Copenhagen & Coasters - July 2016

peep

CF Legend
So Patrick and I decided to book a random trip to Copenhagen to nab the creds and see some of the sights. We stayed at Gatwick airport on the Friday night and then very early on Saturday 2nd July we boarded our Easyjet flight. It was due to depart at 7am but the back staircase left a scratch which led to an investigation to make sure it was safe to fly which delayed our departure by nearly an hour. URGH.

When our flight finally arrived in Copenhagen it was wet and miserable and we decided to change our day's plan a little. Originally we were going to travel over to BonBon land before doing Tivoli Gardens in the evening. We were too tired to really bother with the awkward travel options and instead decided to grab some lunch in the city, check into the hotel and spend the rest of the day in Tivoli. Safe to say we made the right decision here. We managed to find a bit of tourist trap restaurant that was actually awesome. Our waitress was fab and the food was great.

Our hotel looked classy in the foyer but was actually a little dated and small in the actual room. The beds were super comfortable though and it was like a 1 minute walk to the harbour. (Called the Pheonix Copenhagen for those interested).

Loads of big areas of the city are covered in green boards while they build a new metro line. One of them had a really fab wheel for things to do...

Our first impressions of Copenhagen were that it's really nice and we couldn't wait to explore it a bit more on our second day. There were creds to ride though so we headed into Tivoli Gardens. I've wanted to visit here for years because it just looked nice and everyone says good things about the place. One of the many entrances was rather fab.

The crane was building a giant new shopping area thing on the corner of the park which will apparently open late next year. A shame it's not more rides tbh.

One thing that was clear from the off was there were plenty of stages and places to eat and drink. I adored that there was a giant ship with a restaurant on it...

I spot a cred!

Our first ride of the day was the small kiddy coaster. We had to actually wait some time for this as it went around for ages.

Next to it was the infamous plane ride which I was always like "yeah, I'll totally do that when I go". Seeing it in action made me think otherwise, it looked horrid!

I should point out that I thought the theming in this area was really nice. Our next ride was the new for 2016 tower ride, Fata Morgana. We opted for the "thrill" seats thinking they looked tame. They packed that weird yanking feeling you get on waltzers and other spinny rides, was really odd.

There's some neat loose items boxes next to each seat

Our next ride was Daemonen. There was a fair wait for this as it only had one train ops. We managed to get back row and I really liked it. It was unusual to start with some banked turns before the main drop. The loop felt quite rough which was unusual for a B&M and there was still a lot of speed as it hit the final brake run, a shame they didn't have more room to fit some little hills in or something. Still I thought it was a fun coaster.

The next ride was the Hans Christian Andersen themed dark ride (called The Flying Trunk). This thing went on for ages despite each story only lasting one or two scenes. Surreal seeing the other bits of track above or below you at times. We really liked it though, it also looked quite fresh so I take it there was a recent refurb (actually, everything in the park seemed like it was in great condition).

We grabbed a quick drink which came in these great plastic cups. You can recycle them via some machines and you get some money back.

Cred!

Odin Express actually had quite a wait. It was an ok ride, there was an awful vibration on part of the helix though.

There was a little area themed to some astronomer which was fab.

It contained a sweet shop which was pretty cool.

Next up was the Galley Ships. A fab little ride which was nicely decorated. I liked the little soundtrack it had as it went around.

We then walked up this fab street alongside the woodie. We popped into the fun house that's hidden along here too.

We then headed round to the "roller coaster". It's got amazing theming, just a shame there's no way of getting good photos of it. There was also quite a queue for this but it was running 3 or 4 trains so it was just always moving. We thought it was great, really fun and very smooth. We were certainly coming back for more rides later.

We then just went for a bit of a wander having ridden the main rides. It really is a beautiful park. We also managed to catch a little kids show, it was a bit random.

There's even an aquarium but we didn't go inside. It did have this fab sculpture outside though.

We rode the old car ride. It wasn't very exciting.

We then went round to the starflyer which had a bit of a queue due to their lame operating procedure. They were making sure that no one had anything in their pockets and that included zipped ones! It was ridiculous and I imagine it's because some fool dropped their phone or something at one point. Still the views were nice.

I got some water and it randomly came in a cardboard carton. I was very confused at first. We actually grabbed some food, we both got a pulled pork sandwhich in the China area, it was alright.

We decided to go on the flying trunk dark ride again because why not.

When we came off it was raining quite heavily. Boo. So we just found some shelter for a while and waited for it to calm down. We then discovered the water based interactive dark ride hiding underneath the woodie. It was very random. Most of the ride was just trying to figure out how to get the system to work.

The rain had pretty much stopped now so we went for more goes on the woodie which now had no queue! We did it three times, once in the back row when we got the crazy brake man. Wow he pretty much didn't brake and we got ALL of the airtime. It was absolutely insane and just amazing.

We then went back over to Daemonen which I still enjoyed but it just has nothing on the woodie.

Burdenous

Such a weird layout

We then took another big walk around the park to kill some time before the night entertainment began. We think this was the first time either of us had seen a giraffe on a carousel...

We were amused by the devil eyes on the cars on the mini dodgems under Fata Morgana...

Crazy lighting

Oh so we came across this crazy bird and fish chaos, the birds were literally trampling the fish, it was crazy.

This bird was also really angry at some duck, it was clearly very angry at it...

The big band played for like 90 minutes and they were great. Loads of old people were dancing along at the front too which highly amused me, it just generated a lovely atmosphere in the park. Oh and they played Nirvana's 'Smells like Teen spirit' which I thought was amazing. Here's a version by Richard Cheese (who's amazing and you need to check out more of his covers), it's a little bit more up tempo than how they played it but you get the idea...

It was then back over to the little lake for a fountain show. All the lights coming on was just making the park even more wonderful.

The show was a little random. I loved all the lighting and lasers oh and the fire! Totally didn't expect to see anything like this in the park. Afterwards we rode the little mine dark ride again before one last go on the woodie. We got the epic brake man again who this time was showing off so was standing up and facing backwards the whole time. Yay for lots of insane airtime!

This is the amazing dude!

We then got to end our time in the park with a cool firework display which was so in sync with the music that it put massive smiles on our faces.

It was then a long walk back to the hotel after an absolutely exhausting day. So amazing though, wow, Tivoli was just fantastic. Why can't London have something fab like this?

Sunday 3rd July

Our plan for this day was to do a free walking tour of the city and then in the afternoon head over to Bakken. Within the initial talk our guide talked to the group about Tivoli and Bakken which was great. Our guide's name was Esben and he was awesome. The tour lasted about 3 hours with a small 20 min cafe break in the middle. Unfortunately the weather was mixed during our tour but was mainly ok. As we didn't really have time to go and properly explore any of the places he told us about I think a return trip to the city is on the cards. Here's a random selection of photos...

We then got on the train to Bakken. As we got off the train it started to rain quite heavily, oh joy. It had calmed a little bit by the time we'd walked through the forest where the park is located. We grabbed our wristband and got straight on the Mine Train Ulven.

As soon as the train left the station it started to heavily rain again which made the ride... interesting. The surprise launch out of the station also took us a bit by surprise and our backs hit the hard seat in an unpleasant way. Ouch. The ride was actually quite fab though, quite smooth twisty track. The rain wasn't really letting up so we opted to go grab some food next to where the terrifying clown was eating fire.

The viking restaurant had great steaks and wasn't a bad price at all, very tasty. As we were exiting the clown was out again doing weird things.

With the sun now out we ran around mopping up the creds. We started with the woodie, Rutschebanen. It was horrid and unpleasant. Next!

Tornado was next and I wasn't looking forward to it after what others had said. It wasn't that bad but the launch into the corner... why?

Wilde Mouse was next. Pretty standard. Approved of the random enclosed lift hill with smoke.

Next was Racing which was actually very fun.

Ahhh, creepy ghost train cars...

I'll admit we initially struggled to find the last coaster in the park, Mariehonen. Tiny little ladybird coaster tucked into a corner.

It was a mere +1 really. It did stop after about 4 circuits on the lift hill. The operator said something and then it struggled to relaunch us off the lift hill for another couple of laps. It was weird and was clearly not great for the lift hill motors (considering I've seen these coasters fail with less adults on them I really don't think they were built to handle this).

We then grabbed some epic ice cream before grabbing one last ride on the mine train coaster. As soon as the train dispatched the rain absolutely chucked it down. Again. I don't think the weather wanted us to enjoy this coaster lol.

And that was that. We got back on a train and headed to the airport. Our flight home was then delayed by about 20-30 minutes which was slightly frustrating.

Oh well, it was a great little weekend away. Bakken wasn't that great, reminds me of Knoebels - a fun fair in a forest. Tivoli was fab though and I loved the city so I'm totally going back at some point (and to grab the BonBon creds).

Thanks for reading!

Thanks for a great report, peep!

I'm glad to see you enjoyed Tivoli, such a unique and charming little park. Definitely one of my favorite European parks for sure. It is definitely worth waiting for the evening/night because the atmosphere is so magical around then. Would you say your favourite ride of the trip was Rutschebanen at Tivoli then?

Thanks!

Yes, easily the best ride of the weekend. I agree that it's just a bit magical at night, though that could be said for a lot of parks once the sun sets.

It was really nice reading this as a lot of the photos showed areas of Tivoli gardens that I hadn't seen before. The theming there looks impeccable yet charming. So easy to see how it inspired Disneyland.
