Corn, College, and Coasters- Day 2

GuyWithAStick

Captain Basic
So I'm going on a College visit July 1st to Iowa State, and decided to hit up Adventureland on the way back. So, any tips for the park? Restaurants, what to do first, etc? Any advice helps! My tickets and hotel are already booked(Adventureland Resort), so I don't need help with those. Thank you! :)

Edit: Mods, can you move this to the TR forum please? Thanks. :)

Re: Adventureland(Iowa) July 2nd

Leave Iowa as fast as you can and never go back.

Re: Adventureland(Iowa) July 2nd

^Nah, I want to have closeby creds as well as an actually decent Engineering department. ;)

Day 0- Corn. Lots of Corn.

So I'm going to be College-ing for engineering soon, so I had to check out some before applying. A lot of my neighbors are/will be going to Iowa State University, so me and family decided to check out what draws everyone(except Tom) to here. Living near Chicago means driving through 2 states full of corn and and beans. Here are the 'highlights' of day 0:

This was the view I had for 6 hours.

These gas stations were everywhere, and the name made me chuckle.

9a52a6903f57ed1c954d2cbdc0c78b02.jpg

I'll get to you tomorrow. Btw, Monster looks fantabulastic.

41f1be2819a6f5399566ea9b00421535.jpg

Finally arrived at the Fairfield Inn in Ames(really nice hotel btw) after endless fields of corn and beans.

8af0a89f669af348eafd1c46ec36d533.jpg

Even the hotel wasn't free from this Farmageddon.

After settling in, we met up with one of our neighbors who goes here, and went to a really good bar and grill(if in Ames/ISU area, go to Wallaby's for dinner. Fantastic food and atmosphere. Once dinner finished, we headed back to the hotel and slept.

Day 1- Iowa State University Tour

After packing up, we headed up to the Union for...

Yoy.

Even a college can't get rid of Iowan corn.

The sorority and fraternity houses looked gorgeous.

QUICK! Speculate! I guess an Aauatrax(it's actually a renovation for a fountain)

Was greeted by a questionable cutout of their mascot.

08dfec12cc4980b251fc03635a33cd25.jpg

K den.

We were greeted by staff, followed by an introductory PowerPoint. Basic college application stuff and other shenanigans. After the presentation they had trivia, in which I won fashionable sun glasses:

02c0ed9cc51c672c264b67218ad4dd86.jpg

Fashionable, I know.

3bed0a47e66f23eafba1d0b6aa1a04e0.jpg

The walking tour then stated at this clock tower thing. Apparently, they take song requests, so if you want to know how your favorite song sounds like on bells, you can! :D

6689dc183ad04cd6d770bc3194d0acf3.jpg

Next, we saw the College of Business. It has the largest lecture hall on campus(yay). Nothing too special.

28d97657840561f2047a169ef5378a6e.jpg

This courthouse looking building was the College of Agriculture. Being in Iowa, this was important.

8e084ea4b8ab7405caaca78d2d4543dd.jpg

Across the Centeral Campus was the office of the important people and where the financial aid is. This will be important in the future.

This was the College of Liberal Arts, which looked like a haunted house.

This was the Home Economics building, which housed all culinary, home, and dietary classes. They actually have a student run restaurant in the basement.

Next we saw the absolutely massive Library(3+ million books). Great exterior.

002a7de562aa022f7f8bf0aa8fd7cb2a.jpg

Across the way was Engineering Way, which I'll get to later.

Next, we had free lunch(which was really good. Highly recommended).

e0a1e71372ffacd6b9e4cfd84e76c39a.jpg

After lunch, we visited some dorms and the State Gym.

Example dorm.

After dorms, we saw the Gym that was nearby. They had some exercise equipment, some weights, a basketball court, a running track, a pool, a 25-person hot tub with a 10 foot TV, and a little rock wall:

Wasn't anything too exciting though.

52f03c07562b8206ccd84834447acecd.jpg

After that, we started the Engineering tour!

9e971832f7421ccf569cc73f87c57f36.jpg

Neat lights, I must say.

So we began with an hour and a half long lecture on pre-req classes, a possible schedule you'd have, some internship opportunities, etc. Important stuff, but boring as hell.

dd6288b9ad59c20eec12e240bbee1af4.jpg

Then we went to the Aerospace building.

The newer engineering buildings were gorgeous.

This was apparently the first steel water tower west of the Mississippi. Also is the tallest structure on campus. It's full of sand now.

The architecture was very modern.

This thing was a 10 foot(cubed) Virtual Reality room with screens on all 6 sides of the room. I wanted to do it, but I don't have $1000 of spare change to turn the damn thing on.

They had quite a few engines and motors on display.

Some stuff made in one of the labs.

Didn't go in, but passed the Nuclear Engineering Building...

...which was at most 2 floors. Expected this to be much larger.

4fd94edfb4a772a4a8a610f967119fc2.jpg

Outside the Comp/Electrical engineering building was a 3D art piece of a Moth(the first 'Computer Bug' was an actual moth eating the wires of a room-sized computer).

Small indoor lobby here.

Heading back to the Union, I saw Swans in the lake.

5f1cb7d7a0d1dda9ab88ed185780f194.jpg

And some geese chilling on the sidewalk.

After that, I bought a T Shirt and drove down to Altoona to stay at the Adventureland Resort(official review tomorrow).

Finally, we ended the day with Mini Golf.

The wall that will keep the Golfers out of America.

The course was alright. No windmills or coaster tracks, but it was nice. Quite classic with sand and water traps. It was a nice way to end the day.

Tomorrow: Adventureland! Note: I have still yet to go, so my reactions will be fresh.

Mods, please move to the Trip Report forum? Thanks.

Day 2- Monster Mayhem at Knock Off land

Me and family spent the night at the Adventureland Inn, which is right next to the park. Review: It's a decent hotel, it has 2 pools, an arcade, shop, Sports Bar, free shuttle to-fro the park, and has a nice lobby. However, it is quite pricey. If it was a bit bigger, the price would be reasonable. Anyway, what we all came to see:

Adventureland!

b7cb87694422bce80fc2078536bddea9.jpg

We arrived at the park around 9:45, and noticed how Disney it felt.

6393c1f186b32c94f1898c2a9a981bb7.jpg

...then I realized it had a 'knock-off' Disneyland Mainstreet.

1a405862a35c6029063208639a1289c8.jpg

Something I noticed immediately was that EVERYONE was running like Usaim Bolt to a thing behind the trees...

MONSTER

5dc99a9b2bd91f2f4032288bd127af5a.jpg

I must say, the trains look a LOT better in person.

5b6fceb283b9bbf7419b128bd0e59595.jpg

The lift towers over all but one ride in the area. Quite intimidating to locals.

6e0fb3d82799b4cf425f493df0b412ad.jpg

The train is waiting for me! :)

d50483b84d78ba47ec52d76f14ba59bb.jpg

My official review of Monster: This thing is fantastic. It is butter smooth, it whips you over the drop, the hangtime is bonkers, it flows together amazingly, and the stengel dive. Oh god the stengel dive. It is the ONLY time where a trim makes the ride better. It's taken so slow, and gives the best hangtime ever. It's not too fast, not too intense, not much airtime, but is just fun. Probably not going to crack my top 10, but God damn is this good. A beautiful fit into a park this size. Also, this turns magical at night. More on that later. ;)

8/10

50b1ee86433090fd561397d13a970a54.jpg

After getting a few laps on Monster, we rode the classic woodie Tornado.

033d2f547fcf4ce4084e3bcaac3b5b3c.jpg

It really wasn't anything special. It was fairly smooth, had a bit of air, and was in a nice location. Good for families. 6.5/10

063f55648a6b43878f415aa63a6addab.jpg

Next, I rode Storm Chaser, the brand new RMC Iron Hor...

fca3b6bf35218ae905a04a636923c567.jpg

Oh...

It was pretty neat. Quite windy up there, which was both scary and fun. I still think I like Funtime's version more.

This food stand here was quite fab.

Some nice rides. :D

Monster is fab. <3

Next up was the indoor CCI 'coaster', The Underground.

350b8d3dd1b0ee363cb8193ae16272d5.jpg

Dear god, this makes Gobbler Getaway look good in terms of queue line animatronics. It sounded like a typewrighter. Expectations dropped.

...and it was alright. The animatronics were meh, had some useless water effects, and didn't really have a story. Not much of a coaster either. 4/10

1a6d4069b0a99bc9a7e30f76cd36cf97.jpg

Walked around a bit. I noticed how close the train runs to the path. Didn't ride tho.

4799abdb96891173820a1a33980ecd54.jpg

Had pizza for lunch. The pic is of the Sub Sandwich place(obviously). I took it because it continued with the Knock off theme. It had the colors and everything!

d18ac6585652c79526dfa69f575daec4.jpg

Fed the carps a bit. It was a good time killer.

83329fcd92712fb82b848b4994303cc0.jpg

Next, we rode the Hopkins looper, Dragon.

f2720a3358b0b523b498345ae2c28ed9.jpg

DEAR GOD HELP. This piece of crap was terrible! Way too rough, far too short, and didn't have a good layout. 3/10

634056b94f25d712cbcbff5ded476251.jpg

At least it's photogenic.

4af4ed113abbed71474488c9b06b036b.jpg

Played some games as well(which are all classic btw), and won a Knock Off Nemo and Dory and a grey penguin. Neato.

a5c0874cdf84cfc81508d2ac215f3265.jpg

After that, we headed into Outlaw Gulch to ride the GCCI, Outlaw(as well as some other rides nearby). It was built by CCI, but was also designed by Mike Boodley, the man who went on to form GCI. You can definitely see both the CCI and the GCI in there. Very fast paced, some nice pops of airtime, and was quite intense. It's currently both my second favorite CCI(behind Raven) and GCI(behind Thunderhead). 7/10

8786a75585fabd4bb66a0bdd9ddc3ca3.jpg

Decided to head back to bae.

Yaaas pleeaase.

Goon shot for all those lift motor enthusiasts.

The magic dispensers. ;)

60b4f3dbd154c0ec5957167aaa3dfd4e.jpg

Next up was Space Shot, the namesake ride.

It was a nice ride. Better than Holiday World's, but not quite to Dr Doom levels.

f32e02898d2f4931596196c392c0dede.jpg

After that, I went on a flat ride spree, beginning with this mini Top Spin thing. After this, I have no children. Way too long of a cycle, too rough, and the gap between the restraint and your body is so great, it surprises me nobody has gone sterile. Absolutely atrocious.

994744710a8c385a37110ec95229060d.jpg

Went on the really cool tea cups next. It was 2 different spinning plates where the cups swapped constantly. Very fun.

693ad3ab4ad3a28856134eb76c046045.jpg

Then went on this thing. Never been on one, so I was quite excited. Unfortunately, it was massively disappointing. Again, too rough and lengthy. Not planning on riding one again.

b4fbd13f91497076c28ef466baa4142f.jpg

The train looked neat.

c06acea3a5d94a408a18a7e1a69ba5e6.jpg

Almost rode Tornado again before something arose. I noticed that the 10 foot footers have returned.

47c670b12ac418e8fe8ffd6f139f72fb.jpg

Rode the Chair Lift/ride. These beauties were on the station.

Ooh, what's this? ;)

181788ff1105d8a9e1e4d18d6bf83626.jpg

After lapping Monster, I rode G Force, the Huss Breakdance and their Falling Star. Both very fun and intense. The falling star was especially fun as it "dropped" instead of just going down. The breakdance slowed down ever so slightly then sped up again. Very fun flats.

6b0b265598c5522d94aba68aa0c16d67.jpg

Now is when the magic begins.

673a960d68d168f3ddbb4f605eae4a2e.jpg

Here you can slightly see the lights.

70a3e724ed2bebc4915d1a1968141f8e.jpg

Something really cool they do is that the lights follow the train along the track, starting as red, then fading blue.

6aeb054dfaddaab6a11304a407337467.jpg

Then THIS happens after the train finished the course. Pure bliss.

*Sexual noise*

45d241d4c4ca7e75f45cb69b2837fa72.jpg

The lift hill has a flashing red light as well.

d6385bd7ceca667f5d13c7ac8ced255a.jpg

This shot gets better as it gets darker.

70c666dda4638292f958e89f9f287d28.jpg

The lights change constantly.

66b16ff3b01c51740ef35fc5147d2c46.jpg

Got on the second to last train of the night with some really high energy teens. Because of the way the grouping worked, the group of 4 was split into 3 and 1, the 1 being named Will. Because we thought we were the last train of the night, we all 'rode for Will'. It was a very fun way to end the night.

bb3d744efb27ee59bced5dc4804d81f4.jpg

As I said, the lights follow the train.

I had a fab day here. Shoutout to Jonny, the fellow enthusiast I met up with today who helped me marathon Monster If you're in the Des Moines area, go here.

I'm glad to hear you had a nice time at the park and enjoyed Monster. How many laps did you get in the end? How were their operations?

I love (LOVE) the lighting package on Monster. I need that in my life. <3

Thanks! Monster really is a good for this park. If you're going to Kansas City, it's not terribly far.

Yes, I love the lights as well. This ride set the light package standards for coasters. I ended up getting 17 laps on Monster, 6 of which were the magical night rides. The operations are odd. Most coasters aside from Monster have only 1 train, but they pump out people in 30 seconds. Fast dispatches, but only 1 train ops(monster had 3). They also have a very strange loose article policy(aside from monster, which had baskets)- you must bring everything on or leave it with a non rider except for Adventureland merchandise. Very strange.

omg American Universities are so big and modern. The lighting is utterly brilliant! It seems so random at a park like this. And that chairlift <3

I loved Iowa State when I visited a few years ago, albeit it was for a track meet and not for a visit or anything like that. And Monster makes me excited. What a great looking ride. Now I need to go.
