LAKE BUENA VISTA --
If an opening date for the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train wasn't enough for Disney fans, Walt Disney World followed that up Friday with a slew of other big announcements for its resorts and Disney's Animal Kingdom.
Now that New Fantasyland is on the verge of completion once the Mine Train opens May 28, Disney is turning its attention to other areas being developed, starting with an addition to the oldest resort on property.
Polynesian Resort reimagined, renamed
Disney's Polynesian Resort will see its lobby and guest rooms refreshed, along with the main pool renovated in the near future. New, bungalow-styled guest suites under construction will seemingly float above the Seven Seas Lagoon, located next to the Transportation and Ticket Center.
But perhaps the biggest piece of information on the resort is that it will revert to its original name, "Disney's Polynesian Village Resort."
What to expect in Animal Kingdom's 'Avatar Land'
The biggest hint of what's to come around "the World" is at Disney's Animal Kingdom. Later this decade, a new section based upon James Cameron's "Avatar" movie — which will soon get a sequel — will open.
During a video presentation Friday, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Chairman Tom Staggs said there are three things visitors can expect to see in the yet-to-be-named area fans have dubbed "Avatar Land."
From the onset, there were several things we knew we wanted to do:
Allow our guests to take in the grandeur and scale of the awe-inspiring mountains,
experience the beauty of the bioluminescence forest,
and, of course, ride on a banshee.
We're excited to say through a new array of technology and techniques, our combined team has figured out how to do all three.
Exactly how that will be engineered is, of course, still classified. Disney won't even give a date for when "Avatar Land" will open.
Nighttime shows at Animal Kingdom
However, a new nighttime show is on the way called "River of Light." Disney first revealed plans in October to add a nighttime show at Animal Kingdom.
But first, this summer, Disney's Animal Kingdom will open a new Saturday evening show named "Harambe Nights." This new show will be based on "The Lion King," and feature celebrity narrators, a live orchestra and a choir.
Tickets for Harambe Nights will start at $119 a person. That includes free parking and a buffet dinner.
