can’t have been that.

It was coming up to our time to leave, so we had one more ride on both Bluefire and Silverstar and then left to make our way to the airport.

13510880_10155048138347178_5755402938399227486_n.jpg

So my final thoughts on Europa Park – I absolutely loved it, hence why its now my favourite park. I’ll give you some of the reasons why:

1. The theming of the different lands is just spot on. Nothing is left unfinished, to the quality and detail of the ride buildings, the queues, the storytelling, heck as I mentioned even the toilets are themed to their respective areas. Its touches like this that make the park feel so immersive, and yet each land flows so well from one to another so the park still feels whole.

2. Talking of feeling “whole”, what with the hotels and such a wide variation of rides the park just feels complete, like a proper resort offering everything.

3. The park is huge and caters for everyone and everything. After our first day I felt like I hadn’t even walked through half the park yet. Obviously my priority is always creds, and what with 12 to get the days were pretty full on. But I feel like there was just so much left that I didn’t get a chance to explore, leaving me itching to go back, which in my opinion is a good thing,

4. The variety of rides – 12 coasters all offering something different – hyper, Woodie, looper, water etc. As well as a big selection of family attractions.

5. Operations were brilliant. Although some of the queues were long, they never felt long and you were never standing still for more than 30 seconds. On arriving at the station you found out why – the ride ops were just on the ball, getting people on and off as quickly as possible. Staff were also friendly and helpful which is a bonus.

6. The park was clean and had a pleasant environment, which always makes for a much nicer day.

So there we have it. A successful 3 days in Germany, with 19 new creds, a few new top 10 additions and a new favourite park.

Thanks for reading :)

Thanks! It's called Volla de Vinci (something like that) so I'm assuming so. Well the queue and station are themed at least.
