Coaster Designs/Concepts/Prototypes That Never Made It.

So I've been rummaging around my old website fright time (I still have all the files on my pc) and found tons of stuff I'd forgotten about including a few prototypes and patents from ages ago that never made it. The older among you may remember these but I suspect they be new to the more recent goon converts.

at IAAPA in 2000 Giovanola brought along a model for a tilt coaster which also rotated 90degrees. Having ridden Gravity Max I can only imagine how terrifying this would be.

Around about the same time Setpoint released the idea of a splitting racing coaster, although it was never built it later turned up in RCT3. The patent for this is still online here (with loads more images) http://www.google.co.uk/patents/US6269750

And again about the same time the small Japanese company Hoei Sangyo released the Sledgehammer design. This was slightly before the 4D coasters but had some similar aspects. From what i can gather the cars were like a zac spin and could rotate freely although were mounted on top of the track like a traditional coaster.

They even built a prototype of the first drop at their factory The proposed layouts insane.

They still advertise it here. http://www.hoei-sangyo.co.jp/roller_coa ... ter08.html although there are some images below which are no longer on their site.

I've got a few more to run through at a later date when I've sorted out the GB's of files I still have from this era.

Would be cool if anyone else has any old concepts that they think should have been built. Vekoma must have hundreds over the years :p

I liked GCI's switch track idea. Wish that could've been built. I also liked S&S's design for the rotating vehicles kinda like X2 but instead of forward and back the cars wobbled like side to side and the seats were winged. Thought it looked cool.

These are pretty cool, that splitting coaster doesn't seem wow, the track splits, that it? I can just see goons struggling for the cred(s) (if it's worth two) by riding and re-riding hoping it'll go the other way ;)

I think part of the idea was

A) 1 track for a racing coaster saves money (Although u lose the being able to see the other car)
B) running them at each other slightly offset after they split would give an awesome near miss Dueling dragons style. If you think about it you could do some awesome effects with this.

B&M never made a second launch coaster either. Probably wasn't popular.

I don't know much about it, and I could be completely wrong, but wasn't there some weird prototype coaster planned for Alton Towers until the idea was scrapped and Nemesis was built instead? I think I read/heard something like that somewhere...

^ Technically they never made a launch coaster in the first place. Universal's own creative team was behind development of the Incredible Hulk tire launch, with B&M not having a real hand in development.

The full iteration of the Robocoaster still has yet to grace the world with its presence, but its spirit has manifest by way of flat rides and Universal's Harry Potter ride.

And let's not forget the Cantilevered Coaster.

That rolling seat/sledgehammer design looks terrifying.

What about GCI's Boomerang concept?

Yep, Arrow Pipeline, but it was rubbish so they decided not to build it. It would be interesting if they would, but I can only imagine the queue exceeding 4 hours for it...

PS: I also think that Premier Rides still offer Pipeline coaster on their website...

This ride was designed for that Florida Thrill park which got cancelled. Its currently meant to go to the brilliantly named "Great Mall Of China" in Beijing but the parks been delayed. It's not led a charmed life.

Believe it or not, the Arrow Suspended Coaster model was conceived to also feature inversions. Here is a video of the early concept of the Suspended coaster. You can also see how Arrow originally believed they would not need banking on the Suspended coaster, as it would swing into the turns like a pendulum. As we later learned with Bat, this caused too much stress on the track, and required Arrow to bank turns on later models.

Couple more i dug up

The Stengel Tower Coaster was something proposed in 2000 which also made its way into RCT 3. Trains would race up one side of the tower. Lock on and the tower would rotate allowing the train to drop into another track in reverse. The patent still exists here. http://www.google.co.uk/patents/US6755749

Seems a bit complex to actually work.

This ones a bit more random and it shows the original layout for Colossos at Heide Park. Note the different turn around and the extra helix at the end.

Is it just me, or does that look a little bit rude?
