In work's canteen, when they make you a sandwich to order, they always ask "Do you want butter?" Now, to me, that's a stupid question and should go without saying. If it was me, I'd assume that everyone wanted butter unless stated otherwise.

So, is it more common than I think to not have butter on your bread in a sandwich?

Please note, for the purposes of this, I'm using 'butter' to also include any type of spread that may be used instead (Margarine, sunflower spread etc)

Is this some crazy British thing I'm not aware of? I have never heard of a buttered sandwich in the U.S. The odd thing is that it sounds good with some cooked ham, I'll get back to this after I get my sample.

Always have butter (prefer the spreadables, but for the sake of this poll I'll call it butter).

:D

Nope, I don't. I'm not keen on the taste of butter so I don't have it.

It took me about ten years to convince my mum that I didn't like butter, it was a real struggle as she's a firm "four pigs a day and as much lard as your arteries can take makes a man" kind of woman. The idea of not smothering bread in fat was abhorrent to her.

I actually like melted butter in baked potatoes, on toast, etc. It's just not when it's still semi-firm on bread, crackers, etc. Though I did go through a phase of not having buttered toast either (and I still don't if I'm adding anything to the toast, like bacon, sausages, beans, etc.)

Obviously as time as gone on, I'm not as fussy and will eat buttered sandwiches now, but until I was in my late teens, I just wouldn't. Actually, I would refuse to eat a buttered jam (jelly for the yanks) sandwich - it's rank, utterly vile.

Maxi-Minor_Furie also doesn't have buttered bread, though we always buttered it for him as he was growing up and he ate it. Like me, he's just developed a dislike for it over time.

So if asked I don't have. If not asked, I will generally avoid sandwiches - especially if there's spaghetti bolognese on offer ;)

Everyone in the office thought I was some sort of mental when I told them I liked peanut butter sandwiches to be buttered before adding the peanut butter.

It's amazing.

In the USA we don't put butter on our sandwiches except for banana sandwiches, although when I was a kid I even had a few friends that used mayo on them instead. Most Americans use mayo and/or mustard as spreads for their sandwiches.
In Germany, however, butter is also used for sandwiches & I prefer butter to mayo on any sandwich that uses a bread other than the usual sliced white bread (which is standard here in the USA).

Hahah, the work canteen offer the same, must be a council thing ;)

I never had butter in my sarnies unless it's something dry (like ham, bacon, etc) but if it's something sloppy like with mayo, coronation chicken, salad cream etc, then I don't bother. I suppose being a tubby bastard who enjoys a smoke and a drink, I've got to make a small effort here and there for the good of my health.

Butter is literally the best thing ever. I lather it on everything. So yes, yes I do.

So excited for my massive coronary at 40 <3

I know of the butter sammich ordeal cause moms side of the family is from Illinois, and they were just odd ones

Personally, Ive never knowingly tried it (Ive been to Europe before while in High School, and god only knows what all I ate at this point. I just remember Fanta.....lots of Fanta), but it sounds interesting.

This.

Except that I'd use "have" instead of "had" so that it made more sense.

Yeah, but if it's something like a bacon butty with ketchup then no. Butter and ketchup is gross <///3.

Considering the only sandwich I eat consists of bread, cucumbers, cheese, and salt/vinegar chips, I put a lot of butter on it to make it less dry. On like, Subway and stuff though I don't have butter.

Americans generally don't use butter on sandwiches like a condiment, but it's not uncommon, especially at restaurants, for the bread to be grilled or toasted with butter. So for any American that says "I've never had butter on my sandwich," you probably have, and you probably enjoyed it!

That said, I never use butter in the sandwiches I make for myself at home. Usually mustard if anything, and sometimes mayo, but I've recently gotten into the habit of using no condiments at all, as it allows me to taste the individual ingredients of the sandwich so much better.

I'm not a massive fan of sauces, I find them really overpowering and ruin my food =[ Stupid mustard on everything in Paris <//3
