Birthday Trip 2013: Europe's Greatest Hits

nadroJ

CF Legend
So what started as 2 days in a theme park and 2 days doing cultural stuff ended with me getting my own way, which naturally meant 4 days in theme parks (it was MY birthday trip after all). The schedule looked something like this:

Wednesday: 6.45am flight to Eindhoven; hire car; drive to Efteling; have some MAGIC; drive to Hotel Matamba.

Thursday: Phantasilandawesomeness; Hard Rock Cafe
Friday: Morephantasialandawesomeness; drive back to Eindhoven
Saturday: Morning/early afternoon at Toverland; fly home about 5pm.

Wednesday

We arose at some UNGODLY hour Wednesday morning. I adjusted quite quickly whereas Conor stumbled about like some kind of rabid bear for the next three hours (clearly I'm much more used to this than he is ;]). Daddy was kind enough to give us a lift so we got dropped off at Stansted, faffed with some crap breakfast in the airport and had the world's quickest/faff free flight to Eindhoven. Eindhoven is tiny and you enter a Saw-the-ride-eque queue thing when getting off of the plane. And all of the staff ride around on bikes, very European it is. Timing was shaping up quite nicely, at 9am we were presented with the Fiat Panda (of actual WIN, surprisingly), and held our breath as I entered the Efteling co-ordinates. SUCCESS! The satnav was very co-operative (thankfully meaning we didn't have to resort to MAPS of all things) and sashayed to the wondrous place that is Efteling.

We pulled into the gates at 9.55am (told you our timing was impeccable), minced in the Panda right up to the fabulous entrance and excitedly bought tickets and got maps and generally squealed with delight. We were so excited that Conor forgot his wallet. Burden, now I have to pay for everything all day. Anyway, we nabbed an English map and walked into the park. It looked GORGEOUS, especially on the crisp yet sunny and clear day that only the month of October could provide. We grabbed hot chocolate and a sausage roll from the cafe at the exit of Panda-of-doom (which we avoided because it's BUMHOLES) and joined the miniscule queue for Spookslot. It was awesome yet weird, I wondered what Conor would make of it, turns out he liked it and I think this was a good attraction to give him a taste of what weirdness European parks can deliver.

After this we bumbled over to BOB. I love coasters with generic men's names. There should definitely be a cred called Dave. The park was pretty much empty still, the queue for BOB was only about 5 minutes, and we spited the smelly school group (I swear they were just constantly farting the whole time) because we were a group of 'twee' (that's Dutch for two). Yay. It was OK. More fun than I remember but not fun enough to re-ride, even with a ten minute queue. After this we just kind of wandered around going 'It's so PRETTY' but I think next we did Fata Morgana.

This was another ride I wondered what Conor would make of it. He really enjoyed it, and was in awe of how all the effects were working, and kept excitedly pointing things out to me like the child he is. And lolled at the terrorists and booga booga man at the end. It's all very fab in a special kind of Efteling way. And the entrance plaza is HUGE and detailed and I love it <3

After this we walked around the corned and gawped in awe at the Flying Dutchman entrance. So cool! I still love it, I love how Efteling doesn't really have specific areas it's just all a massive blend of amazingness. 10 minute queue for Dutchman, it was a bit burdenous inside but we were on before long. I love the European style of batching where they let you choose what row you want to sit in, there doesn't seem to be much demand for front row so more often than not that's where we found ourselves. Flying Dutchman is gorgeous! I love how the boats are set into the water instead of on top of it like other water rides. The theming is so immersive and the use of light and fog effects is so simple yet effective. Still feels like the coaster part is a tad unneccesary but at least it makes the ride longer. AND it's a water ride that doesn't get you wet, the best kind <3

I think around the point I'd decided I needed the toilet so we went to the cafe in the train station, had a wee break and grabbed a sausage in bread style of thing and chilled for a bit. Park was still empty, weather still lush. Python was next. I can't for the life of me remember if it had the fab new restraints last time I rode it, but they make SUCH a difference. It was actually ENJOYABLE. I totally prepared myself for vile headbanging but it was smooth and lovely and if there hadn't been awesome GCI to be had I'd have re-ridden. Loved the 80s videos of moustachioed, perm-headed persons riding it too, so gross and European <3

The time had come for GCI. The queue was annoying though because Efteling had decided on one train operations. Who do they think they are, Thorpe? Eurgh. So we stood teasingly in the station for 20 minutes waiting for the bloody thing. I think we did red first, in the back. Of course, it was brilliant fun. Lovely little pops of airtime all over, unrelenting speed and the thrill of the racing aspect, plus DRAGON (there is an unwritten rule that you must shout DRAGON every time you see the DRAGON). Annoyingly we decided the queue was too annoying for re-rides, but we would revisit later, as there was still much of Efteling to explore.

On our way through to Vogel Rok and those bits, we picked up an innocent bag of popcorn. But oh my god, it was the BestPopcornEVER <3<3 Is there anything this place can't do right? Oh yh, rubbish train operations, but anyway, the popcorn was LUSH. We decided to do the weird awkwardly racist clown dark-ride first. They've stolen the Wallace and Gromit theme tune but changed a few notes for copyright reasons, it's annoying. If you haven't been on this ride, YouTube a video of it. It's brilliantly dated (and European) so it's full of vulgar stereotypes. We guffawed and took photos of the racism and felt all dignified and on high horses for being so MODERN and ACCEPTING of other cultures, and sashayed onto Vogel Rok. Once again, no queue, and three trains running, yay! Last time I rode there was no soundtrack (boo), but this time I rode there was soundtrack (woo). It was funny because Conor ducked when the snake eats you at the end. Fab ride, great example of how a bit of theming, some cheap laser effects and a cool soundtrack can really make a difference in a cred.

On our way out Conor took some stupid videos of himself with the Vogel Rok. I think at this point we had another toilet break and prepared to get lost in the fairytale forest, which is actually the best thing is the world. Especially if you're a fairytale goon like me. Anyway, I love that Efteling have managed to portray the fairytales without resorting to casual copyright infringement, it really is a feat in itself. The place is just utterly gorgeous. If you don't know, basically it's a forest where every so often you stumble across a little diorama of a particular fairy tale. Some are just animatronics, some are full on shows, some are old, some are new. The older ones have a quaintness about them, like the animatronics and effects aren't great but they're not gross at the same time? The newer things are really beautiful, the use of staging effects is lovely. The new thing for 2013 was the Emperor's New Clothes, a show about 8 minutes long using animatronics, water effects, shadow effects and soundtrack. It's quite humourous and cute, I really enjoyed it. Conor loved the mental water lillies show, seen here:

We watched it twice.

I think overall we spent about an hour and a half getting lost in the forest. There's loads of different directions you can go in which is great, you really could spend the whole day in there if you really wanted to. And it's pretty. Oh, and Efteling have decided to dye some doves so every now and then you get a flock of mutli-coloured birds flying overhead.

We then fancied a sit down so went inside to the gorgeous old indoor carousel. Beautifully detailed thing, and really quite fast and violent too. Hidden in this building also is the OMFGAWESOME train diorama. It's basically a huge **** train set set in a Bavarian-style mountain scene. It also has working boats, horse and cart and a fun fair. And there's a whole separate scene in the dark where a storm is happening. It's ridiculous and fab.

1380322_10151926753404855_1319198376_n.jpg

After this I decided to go and stand outside Drumvlucht and cry because it's not open at the moment =[[ It's OK, because it's being made MORE AMAZING, because in the word's of John Cooper 'apparently that's possible' XD Decided against Rahjavelin because it's a bit rubbish and went on Villa Volta instead. I still have no idea what the ride is themed to, something about thieves and goats? It's pretty anyway (as is everything at Efteling) and Conor enjoyed getting another Mad House cred. After this I wanted to go on the kiddies monorail thing in the character area, but there was a queue and ain't nobody got time for that, so we sacked it off and went to re-ride stuff.

On the way over we went on the slow_boats. They were slow. There were some vulgar seagulls who AMBUSHED any boat that had food. Like they literally had some sort of military operation wherein they would swarm the boat and hijack any food on board. It was avarian chaos it was. But it was OK because we didn't have any food. There was also a seagull stuck on the turntable, walking but getting nowhere. Funny but cruel. Conor was in AWE over the flying island, but I didn't want to go on it because they're DULL. More creds, I cried! So we had more Flying Dutchman. It was still awesome. We bought an ORP, see:

733872_10151924635724855_1386147907_n.jpg

The woman told us for €20 we could have had 15 photos. 15! It was too late in the day to take advantage of this ridiculous offer though, spite <//3 We spent the last minutes of the day re-riding Joris. 2 more on blue, one more on red. Such a firey little coaster! I want one as a pet. We got another ORP, see:

1374333_10151924635634855_426570088_n.jpg

We asked the ORP lady where the best place to watch Aquanura was. She said 'by the river, that is round' (everyone in Efteling speaks in riddles you see). We asked if the show was any good. She said 'hnnghemrmmm'. Our expectations for the event were lowered by around 40%. We decided a good place to watch from would be right by the entrance, that way we wouldn't have to battle through burdenous families to get out. We go some deep fried batter covered in sugar, they were delicious and indulgent. Aquanura started, it was good, but I really wish we could have seen it at night. The YouTube videos show that the colour in the water makes it about 85% less boring, which was a shame really. At least the soundtrack was good.

After the show we bought some tat, got in the Panda of JOY and minced over to Hotel Matamba at Phantasialand.

Fab trip report Jordan! but just one question about your coat, did you kill it? or was it dead when you found it? :D

I missed Eiftelling when I went to Holland but I kind of wish I hadn't now, it's comes across as similar to Toverland (which is fab) but on a much bigger scale, seems like it could be a struggle though to fit everything into one day.

Looking forward to your Phantasialand report, actually can't wait until next year!

Wow you were very lucky to go on an empty day. Jealous.

Can't believe you missed out on seeing the new version of RAHjavlin. It has some cool new effects which I'm in actual awe of. Shame that you saw Aquanura during the day, it really should only be on when it's dark as it really is amazing at night. Version 2 is also on the way <3

Can't believe you didn't go in the EPIC PARDOES PANCAKE PALACE THING <3 <3 <3 <3 It's a magical place that everyone should eat in on every visit.

^The thing is, I'd much rather whore a fab coaster than watch even the most amazing of shows, so priorities ;]

And we didn't eat a proper meal in the park, only grabbed snacks here and there as we weren't properly hungry.

That pancake house was EPIC when I went last month! <3 And Raveleijn was truly spectacular too! Can't believe you missed it but sometimes whoring coasters is a priority haha! :P

So wanna go back to Efteling. Sounds like you had a fabulous time Jordan. :)

To be fair, I've seen rahjavelin before and I found it dull and Conor doesn't really like shows so we didn't miss anything really.

Wish id known about the pancakes though <//3

We pulled up at Hotel Matamba, and well I'd by lying if I didn't say I was a tad underwhelmed. It looked cool from the outside yes, but being sat by the roadside just doesn't give the magical feel of other resort hotels I've stayed at, where the drive up to the doors is nicely immersed in park atmosphere. Anyway, those worries were soon trashed as we walked through the doors to be met with the smell of coconuts and animal noises (this was 9.30pm by the way). We checked in, got all our tickets and fastpasses and whatever else was coming to us and dumped the bags in our room. Have some hotel photos:

The rooms were nicely cosy, not a ton of room but then again it's not needed is it? The beds were a camping style with mozzie net curtain and we had a lovely view of Black Mamba from our window, meaning we had a B&M roar alarm clock <3 We were starving and had intended to get some McDonald's or equivalent on the way but sort of forgot, so had to have hotel buffet instead. Very expensive, €30 per person PLUS drinks <//3 It was OK, they had a grill chef cooking all kinds of meat (Conor had kangaroo and buffalo) and a massive selection of other crap, but I'm a fussy eater to suffice to say the €30 was not well spent. I would not advise eating here. Anyway, we were shattered so it was off to bed and up bright and early for Phantasialand awesomeness <3

We had hotel breakfast buffet which, in contradiction to last nights offerings, was simply amazing. Massive selection of hot and cold food, teas, juices, pancakes, fresh omelettes, etc, etc. And it's included in your hotel stay. Brilliant. I met a thing:

960157_10151922950434855_1532319544_n.jpg

Anyway, we stuffed ourselves and headed to the park gates, which were a 100m walk from the hotel entrance. There IS some sort of back entrance through Black Mamba's loop, but it was never open =[[ Can anybody elaborate upon why? We got to the entrance, YAY! We forgot one of our tickets, BOO! Lots of faffing happened but finally we were in, had a gander around. The park was pretty busy, no idea why for a random Thursday in October, we guessed we'd managed to arrive on some kind of German holiday because the next day everybody was checking out of the hotel and the park was dead. Maus au Chocolate had an hour queue already, but I guessed this was because it was right at the entrance, so we headed to Wuze Town for some Winjas!

I adore the entrance to Wuze Town. There's so much happening all around you and you can't quite take it in. The thing I love most about it though is that it clearly did not cost a fortune to create, a lot of the theming is coloured sheets of material and things like that, it's very creative and very well executed. I think at this point the queue was 15 minutes and we decided to do the one on the right of the station as you approach from the queue (no idea what is what, but this is the one with the horseshoe element). *SPOILERS* I loved watching Conor's face as we went up in the lift and then proceed to watch him go from laughing his head off to what the hell as the ride went on. Winjas are both hilarious fun from start to finish and it is a shame Maurer Sohne won't do anything like it again.

1380513_10151922950629855_649087627_n.jpg

I think we decided to come back later for the other Winjas cred, and Conor wanted to go on the Tittle Tattle Tree (the spinny uppy downy thing in the middle of Wuze Town) so we queued five minutes for that. It was dull. After this I wanted to do the Hollywood Boat Tour because I didn't go on it last time and I've heard it's fab. It's AMAZING. The sets are HUGE and mental, like there's a giant King Kong in one scene. It's getting a bit old and musty now, I'd love to see them invest some TLC into it, I loved it <3 Temple of the Spitehawk was next, we queued for front row, because why not. It's LONG. And DULL. It needs music like Vogel Rok otherwise it's just the most tedious BORING thing ever. We didn't re-ride the entire trip, even when it was walk on. The fab look water shooty boaty things were down, booo =[ Instead we decided it was time to make our way over to Mystery Castle and River Quest. On the way we found a random hidden dark ride called Silbermine. It's themed to like, the old Mexican West. It's fairly long and had some impressively detailed scenes. And Conor found a fellow beard brother, so everyone was happy.

Mystery Castle only had a 20 minute queue, yay! Conor was a bit nervous of this one, he'd been glancing glumly over at the tower the entire day. But I assured him it was amazing. One of the stupid scare actors got me in the queue line too, boo! I think we waited about 10 minutes in total. I absolutely adore this ride, and that's saying something as a hater of drop towers. Everything about it is brilliant, the theming, the soundtrack and the ride itself. The blackness of the inside really adds to the pure horror of the ride, when you're down you can't see up and when you're up you can't see down, it feels like you're falling/shooting up forever. And the fact that I can't speak German adds some menace to the angry shouty German man too. We both loved it and I think we re-rode about 7 times on our entire visit.

1384294_10151926756569855_577488266_n.jpg

The time had come for River Quest and ideally I'd wanted to get a poncho because this rapids is a beast if it chooses to soak you. There's even a sign that I didn't take a picture of saying 'this is water Russian Roulette' and it really really is. Conor leant me his hoody so I didn't get wet. Instead, he was the one who got the soaking. Again, like Winjas, I loved seeing his face as the boat entered the lift-shaft, and laughed even harder when the doors slid open to reveal the drop. It was this one that got him soaked, and we spent the rest of the ride crying with laughter as wave after wave got everyone in the boat, except me * smug *. I think it is my favourite rapids ride purely because you have no idea what is about to happen if you haven't ridden before, I don't know why more rapids don't use this cascading design, it really is superior to just meandering around a crap river.

I love crap dark rides (can you tell) so we went on the Chinese Ghost train next. Such a weird ride, and such an obvious Disney rip-off haha! I love the pirate ship scene and there are some genuinely unnerving scenes, especially the giant who stares into your soul at the end. Scary. Colorado Adventure next, and I have to admit I had forgotten how fab this mine train actually is. Conor and I took a POV of ourselves riding the first time, and I almost lost the iPad a couple of times, the airtime is INSANE for a ride with that style of lapbar XD We got a good view of Chiapas from here too, yeah, it's very dead for the moment.

https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=10151939438379855&notif_t=video_processed

After this it was FINALLY time for Black Mamba. The sign said the queue was 45 minutes, so we just dealt with it and joined the back. Turned out to be 20, yay for fast batching! There were goons behind us in the queue, they had walkie talkies and go pro cameras and hiking boots. I forgot how fab the queue is with the coaster track wrapped around you, love it <3 We decided upon back row first, and it was lush. Fab floaty airtime coming out of the zero-g and plenty of force. Conor pointed out that it loses its touch for the last section and just kind of meanders around, but I like this as it gives you a sense of speed and force, I know some people criticise this though.

Post Mamba we were peckish so went to the little burger place disguised as a Mexican food place. It was actually delicious, some of the best theme park burger and chips I've ever eaten. And then we went to the fab fruit place and got strawberries with chocolate sauce, omnomnom. I love when parks sell 'healthy' stuff as well as deep fried crap, makes me feel less bad about what I'm eating. It was at this point I believe we walked past Talocan to which Conor shouted 'What is THAT?' We joined the queue of course, and ended up in the backwards facing row. I love how the ride is SUCH a spectator friendly thing, everybody just stares and takes pictures, it's like a show in itself! I hadn't ridden Talocan before and was excited to do a topspin backwards, but was upset by the lack of fire/water from this angle. The ride is insane. It just makes you feel like a complete ragdoll and is forceful without being sickening, just the rght balance, loved it!

Upon exiting we saw another thing, see:

I know somewhere between all this we used our fast pass for Maus, but I forget when so I'll review it now. We did the queue at some point too. The level of detail is phenomenal, it really feels like a real factory but every now and then there's something mad which reminds you its not! The ride uses the Toy Story Mania system, but this time you had a piping bag full of chocolate and you shoot mice. It's hilarious fun, a bit tired on the arms if you're not used to using them in this manner (AKA, if you're not a boy ;]) but yeah, absolutely fantastic. The 3D is amazing and the way they immerse the screens into the theming is wonderful. A couple of rides the guns weren't as reactive as others but other than that no complaints about this one whatsoever, a really great take on the shooty dark ride.

There were some more re-rides that day on Colorado Adventure, Mystery Castle and Winjas, but the park was really quite busy so we didn't get as many in as we'd have liked to. The day ended with the fab Drakarium show which has acrobats and such and at the end all of the park's dragon mascots come out for photos. Fab way to end the day.

That night we drove into Cologne (which was empty) for my birthday dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe (also empty).

Completely OT but you bear an uncanny resemblance to the girl who lives in the condo behind me.

Phantasialand just looks like a fun park.

Urgh, so need to get to Phantaisaland (sp?) and Efteling.

Jordan, that coat you're wearing at Efteling is fab.

Go Ian it's so cheap, stay in the resort hotel too! For two people it was £200 per person for flights, 2 nights in resort hotel, 1 night in a normal hotel and park tickets. SUPACHEAP!

Still can't believe I've not been to Phantasialand. I will be setting this to rights next year, it looks epic!

EFTEWIN! <3

PS. Conor is right, Indian Waterlillies is clearly the best thing in the world ever. Burt Kampfert <3

TALOCAN <33333333333

When I went they were playing the music from Narnia, Witch & the Wardrobe in the queue for some reason. Forwards is best.. So much fire <33
