Disneyland Paris Spring festival 2014 - PTR

peep

CF Legend
When it was finally confirmed by Disneyland Paris that they were starting a new Spring season this year Patrick and I jumped at the chance of checking it out. A couple of months pass by and we finally arrived...

Friday 16th May

Eurostar have annoyingly moved the direct train to the resort to a later time so when we arrived we just went straight for food in the Village. We decided upon Annette's, fully aware that the food here varies from great to very meh. Unfortunately we received the very meh food. The staff were great though and it's still great to see some of them going round on roller-skates still.

We checked in to our hotel (Residhome Val d'Europe, 1 stop away on the RER), dropped our bags off and headed back over to the parks. As with most of our trips we started off by going into the Disneyland Park, mainly to check out all the new decorations. The park was fairly empty (short queues for everything, felt very surreal).

As with all the seasonal events now at Paris they've decorated the train station on Main Street to introduce you to the celebrations...

Over on Main Street USA around the band stand was a whole bunch of decorations. There was a very Mary Poppins vibe for the whole event and this area made it very clear. Some nice topiarys and the band stand was covered in decorations and penguins.

Eek, looks like the band stand could do with some well needed repairs

We started walking up Main Street when we noticed there were only a few people around Minnie Mouse, confused by the lack of people we jumped at the rare chance. I'll note that most characters had specially designed new outfits for this new season.

Disneyland Paris have started investing in a huge refurbishment into the whole of Main Street, they are literally going to strip everything down and rebuild with materials better suited for the Paris climate (meaning it should look better for a longer period of time). They've started with the Transportation building. But they're also turning the photo and video store into something new (a clothes shop if I remember). Sounds like this refurb is going to take forever so if you go and you think it looks bad that there's so much covered up, now you know.

Ha, when we looked at the time board and saw this we couldn't quite believe it...

We had a little look at the Central Plaza topiarys for the Spring festival. They look great...

We then headed over to Big Thunder Mountain, there was a fairly short wait but seeing as there were fastpasses available we grabbed them and queued up for Phantom Manor. There wasn't much of a wait...

Inside the stretch room the cast member was doing the usual spiel in English and French and then he remembered there could be some Spanish peeps inside so asked (in Spanish l'obv) if anyone spoke Spanish. A group of girls were like "Si!" and we basically just replied with "Good luck" much to everyone's amusement. He did everything in character and spent a fair amount of time creeping people out, I wish we took down his name to inform the park of his awesomeness. The ride itself was in a fairly decent state, the mirror effect at the end still isn't working though, surely it's a minor thing to fix? Considering it wasn't working last time we rode it (November) and it had just come out of a refurbishment closer we were both shocked it wasn't there. Maybe they keep forgetting to turn it on?

By the time we left the Manor it was time for our fast pass on Big Thunder.

10299952_10154181200355360_7410203701094039114_n.jpg

A lot of the effects weren't working on Big Thunder which I found a little upsetting but it was riding fine.

I think this was the point when we randomly decided to head over to the Studios for it's last hour. This turned out to be a fairly good plan as everyone was going the opposite way. It felt odd seeing all the Spider-man posters but more on that in day 2's report. We headed straight for Rock 'n' Rollercoaster which didn't have much of a queue.

I think we ended up getting seated somewhere in the middle. But wow, you could tell this had just come out of a refurb closure. The audio was LOUD, all the lights were working and it rode really well. I had an absolute blast riding it.

We then decided to head over to Crush's Coaster, mainly to check out how the new queue is coming along. We decided to join the queue anyway (about 40 minutes? - it was far below average wait time). Unless you do a side by side photo comparison you can't tell that the exterior queue has changed much apart from the mass of construction boards up around the entrance area - not helped by magic carpets just going into a massive refurbishment, adds a slight claustrophobic feeling to the beginning of the queue area.

Once inside we could see the holes in the ground where the new single rider fencing will be put into place, that was exciting to see, going to mean loads of re-rides in the future! :) The ride itself was great fun, had a fairly decent spin.

The Studios park had closed by the time we got off Crush's coaster so it was back over to Disneyland. We ended up walking around Adventureland for quite some time. We spotted the new addition by the lake...

They fit in so well <3

We grabbed some pasta at Colonel Hathi's. The food is alright but the setting of the restaurant is amazing, the details everywhere are just awesome.

We ended up riding Pirates of the Caribbean.

No queue <3

It was in fairly good condition, great to see the duelling pirates back, even if they have been moved a bit. It was then over to Discoverland via Fantasyland for some Space Mountain: Mission 2 action. There wasn't a queue which was a rather amazing shock. The sound was loud which was brilliant and it was running extremely well, we both loved our ride on it that we just ran straight back around and enjoyed it just as much. Great to get more than one ride where we could actually hear the soundtrack.

We then decided to join the queue for Star Tours. It was about a 10-15 minute wait. The cast member batching us to our rows was awesome and was being really cool with the kids. Sadly though he swapped shift by the time we were boarding, I got the feeling he would have given everyone a brilliant spiel during the loading checks. Oh well. We were sat in the front which was weird for me because I think I tend to get sat at the back. It's definitely a lot less forceful at the front, but I got a chance to admire the animatronic as I was so close to it.

10367594_10154181202280360_3897777132082805179_n.jpg

We decided to run over to Big Thunder Mountain for another ride, no queue! By the time we got off the ride was closed and Disney Dreams was about to start. This was the first time we'd seen it in person since the addition of the Lion King and Brave. The Lion King section works quite well but the Brave bit is really awkward. Would be nice to see that taken out sooner rather than later.

10367594_10154181202795360_947842400717477823_n.jpg

We were super tired by the time Dreams finished so we walked back to our hotel and crashed, ready for another long day. Still, it was an excellent start to the weekend, we both regret not making the most of the small queues but it's not like we haven't ridden everything already.

Keep an eye out for part 2 and thanks for reading :)

Saturday 17th May

Up and out of the hotel at a decent time we decided to check out McDonalds in the village for breakfast. You can get quite a large meal for the same price of just a drink and croissant in the park, not sure why we haven't done this before. I had a hot chocolate but they gave me just hot milk and this sachet, considering it was just a powder mix it tasted amazing...

10406480_10154181210635360_5389394856734663642_n.jpg

We checked out the new LEGO store in the Village. They have some amazing mosaics made out of LEGO.

So fun fair rides is now a thing they do

We decided to head over to the Studios park first. The plan was to go straight for Rock 'n' Rollercoaster before joining the pre-opening queue for the new Spider-man meet and greet. R'n'R had no queue which was nice, our train had loud audio once again, this was becoming a trend for the weekend and I loved it.

10150760_10154181212165360_5207102212188398320_n.jpg

We then joined the small queue forming for Spidey. The entire area was full of posters for the special meet and greet. It was all rather well organised but as the character spends a fair amount of time with each group a small wait actually turned into more 20-30 minutes. You'll notice a lack of photo for this part with him and that's because we weren't that happy with the outcome, especially as it cost €20. He was a great character though and he had a fairly long conversation with us (obviously all linked in with the new film ;) ).

The crowds were started to build at the Studios and we wanted to catch the new Spring themed shows in Disneyland so headed over there. The weather, as you might have been able to tell from the photos, was perfect photo-taking weather, but it was also really hot so it put us off joining a lot of the queuelines (Paris indoor queuelines in the heat are horrific (I'm looking at you Space Mountain)). Still the nice weather meant I felt compelled to take the obligatory shot of the hotel...

The show by the castle was just finishing when we entered the park so we decided to wait for the bandstand show to begin.

It's a great little show full of energy and it fits perfectly into the area, giving it a huge new lease of life. After the performance the cast walk around the area as if you've been transported back to their era which is cool and they really interact with guests. They also have several props for photo opportunities.

10367721_10154181217010360_9109335096842174978_n.jpg

It was then up to the castle stage for the other new Spring show. This one is huge. On the stage you have a live band with a couple of dancers, then you have a ridiculously massive cast singing and dancing past the stage and around the whole of Central Plaza. There's also three of the cars from the Cars 'n' Stars parade (Studios park) themed to the show. So much is going on throughout the entire show it's amazing. I wish there was maybe a bit more diversity in the music though as it is literally one (very awesome) new Spring themed song (possibly from Tokyo resort) and a bunch of songs from Mary Poppins. Although this isn't a bad thing and means everyone is tapping their feet and singing along it would be great if there were a few pieces of music from other films. Still, it's all very vibrant and happy and just a joy to watch.

It's amazing being in the area just as the show is starting too as the cast appear from all over the place (purely because there are so many of them). At one point we were at the top of Main Street and the cast just started to appear from one of the backstage gates.

We decided it was time we grabbed some lunch so we went to the Market House Deli for a sandwich. It was rammed and trying to find a seat was nearly impossible. We finally managed to find somewhere and when a desperate looking father asked if him and his kid could sit with us he was thrilled when we said yes. As it was hot we decided to grab some Ben & Jerrys ice cream next. They were doing a deal so if you purchased two scoops you got a third for free. Excellent, our annual pass discount on top made it uber cheap too, huzzah.

As we were eating our ice cream the Central plaza show was starting again so we stood and watched it from a different angle. I took another bunch of pictures because I know you guys love them so...

We decided to pop down into the Nautilus. We saw some cast members inside the main chamber which was weird, no idea why they were in there. Still, the attack from the massive creature was working...

10314665_10154181229380360_4656638954151920557_n.jpg

... It lied. It was more 30-40. Which we were ok with, but I've never seen the queue times in Paris be so off before. When we were waiting in the boiler room we could hear this noise, sounded like a cat. It was very odd and infrequent and we knew it wasn't a sound effect. Then we saw that the noise was in fact coming from a cast member who was making his way through the queueline and trying to creep everyone out by making odd noises and creepy stares. Basically he was awesome and stayed in character/crazy mode right up until he exited through a door. I loved his commitment. This is one of the reasons I love the Paris version of Tower, you still get quite a few cast members who create little roles for themselves to help add to the amazing atmosphere. Even the guy loading us into the elevator was putting on an act which was amazing because there was a group who were absolutely terrified and he just helped build up the ride. Ha, the screams coming from them was definitely the loudest I've heard. Loved it.

We decided to check out the new Ratatouille area. It's really starting to feel ready for guests, it looks amazing. I'm so excited for this ride, there's so much we don't know about the ride experience <3

Oddly enough Patrick and I decided to ride Cars Race Rally next, I love these little rides, the engineering behind them amazes me, there are mere millimetres between each car at times. Still it was nice to be able to ride this as there's usually a grotesque queue.

From my seat I could tell that Pirates had a 0 minute wait so we went straight round and enjoyed a journey through the Caribbean.

We then ventured down into Frontierland and then (stupidly) into the pin trader shop. I ended up buying a couple more Villain pins. It was really cool seeing a whole bunch of fans with their massive collections outside. The area had a nice calm and relaxed atmosphere which was nice.

We were going to join the queue for Big Thunder but it was a little too long for our liking so we continued down to Phantom Manor where there was once again no wait. It was then back over to Discoveryland for some Space Mountain times. We managed to get in two more rides before it was time to go watch Disney Dreams.

We were absolutely exhausted at the time of park closing but we were looking forward to our last day at the resort.

Once again, thanks for reading.

Darn, still no comments. Oh wells, here's the last part of the trip report....

Sunday 18th May

We started our day by checking out of our hotel, dropping our big bags off at the Disneyland concierge (free for Annual pass holders) and then grabbing some breakfast in the village. We opted to try Earl of Sandwich which is an awesome place and was weirdly the only time we went there on this trip. Now rather full we headed over to the Studios park.

As you can see, the weather was still very pleasant, a little cooler than the previous two days. However I think the heat from the previous days had really killed our motivation by this point and we took things very slowly.

After grabbing a Rock 'n' Roller fast pass we decided to catch the first screening of the day of Cinemagique because it's one of the best things on Resort. There were loads of people going to see it which felt unusual. The audience reactions to the show were brilliant, clearly a lot of first timers.

We then headed up to Rock 'n' Rollercoaster to use up our fast pass. It was still running extremely well. We ended up sitting on the final break run for quite some time which meant we got to hear loads of random Steven Tyler sound bites which was cool. After we got off we spotted a familiar face who was working and possibly the reason for our small wait.

I think we did a whole load of fannying about before grabbing some lunch (I have no idea where time goes when we're at Disney, it's like a void) at the small truck cantina thing hidden behind Tower of Terror. I'd never eaten in their before, it was quite nice inside but the staff were all over the place. I also wasn't a big fan of my chicken burger, was a little gross. Patrick seemed to enjoy his normal burger though.

We had grabbed some Tower fast passes but decided to call it a day for the Studio park (it was getting really busy by this point). So we headed over to the Disneyland parc.

Space Mountain had a fairly short wait so we decided to join the queue for that. The interior queue was fairly long which was gross because there's just like 0 ventilation in there so when it's hot it's absolutely vile and smells worse than a gym locker room. Still we got on the ride and it was yet again running absolutely perfectly.

We then headed into Fantasyland where we decided to join the queue for Small World seeing as Disney had recently celebrated 50 years of the attraction first opening at the Worlds Fair. It was in fairly good condition apart from a couple of Christmas layover costumes still about.

As it was open I then demanded that we rode Casey Jr because it's awesome.

We then decided to do another first which was queue up to meet Mickey Mouse in his new theatre meet and greet. I remember seeing the Whinnie the Pooh show in this theatre years ago so it was weird to see the transformation. It now looks amazing, the queue is slightly sloped so everyone can get a glimpse of the old cartoons (which looked like they'd been remastered). The cartoons alternated between English and French audio which was nice, they kept everyone amused and the wait went by really quickly because you're so distracted. Also the details everywhere were amazing, it fits in Fantasyland so well.

We then got to the room where you meet Mickey Mouse. The amount of details in the room is astounding.

Memories of another resort

I love this pin board

We then meandered a bit more before catching our Eurostar back to London. The train leaves so early now that you basically only get a half day at the Resort. Not a fan of these new times <///3

Anyway I hope you enjoyed reading my report, as always, comments are highly appreciated.

I have been reading it peep just did not comment yet as I was waiting for the final part.

All there really was to say it sounds like you had a great time as normal.

I wish they would do what the other Disney parks do when painting buildings a put up a fake front. Really glad they are finally doing the park up and giving the rides proper tlc rather than a quick patch up.

The tarps with the picture will (should) be added once all the scaffolding is up, for some reason they're taking their time doing it.

It's like I was only there weeks ago :P

I've still not finished my report from Disney and you expect comments ;)

You manage to waste time even worse than family_furie though - but it's like us at Alton where it doesn't matter as you've been so much :)

I thought it was great Spiderman giving so much time to people, but it was annoying you had to buy their photo :(

R'n'RC is still a bag of turd - why do people like it? :P

The Ratatouille area looks stunning in real life doesn't it? It's such a contrast to the awful Toy Story area.

We are going in two weeks, space mountain will be shut, that's such a shame lol.

Looking forward to seeing the new area, reminds me a lot of Epcot so am interested to see how much of a better job they can do now days.

Is it worth going to that restaurant in Pirates. Always wanted to eat there but was never sure it was worth the money?

We are going with two people who have never been so we are going to do everything that's open.

Won't bother with Spider man though had a picture with him for free at IoA years ago. I think it's actually out of order that they are charging for that.

So glad to hear the audio on RnR has been fixed, I was gutted when I took Conor on it in November <//3

Marc, Conor and I ate in the Blue Lagoon when we went and felt it was really good value for money, I would highly recommend it!

Yeah photos just can't do the new area justice, it looks stunning.

Blue lagoon is probably worth it purely for the atmosphere created. We did get quite a few people yell things like "bon appetit" which I found amusing more than anything.

Yeah I was over the moon when the audio was fixed. On one of the rides the audio wad perhaps a little too loud though as it sounded like the speakers were already blown and on their way out :P

There's possibly a reason behind the paid photo only for spidey but I won't say here in case I'm totally wrong.

Has anyone been to both the Blue Bayou and the Blue Lagoon?

I **** love the Blue Bayou, everything from the setting to the service and of course the food. Didn't realize this restaurant had been "cloned" in some of the other parks.

Cinemagique is gash.

It got old after 5 minutes, and I've only seen it once.

We just got back from seeing this event.

Never have I seen a Disney event with no actual Disney characters. All the dancing in the hub but just people dressing up.

We saw 4 characters in the park over three days.

Shocked how bad the spring festival is.

Rnr the speakers have blown on the trains already. Could hardly hear anything apart from cracking sounds. It's very smooth though.

That part was not happening just the dancing in the street :(

Edit.

Apparently that did take place on the stage but as we saw the street part we could not see the stage part. I was not aware of that but it does seem a bit silly that you need to see it twice for different things.

It was very colourful and high energy dancing.

So yeah it's my own fault for not knowing I had to pick which bit to see.
