What does everyone else make of this?

IMO it looks cluttered and complicated. I'm not overly happy about people being able to see every post from years past, either.

I don't really get it to be honest. I find it a bit illogical to navigate etc.

I think the thing that frustrates me the most is when someone gets it and I can't have the option to view it normally. How many people are on their own Facebook page that often that they want it customised like that? :/

Having said that, it may just be one of those things we have to get used to, so I guess we'll see...

I, for one, am appalled that a free website which I am under no obligation to use has made changes to its layout that are mildly annoying.

I've had it for months. I see no problem with it. People who rant about changes to the layout of Facebook annoy me...

Normally I don't care about changes to facebook, but this one annoys me for the simple reason that if you're looking for something specific, you have to try to look at two columns simultaneously as you scroll down the page.

So no, I don't like it.

I don't understand the two columns.. They both appear to hold status updates and things? What's the point.. The whole cover photo thing is pretty awful, and the whole thing sits pretty terribly with the chat bar on the right. Martyn pointed out to me that you can hide chat, but those **** adverts still remain.

Quite frankly I think it's awful, they must have beta-tested it (if at all) on a bunch of blind people.

Yea everyone always complains about fb changes, they don't bother me. It just takes time to get used to. I was a bit annoyed that I had to back and block off all my older stuff so my timeline wouldn't show it. I think the cover photo thing is great, mainly because I can show some super sexy coaster ;)

The same thing happens every time. Facebook changes. People moan for a few days. Then they forget about the old one. Repeat each time it happens.

I've had the timeline since the start of October so had a bit longer to get used to it. Personally I love it. The pages look much nicer and it's easer to go back to stuff and the whole life events with photos of when you were born, birthdays, first meeting people and graduating etc is quite easy to add and use.

The cover photo is large but if you find a nice photo that goes well with your profile picture it does look nice. Also cool seeing the map showing all the places that you've checked in at and what dates/events/photos are associated with each location.

But yeah. I actually really like it. Give it a couple of weeks once people have got used to the new features and they'll forget all about the old profiles or how they looked.

I'm not keen on it. It all looks very cluttered and I prefer the old, more simple layout.

Meh, maybe in time I'll get used to it. I'm determined to try and stay with the old layout for as long as possible though.

Actually Ollie, and I mean this with the greatest disrespect ;) - BOLLOCKS!

The last change (that I was vehemently opposed to) was the "Highlighted Stories" malarky.

Lots of people complained, lots of people stopped using Facebook, Facebook changed the system to appease those people who disliked it.

Lain, Facebook is free yes. So why do they give it to us? Is it because the more active users they have, the more money they make? We don't pay directly, but we are the raw material in their production process. Without active users, Facebook doesn't make money. It is therefore vital that the changes they make please as many people as possible.

I don't have an issue with changes to layouts and things. It's true that people quickly adapt to new surroundings and get on with it (the issue with the Highlighted Stories thing wasn't cosmetic, it was an actual upheaval in the way that people used Facebook, a complete change to the system).

Anyway, the point is if enough people openly and actively dislike the changes, they do stop using Facebook (my time on Facebook since the last change is probably down about 75% because of it) and that forces them to backtrack or to make changes that appease as many people as possible.

It's one of those tricky design philosophies. If you never change and improve things, then people fall away because it's become too staid. If you make your changes too 'big' then you lose people because you've altered things too much. Most people sit in the middle, happy with how it is, and happy enough with changes. You need to address the extremes though.

They always have to remember though that it's the users who pay their wages. We may not pay, but we are still the reason they have a job every day (how many people would honestly use Facebook if it was a fiver a month?). People always have the right to complain, and they should be listened to.

I've not got the new timeline thing, so I don't know but from what I've seen it looks pretty good

Facebook changes are usually pointless and crap. However, I've had timeline now for a few months ('developers' could get hold of it early) and I love it.

It's great to be able to go back and see what I was doing each year. It makes so much more sense for archived information. I also like the new map feature where you can tag the location of all your photos - great for those of us who love to travel!

Very true, Phil. If anybody watched the Faceboook/Zuckerberg documentary that was on the BBC not so very long ago, it talked about how Facebook takes an update almost a step too far, gages the reaction of the users, and takes it down a notch. This then appeases users, but they said they bring in the bit taken out in some form or another in a future update, so everybody wins.

Interesting strategy by Facebook, and it seems to work.

But yeah, even though I have had it for months, I've hardly used many of the features it provides as I've simply not the time. I think it's a positive update.

The most downloaded app over Xmas was Facebook, google was not even in the top 20 and that's all platforms of phone.
