Why is there a giant 76 on the front of Coney Island's Cyclone?

The ride opened in 1927, and that picture was taken in 2003, which is a 76 year gap. If you notice there is a tiny 'th' above the 76.

My guess it was a sign indicating the ride's 76th birthday.
