For those who know stuff about musical instruments...

Basically, i'm broke, and want to sell a Violin that I found whilst p!ssed last week.

It's in good condition, but needs new strings:

This isn't an advert BTW, i'm just seeking advice about how much I might be able to get for it if I got the strings fixed (I know a couple of people that can help me out with that (if it's worth bothering with)).

I just figured that anything, even a fiver, would be better than nothing, seeing as it was free.

Thanks!

It was on the pavement with someones recycling and bins, so something tells me they don't want it :P.

People throw away the coolest things. This is why I shop at thrift stores and get good store for cheap.

Anyways, if you were to sell it, I'd sell it for $50-75 or so. It's in good condition, and with a hard case and bow. Honestly, I'd buy it from you if I wasn't broke as well.

Hmmmmm... there's probably a reason it was chucked?

I have a trumpet which I bought second hand for about £80. It's a no-name-make, practice trumpet. Sound quality is trash.

I tried to sell it when I was broke, and none of the music shops in Stafford would give me anything for it. It just isn't good enough quality (ever felt ripped off?)

The point is, you think "musical instrument, has to be worth some readies!" Sadly, it doesn't. If there's any kind of damage, then there's a chance the sound is ruined and it's worthless (though if it was originally very expensive, it may be worth repairing - but as it was chucked out, I'd guess not).

You'll probably get something for it putting an ad in a paper - it's a good time of year to sell stuff. However, I wouldn't expect a massive amount back.
Look here
(oddly the same postcode as where I'm sitting now)
That's £60 delivered for a brand new Violin in a case.

Yep, lots going for around the £40 mark. So the reason it was probably chucked was because it cost more to string it than to buy a new one.

You'll probably find someone stole it and dumped it there. If you found it then it belongs to someone most likely and things like that can be very expensive so I'd hand it in.

I'm so glad I made the effort of actually doing a bit of research and getting some prices Ollie... :P

So... Somebody either stole a £6,000 violin and put it with some rubbish "to come back later for it".

Or somebody had a 40 quid violin that they couldn't sell in the paper so chucked it away?

Well, I think we should definitely go for option one, as that looks like a fantastically ornate and beautifully crafted violin in a leather bound, sandalwood case - clearly worth an absolute fortune! :P

As a player of stringed instruments... It's probably ****. I don't mean to sound snobby or posh, but I wouldn't even bother re-stringing it. It'd be a waste.

Also where's the bridge? It kinda needs that if you want a working violin..

I think the bridge is in the box tangled up with the old strings. Looks like it might have broken off... No idea still why anyone threw it away ;)

I'm just gonna pretend I didn't spend the whole of secondary school playing the violin to not notice it didn't have a bridge.

Isn't the bridge held in place by the tension of the strings anyway? So if the strings weren't attached, neither would the bridge be.

Ah that might be the bridge in the box.. In which case keep the thing flat on it's back. Without the bridge there the soundpost probably isn't too stable.

This.

Use it as firewood when you can't afford heating. :P
